Phini Village – 12 Exciting Things To Do In Phini, Cyprus

Welcome to beautiful Phini – a village in the province of Limassol, on the beautiful island of Cyprus!

In this article, I am giving you not one, not two, but 12 unique and exciting things to do In Phini, whilst exploring the village and agrotourism scene in Cyprus.

A little bit about Phini Village

Phini is built at an average altitude of 920 meters, between steep slopes and high, mountain-green mountain peaks.

For instance, the altitude means you can escape the scorching Cyprus heat, with cooler temperatures all year, and additionally, little to no humidity!

The beauty of Phini with its picturesque houses and taverns is completed by the waterfall Chandara and the impressive Trooditissa monastery located in the north of the village.

Additionally, I recommend trying the local Loukoumi and of course, taking part in a pottery workshop – an art for which the village of Phini is famous.

Furthermore, the difficult but interesting nature trail of Phini-Trooditissa is worth it for hiking and cycling lovers alike!

In addition, a visit to the village but also to the neighboring villages of Prodromos and Lemythou will bring you closer to nature, tradition, and the simple and unpretentious way of life.

So let’s dive right, into the 12 most exciting things to do in Phini!

1. Eat homemade Loukoumia at Ourania Delights

Loukoumi, otherwise known as ”Turkish Delight” is a family of confections based on a gel of starch and sugar chopped into bite-sized cubes and topped with icing sugar.

At Ouranias Delights, you can enjoy fresh loukoumi that is made traditionally every day!

For instance, Loukoumi in Cyprus can be found in a huge array of flavors, but here, you can choose between bergamot or rose, with almonds or without.

Trust me, you will thank me for proposing the ones that are fresh and authentic and not made in a factory!

2. Walk around Phini village

After a bite ( or ten) or loukoumi, it’s time to walk around the village and soak up the culture!

Here you can walk down the old streets, admire the traditional stone-built homes, and see the locals taking care of their courtyards and gardens ( all immaculate).

Be prepared to be invited inside for coffee and sweets – the people at Phini are extremely hospitable!

Whilst walking, you will see the bell tower of the Timios Stavros church, which has stood in the village for approximately 155 years, and definitely deserves a visit!

After that, If you love museums then the small but unique Pilavakeio Museum of Traditional Art (+357 25 421508), is located in the village center.

The museum is displaying traditional farming instruments and vases and photographs of the Cypriot life from many years ago.

At the Pastra traditional coffee shop (+357 99 066783), you will find most of the locals enjoying their Cypriot coffee and interacting with each other.

Try frape (iced coffee) or a good strong Cyprus coffee ( like espresso, Turkish or Arabic coffee)

3. Take part in a Pottery making workshop

The village of Phini developed an extensive tradition in pottery, the history of which goes back into the centuries.

The pots manufactured until today in this village are red, porous, and similar to those of Kornos.

In the past, this craft was a profitable occupation for a large number of inhabitants that supported entire families.

Nowadays, pottery is mostly a women’s profession, but back then, the men were mainly jar makers, and the women manufactured objects for the house and for carrying water.

During the weekends, you can take part in a pottery workshop – by the wonderful Giota Aristidou.

With her guidance and infectious energy, you can learn to create clay masterpieces too!

Giota is determined to preserve pottery art in Phini, and in conclusion, she is not doing this for profit per se. She only charges 4 euros per workshop, which lasts up to 2 hours – an absolute bargain!

Alternatively, you can visit her shop simply to admire her art or buy some of her creations – priced equally cheaply in my opinion!

4. Eat steak or meze at PHINI TAVERN AND RESTAURANT

If you have followed any of my travels, you know I am a steak fanatic. So I was very pleasantly surprised to find a restaurant in Phini, that specializes in…steak!

So yes, definitely do eat at Phini Tavern, if you fancy juicy, perfectly cooked steak in a beautiful courtyard surrounded by forest and green!

5. Explore the beautiful Chantara Waterfalls

An absolute highlight in Phini is undoubtedly the Chantara waterfall, found on the river Dhiarizos, just north of the village.

The waterfall emerges through a wild landscape filled with all sorts of trees – like plane trees, ivy, pine trees, golden oaks, sage, and lavender, giving guests wonderful scents.

Chantara is an 8meters high waterfall. The sounds of the water falling into the small lake below, along with the birds singing are truly magical.

There are little benches you can relax on, and a small nature trail so you can witness the waterfall from the top.

What I love even more is the fact that access to this is SO easy. Simply drive a few meters down a dirt road, park and you are there!

No hiking or walking is necessary, therefore perfect for people with disabilities too.

6. Find Peace and Serenity at Trooditissa Monastery

Located on the southern slopes of the Troodos mountain range, you will find the 13th-century picturesque Trooditissa Monastery

The small but beautiful church of the monastery was built in 1731. Inside, you will find a priceless silver-leaf-covered icon of the Virgin Mary.

It is said, that the icon helps childless families produce heirs.

The church, as well as the monastic buildings, can be dated back to the 18th-20th century!

This is a male monastery, where everyone peacefully coexists on the grounds and contributes with chores – like fruit picking, gardening, and cleaning.

Rules of Conduct

Trooditissa monastery is open to visitors only. Please dress modestly when visiting, although I would suggest that call ahead before you visit.

Practice being quiet and respectful, and avoid taking any pictures or videos with any monks in your shot!

7. Hike or bike the Phini-Trooditissa Nature Trail

Are you ready for a challenge?

The linear nature trail of Phini- Trooditissa, is a 4.5km hike through the forest, that takes approximately 2hours to hike!

It crosses the Trooditissa River, Chantara Waterfall, and Phini Village. Nature lovers will spot many bird species as well as golden oak and strawberry trees and Calabrian pine!

8. Take a road trip to the neighboring villages

Phini, like so many Cyprus villages, is connected to many other villages that are super easy to access by car!

Prodromos is only a 13km drive, Lemithou village is 14 km away, and the beautiful village of Platres ( there are so many amazing things to do in Platres) is a mere 4km drive!

Prodromos Village

Prodromos is a village that became a popular tourist resort thanks to the creation of the Berengaria hotel, as well as various mountain excursions.

The village boasts a wonderful climate and impressive natural beauty, as it is surrounded by lush greenery and the wonderful, fresh scent of pines.

Lemithou Village

Lemithou village is one of the highest in Cyprus at an altitude of 1200 meters in the heart of Troodos.

The sleepy village only has a mere 25 permanent residents! It is located in a unique natural landscape with magnificent evergreen forests and exclusive deep valleys.

This is the village I chose to stay in for 2 nights. I needed some peace and quiet after 2 full days of fab road trips and exploring! ( Keep reading for more on my accommodation)

The village’s main attractions are the 16th-century church of Ayios Theodoros and the church of Panayia Iamatiki which houses the 17th-century icon of the Virgin Mary.

Activities in Lemithou

Lemithou is great for hiking and cycling enthusiasts as there are numerous nature trails and paths to explore. As for the ski fanatics, in the winter the Troodos ski centre is located only 8 km away from Themis House.
As far as religious tourism goes, you are also in luck! The famous Byzantine Monasteries of Kykkos, Trooditissa and Trikoukkia, are located very close to the area.
Wine lovers will also love exploring the wine villages of Cyprus, through an endless wine route, near Themis House. You can visit the wineries, take tours and taste the local wines and other local varieties from the unique vineyards.

9. Check out the haunted Verengaria Hotel – Prodromos Village

Built in 1931 Berengaria was a legendary hotel that was a haven for Royals and Presidents from all around the world.

It used to have a built-in casino, and nightclub, that attracted a beautiful and eclectic crowd! The gatherings, parties, and meetings at Berengaria were legendary!

This majestic hotel is now a shadow of its former self, and many urban legends say that the hotel is haunted.

Currently, the hotel has been sold for a reported 2million Euros and access to it is impossible.

Bear in mind, that it is barely standing! There have always been warning signs not to enter it for your own safety but people took the risk just to walk its grounds.

Now, It is impossible to access it, as it has alarm systems inside.

We were able to fly our drone on top of it and use the camera to take a look at it!

Locals in Prodromos village say that the hotel will be rebuilt from new to look just like the original, and I will be the first to book a room – especially in the ”haunted rooms”!

10. Fuel up with a Cypriot Buffet at The Byzantio Restaurant

Byzantio restaurant is a great place for lunch if you are in Prodromos village! Close to practically everything I mention in this article, and located right in the middle of the square too.

At Byzantio, you can find a spot for coffee, sweets, and a gorgeous Cypriot buffet too for lunch!

The buffet is extensive and filled with traditional Cypriot dishes you won’t find in all tavernas on the island!

In this family business of over 20 years, you can enjoy both an indoor and outdoor space for seating. In the winter, a big plate of hot homemade soup in front of the open fireplace is pure heaven!

11. Discover the Prodromos Reservoir and its picnic/camping site

This is a fantastic spot for picnics and camping with a gorgeous view!

You can combine a relaxing stroll in nature or even a hike in the 2 nearby trails. Meanwhile, the views of the Prodromos Dam that contains 122.000 cubic meters of water are super soothing!

The whole area is nestled in a pine forest, providing fantastic views and shade. The picnic site alone, with its kiosks and wooden benches, can host up to 250 guests.

This area is also great for children as it has a fenced playground that they can safely play in.

The facilities of the picnic site are accessible for people with disabilities.

12. Experience true Cypriot Hospitality and comfort at Themis House Lemithou

Themis House is a restored beautiful stone-built guest house. It is hidden in the lush natural landscape of Troodos in the beautiful village of Lemithou.

There are 10 studios for rent in this 2-floor complex, that can be rented individually or all together for larger gatherings and parties!

The Rooms

Each room is fully equipped for comfort, with free wifi, central heating, and TV. Of course, there’s a kitchen too, although you will hardly need to use it when you taste the deliciousness of the kitchen downstairs!

Two of the rooms feature their own jacuzzi! all of the rooms open to their own private terrace with panoramic views of the Troodos mountains.

The view is truly magical! The prices are insane, you can literally rent a room for two, with a jacuzzi for 60 euros a night!

6 of the rooms are on the top floor that is completed by an outdoor pool. The other 4 are situated downstairs next to the large stone-built courtyard, with views of the entire village.

In the summer, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the courtyard. This is a space that people love to use as it is surrounded by shade and perfect for relaxation.

In the winter, the indoor communal space with the fireplace is perfect for cozy nights with wine and board games.

The courtyard is fully equipped with everything one needs for a classic Cyprus barbeque. The amazing thing is, guests have full access to the facilities to cook their own barbeque on the premises!

The Food

The breakfast is priced at an extra 5 euros per person – that is worth every mouthwatering bite.

Eggs, cereals, cold meats, and cheeses! Then, jams, freshly baked bread, olives, and so much more! All this is served daily, and it’s all the fuel you need for a full day of exploring!

There is no set menu during lunch and dinner, but Mrs. Giannoula – the tireless host and owner never let us go hungry!

First, you are presented with a couple of food options. Then, off she goes to cook up a storm in her kitchen and create magic!

We ended up eating dinner there both nights and it was fantastic each time.

The hospitality is immaculate from everyone involved, but especially from Mrs, Giannoula, which is simply outstanding!

It comes as no surprise that Themis House, is constantly booked, and guests keep returning time and time again. 10/10 definitely recommend it!

Cyprus By Car – Amazing Road Trip To Akamas, Paphos

Cyprus by car, is the absolute best way to experience incredible Cyprus. From the cities, paradisiacal beaches, picturesque villages, and everything in between.

And when you are talking about exploring Paphos Cyprus by car… well it gets a whole lot better!

Authors Note: Save The Planet

Akamas is an environmentally sensitive area, which should have been protected a long time ago – back when Cyprus entered the EU in 2004. As I have mentioned in numerous articles, irresponsible tourism often leads to the destruction of nature’s wonders, and Akamas is a part of this too. You can read more about it here.

When visiting such areas of immense beauty and wild nature, it is important to proceed with caution. Firstly, make sure your trip is eco-friendly.

Keep all rubbish in your backpack or car and dispose of them safely.
If you are a smoker, Carry a portable ashtray – the Cyprus heat often leads to fires and many of them are caused by cigarette buds!
Drive safely, to avoid destroying precious flora and fauna
Hike, walk, or use bicycles wherever possible
Do not Litter the oceans – carry a stainless steel water bottle to also keep your water cold.
Refrain from disrupting the wildlife. If you witness turtle hatching, please do not queue up for a photo opportunity – that is simply cruel!

Because this is not just any road trip!! Wild, unspoiled nature, and incomparable beauty. This is Akamas, this is Paphos and THIS is our Cyprus, which we must, by all means, protect, for ourselves, but also for the next generations!

In Paphos, we take on Cyprus by car seriously and travel many kilometers! Particularly, Pomos, Poli Chrysochous, Akamas, Neo Chorio, Arodes, Lysos, and Ayii Anargyroi!

Unspoiled, jaw-dropping beaches, views that take your breath away, wild nature safari, warm smiling people, and wonderful hotels and cottages!

No matter how many days you vacation in Paphos, it is never, ever enough! And that is why I bring you my personal favorite places to explore Cyprus by car right here!

Can you travel to Cyprus by car?

It is best to fly into Cyprus before embarking on your Cyprus road trip. However, if you are adamant about bringing a car, you could take a ferry from Greece or the Uk into Cyprus. Bear in mind that this will take 1-2 weeks in transit and cost you a few hundred euros in customs too!

Cyprus By Car – Is it easy to drive around Cyprus?

Yes it is! Because Cyprus used to be under British occupation, all roads and highways have English signs and are in great condition to drive on too. The only narrow streets you will find are in the villages (that are totally worth a visit by the way!).

The distanced arent too large – you can drive from one end of the island to the other in less than 4 hours – but there are literally thousands to do in between!

The only place I would recommend to ditch the bag and get a quad of a baggy is in some parts of the Akamas Peninsula. Keep reading for more info on that!

Are cars cheap in Cyprus?

To be perfectly honest – nop. If your goal is to explore Cyprus by car, then I would suggest renting an SUV. That way, you can safely visit forests, cities, and villages too.

An SUV during the summer months (high season) will set you back 50 euros per day without petrol. So that quickly adds up! Hence why I almost always recommend a road trip between 4 people as that puts the cost down a lot.

Also, please bear in mind that the public transportation system in Cyprus is practically non existent.

There are a few buses here and there – and special shuttles to the airports in Larnaca and Paphos etcetera. For info, you can read about it right here. So for a successful road trip, peace of mind, and comfort I would highly recommend renting a car!

Do you drive on the left in Cyprus?

Yes, in Cyprus we drive on the same side of the road as the UK. You can legally drive here with a full and valid UK driving license.

To rent a car in Cyprus, you must be at least 21 years old and you must have held your license for three years. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge.

Cyprus By Car – Pomos

First up on your Cyprus By car itinerary should be Pomos! This village, lies about 20 km afar from Polis Chrysochous, on the way to Akamas peninsula.

It is a laid back, peaceful village and one of the remaining unspoiled and undisturbed areas of Paphos.

But this little gem boasts amazing coastline views and beautiful sandy beaches. The result? Well, an epic start of a road trip!

Dragon’s Cave – Pomos

First up is Dragon’s cave – a rocky area with a beautiful beach, just a few kilometers from the little port of Pomos.

According to tradition, it is told a dragon lived in the cave and protected the area from evil! There are a few steps that will take you down to the cave. You will love taking pictures of the intricate cave, rock carvings, and rocky beach!

Pomos Harbour

This small picturesque fishing harbor is great for a little stroll! Although I havent personally tried it, I was told that the food at the restaurant there is very good!

Cyprus by car – Akamas Safari

The Akamas National Park lies on the west coast of Cyprus, and it is without a doubt like nothing you have seen before! Untouched by humans and development (at least for now) its immense raw natural beauty will be left with you forever!

The peninsula is as vast as it is beautiful! It covers 230 square km of forest, valleys, gorges, beautiful coastlines, and sandy beaches.

The wildlife, as well as the flora and fauna, are abundant in Akamas. There are varieties of rare tulips, trees, birds, butterflies, and reptiles as far as your eye can see!

Akamas is also home to many incredible nature trails – so hikers will definitely plan to say a few days exploring it all!

Apart from hiking the nature trails, you want to explore the coastlines, gorges, valleys and viewpoints. For that, you either need to book an Akamas Safari!

Petrides Rentals – Akamas Safari

Petrides Rentals was a game changer! I honestly had the BEST 5 hours – and visited some places I wouldn’t have known to stop for if it wasn’t for their help!

We rented a 4 seat baggy, and It felt as sturdy and safe as a car! There are quads too if you prefer those, and maps giving you clear ideas of the numerous routes you can choose to explore Akamas!

We opted to have a guide with us – and it was the best decision ever!

For starters, it freed me of driving! As a result I could take more photos and videos and simply be in the moment and enjoy it! Secondly, Argyris is a walking Wikipedia of Akamas.

Born and raised in Akamas, the man knows every rock, road, and secret pathway to the best spots!

Moreover, he will happily tell you all about everything you are seeing! Argyri, you are incredible, and I thank you kindly!

Simply park your car at Petrides Rentals ( in Poli Chrysochous), rent a buggy or quad, and pick it up on your return!

Ready, set, GO and get ready for an adventure you are unlikely to forget!

Aphrodite’s wild beach

Some of the purest, most beautiful coastline in Cyprus can be found in Akamas, anywhere between Blue Lagoon and Aphrodite’s Baths. Aphrodite’s wild beach is practically opposite the baths, right next to the restaurant.

To get to the beach you have to descend a staircase., which unfortunately means that this isn’t easily accessible for wheelchairs.

The view from above is incredible, and typically, I found other people eyeing up my Instagram-worthy spot on the little white patio to take pictures on haha!

The beach itself is gorgeous, with calm waters that make it ideal for snorkeling (something the area is known for). Once you get down there, there are numerous little hidden beaches both blue flag and not, but all as clean and beautiful as each other!

Aphrodite’s Wild Beach isn’t a blue flag beach but it does, however, have an on-duty lifeguard, some sun loungers, showers, and a restaurant.

Baths of Aphrodite

If you didn’t know, Cyprus is also known as the birthplace of the Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love!

Aphrodite was actually rumored to have been born in Paphos, at the famous ”Petra you Romiou”.

In the Akamas Peninsula, just past the Latchi harbor, you can find Aphrodite’s baths and botanical garden

This natural grotto is shaded by lush greenery, flowers, and an old fig tree, and legend says, that the Ancient Greek Goddess Aphrodite used to bathe in the waters.

According to Greek mythology, Aphrodite met her lover Adonis here and they fell in love instantly

The site is linked to the Aphrodite Cultural Route, and there is a small nature trail at the entrance of the baths to your left. Don’t worry about missing it, it is clearly marked with signs!

Koufotripis Beach

I fell in LOVE with this spot! Hidden deep in the Akamas Peninsula, on the way to the Blue Lagoon, is this tiny little secret beach. I fell in love with it instantly, but beware! It is indeed tiny, so don’t take a large group over there!

Blue Lagoon -Cyprus By Car

Blue Lagoon is the largest natural bay in Akamas Peninsula and it is located in the center of the famous Akamas National Park.

This jaw-dropping lagoon has become one of the most popular spots in Cyprus! The reason? Just look at that dazzling, turquoise water and white sandy beach.

Amazing coves, coral reef life, fish, aquatic life, and shells are abundant here, so snorkeling is a must!

How to reach Blue Lagoon

Seeing as this is a huge attraction in Cyprus, there are daily boat trips to Blue Lagoon from Latchi Harbour. Blue Lagoon is a 45-minute sail from there, and you can choose a half-day, full-day, or sunset tour!

Of course, you can also access Blue Lagoon while on your Cyprus by car adventure – ie on your Akamas Safari! You will definitely need a quad, buggy, or four-wheel drive car for the ride. It is off-road and adventurous, but definitely doable!

Please bear in mind there are two ways of accessing the lagoon by car.

Fontana Amoroza

Cyprus By car – Moutti Tis Sotiras

WOW! Moutti tis Sotiras is 370m high and it rises directly above Akama’s north coast – dishing out, out of this world views of Akamas and Paphos right in front of your eyes!

It’s very difficult to explain the feeling of being there, with no sound around but the wind blowing in your ears and the sun giving life and color to what’s in front of you. It’s almost humbling, as you feel so small in the grand scheme of it all!

The mountain is made of limestone, and the road to it is rough. I suggest doing it with a quad or buggy as part of your Akamas Safari!

Latsi Harbour

Latchi harbor is a gorgeous port, where the fishermen still bring in the fresh catch of the morning!

It is practically unheard of, to go to Latchi and not eat fish! Therefore, a little stop at the many tavernas around the harbor is just the ticket for those hungry bellies!

A traditional Cyprus fish meze should set you back around 24-35 euros per person. The menu is fixed into many smaller plates to share (think tapas, but better!) If a restaurant charges more, don’t eat there, and find somewhere else!

There are also a few kiosks for essentials, but keep on driving to Polis if you require something else.

Poli Chrysochous – otherwise known as Polis is the closest town, situated just 2km away. There you can find large supermarkets, and a larger choice of restaurants, etc.

Ayii Anargyroi Natural Healing Spa Resort

Relaxation, wellness, and luxury! The Ayii Anargyroi Natural Healing Spa Resort offers a unique escape to an oasis of thermal baths and spas, beautiful flower and fruit tree gardens and fish ponds.

The Rooms

The rooms are dreamy and made for relaxation! The hotel is completely renovated with stone, wood, and earthy colors – a perfect blend of traditional and modern.

The beds are impossible comfortable, the views are impecable, and at my bungalow, both the jacuzzi and the shower use thermal water, so essentially, you have your own private spa in your room!

Everything is decorated in style, plenty of wood and white colors soothed my eyes. I was instantly relaxed upon entering this bungalow (I stayed in number 46).

You will find yourself drawn to the serenity of the room! Some jacuzzi time, book reading in the veranda amidst the sounds of birds chirping, and of course, deep, blissful sleep.

The Spa

At the spa, we experience the magic of the area’s thermal waters, which give life to our joints and muscles! It really is a special and one-of-a-kind experience.

The spa is huge and just stunning. There are three treatment pools with natural spring water in varying temperatures for kinesiotherapy, rheumatology, and phlebology.

Moreover, there are medical spa treatments for conditions such as arthritis, rheumatism, gout, and joint pain. Additionally, you can choose wellness treatments including face and body care, massage therapies, fitness and physiotherapy.

A little note that’s worth mentioning! The relaxation/meditation room after the spa is one of the most beautiful ones I have seen in Cyprus. Given the fact I travel so much, this says a lot!

The Food

Well, take a look at any one of my articles, and you won’t be surprised I’m talking about food..again! Yeap, you knew this was coming! I loved the food here, and I tried both the breakfast, lunch and dinner service.

Breakfast is different at Ayii Anargyroi. There is a small buffet of breads, nuts, cheeses etc (basically a continental breakfast) that everyone helps themselves to.

Additionally, upon being seated, there is an a la carte menu to choose cooked dishes too. There are options like fried eggs, poached eggs, omelets, and chocolate crepe.

In fact, you can choose one than one hot dish per person. And it is all included in the price of your breakfast. Don’t forget to up your vitamins with a delicious fruit smoothie!

As a responsible traveler who advocated for ethical tourism, I applaud this initiative as it keeps gluttony at bay ( and helps my waistline escape my greedy eyes).

Most importantly, it reduces the tons of wasted food that hotels all around the world are throwing in the trash every day!

Dinner was phenomenal! -it was served in the outdoor restaurant with views of the pool.

There was a set 4- course menu when I visited the hotel.

I sampled puff pastry with mushrooms, stuffed pepper with feta cheese, and pomegranate and avocado salad!

Then came the mains, a choice between creamy ravioli with cream cheese, and sundried tomato, and lamb with cauliflower puree!

Desserts were fruits, lava cake, and walnut cake. Yum!

Instagram-worthy sunset views? Check! Look no further than Argaka Bridge, which’s located 7 km northeast of Polis Chrysochous.

The bridge provides the kind of perfect instagrammable background that will photograph beautifully, at all hours of the day. But like, I said, those sunset views are pretty special!

Karydhia Cottage Villa, Pano Arodes

If you fancy booking a stay as a group, then Karhydia cottage villa is an excellent choice! I loved my stay here!

Karydhia is a three-bedroom cottage villa with its own parking, sunbathing terrace, and an outdoor pool in the pretty village of Arodes, 3 km from Kathikas.

Inside the villa, you will find 3 rooms with a kitchenette, a dining area, and a living room. The open plan kitchen and dining area are decorated beautifully with traditional Cyprus artifacts from generations past!

The house, although modern, still holds its traditional character with plenty of wood and stone!

The master bedroom is en-suite and has its own shower and WC. The second bedroom has a double bed and the third is a room with 2 single beds.

All three bedrooms have individual and well-working AC units, although I didn’t use mine! Even in June the climate is perfect in Arodes!

The villa can essentially accommodate up to 6 people so it is perfect for families or groups of friends!

Pano Arodes Village – Cyprus By Car

The village of Pano Arodes is stunningly positioned on the Laona plateau, at the edge of the Akamas Nature Reserve. It leadss down to the breathtaking Avakas Gorge and the coast.

Its location is perfect, as it’s situated close enough to drive to Kathikas, Polis, Pomos, Akamas and so much more!

IIts a small and tranquil village filled with plenty of greenery, vineyards, and stone houses. Furthermore, you will find a cute village square that always looks immaculately clean!

Religious tourism is also possible here – as the village is of high importance.

Here you will find what is believed to be the only church in the world dedicated to Agios Kalandionas. The saint just so happens to be the patron saint of Arodes!

Lysos Village – Cyprus By Car

Another sleepy village close enough to Akamas is Lysos, a village with interesting architecture, and comfortable cooler climate.

Paphos airport is 46km and Akamas is 34km drive. You can drive to Paphos for a night out or a summer party in 30 km too.

While in Lysos you can enjoy horse riding at Marias Horse Trekking and delicious Cyprus lunch at Erotokritos Tavern

Kyperounta Village- The 12 Best Things To Do On A Road Trip

We are located in Kyperounta, in the District of Limassol, and specifically, in the area of Pitsilia.

Kyperounta is the highest village in Cyprus as it is located in the Troodos Mountains, at an altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level, and took its name from Kyperi – the type of wood that abounds in the area!

This traditional village is characterized by steep uphill roads, vineyards, and houses with tiles and small picturesque courtyards.

Among its attractions are the church of Agios Arsenios and Agia Marina, which dates from the 18th century, the impressive Kyperounta Winery and the Adventure Mountain Park.
 Here, we spent hours of fun doing archery, rock climbing, paintballing, orientation lessons and so much more! 

We take a break for food in ouzeries and taverns, and when we get enough strength, we go for hiking on one of the two nature trails of the village.

Kyperounta Climate and Weather

The weather conditions in Kyperounta are excellent throughout the whole year with cold icy winters down to 0 degrees and mild dry summers.

The uniqueness of its climate is what urged the colonial government in the 1930s ,to established a sanatorium,which is now the Kyperounta hospital.

The sanatorium was extremely beneficial to patients suffering from respiratory or chest-related diseases, and to this day, many people move to Kyperounta and find their symptoms lessening and even dissapearing!

1. Marvel at the majestic Agios Arsenios Church

One of the most majestic and jaw-dropping churches I have witnessed, Agios Arsenios is one of the kind.

It is thought to be the largest church in Cyprus and one of the only ones on the island that recreate the typical basilicas in Cyprus in the 5th and 6th centuries.

Τhe impressive church of Agios Arsenios of Cappadocia is a revival of an early Christian five-aisled wooden-roofed basilica

Ιτ tands out for the marble floor, the colonnades with the Corinthian capitals, the early Christian despotic throne, the pulpit and the iconostasis with its majestic icons

Even though it is big enough to sit over 750 people (!) – a fact that the 1500 strong population of Kyperounta is very happy about, there is something incredible calming, soothing and spiritual about this church.

I would even go as far as to say it is the most beautiful Christian church I have laid eyes on!

2. Hike the challenging Doxa Si O Theos – Madari Nature Trail

Are you up for a challenge? This 3.8 km nature trail is hard, and long, but absolutely worth it!

This is probably why it’s called ”Doxa Si O Theos” – which literally means ”Thank God” in Greek because you will most likely say thank God when it’s over haha!

At the beginning of the trail, there is a cold water fountain, so I suggest you will up your water bottles! Next up is 13 steps and the trail begins.

From its starting point, the trail is uphill, and at some points, extremely uphill, so hiking shoes or comfortable trainers are definitely a must!

The trail is long and marvelous, with stunning views all around! You can see Pentadaktilos mountains, Troodos mountains and Morfou, along with panoramic views all around from an altitude of 1400-1600m!

On the east, you see the highest point at the peak of Madari! There are many different points in which you can observe the views along the trail.

Important nature trail Information

Degree of difficulty: 3 (very difficult, children should avoid)

Format: Linear

ATTENTION! The trail is only linear if you take it on its own. It is circular if you continue to one of the other trails present in the area where the fire lookout station is located.

If you choose to not follow a circular trail, then beware that you will need to walk back another 3.8 km ( Good luck, and may the Gods be ever in your favor!)

3. Refuel with coffee and dessert at Hovoli Cafe

After an exhilirating and exaugting hike, we definitely needed a caffeine and sugar boost! And thank God for Hovoli Cafe!

This spot is super popular with the locals of Kyperounta and i can see why!

From the outside, it looks like a small traditional coffee shop with chairs and tables made of wood.

On the other side, there is a comfortable and colorful sitting area with beautiful mountain views and even shisha!

A quick strong Cyprus coffee later, and we are ready to devour the irresistible spoon sweets, carrot walnut cakes (yum!) and the refreshing homemade lemonade!

An hour later, and we are refueled, refreshed and ready to continue our adventure!

4. Stroll Kyperounta’s village center

Around the village square, you will find cafes, restaurants, the community center, and Agia Marina church. Take time to stroll the streets and discover the beautiful houses and cobbled streets pictured below!

A lovely street thats worth photographing is ”Palia Geitonia” – which translates to Old Neighborhood.

From Agia Marina Ouzeri restaurant – which you will have on your left hand side, keep walking straight past the church and turn left. There you will find a gorgeous little neighborhood that is super traditional and so picturesque!

5. Light a candle at Agia Marina Church

The holy saints of the community are Agia Marina and Agios Arsenios the Cappadocian. 

The central church of the community is dedicated to Agia Marina, which in its current form is a three-aisled wooden-roofed basilica of the 18th century.

The current church is an extension of an older wood-carved church and stands out for the beautiful wood-carved iconostasis, and the unique three-aisled roof supported by wooden pillars. It celebrates on July 17

6. Enjoy a meat feast at Kyperia Tavern and Bar

On Saturday, we stopped for lunch at Kyperia Tavern, located just off the center of Kyperounta. This is a tavern, restaurant and bar too, with a beautiful large outside and inside area.

We opted to try things off the menu, although Kyperia Restaurant also offers traditional Cyprus Meze.

Along with the traditional starters, we got various other dishes like sausages and halloumi, grilled chicken, lamb chops, vegetables and pork in koumandaria (port wine) and apples!

Each dish was brought out in its own time, a sure sign that it was cooked fresh and on the spot!

I was particularly impressed with the pork in koumantaria and apples (and im not even an apple fan!)

I devoured the perfectly cooked tender pork and the sauce was phenomenal.

Orienteering…Lord knows I need a lesson or ten, as I am forever getting lost everywhere! This is a recent addition to Adventure Mountain Park and a great skills learning experience for adults and children.

It’s an exciting outdoor adventure sport that combines mental and physical ability, as well as map reading and direction finding skills, to enable a participant to navigate routes between isolated control points using just a compass and a map.

Taking place in the forest next to Adventure Mountain Park, participants (orienteers) aged 8 and up have to find their way along unfamiliar courses located between checkpoints, running or walking, all the while determining the best route to complete the set course in the fastest time, using quick decision making and navigation skills.

All gear including control flags and control cards will be provided by the park.

Rock Climbing

This was so much fun! Rock climbing is no doubt one of the most exciting and adrenaline fueled outdoor adventures that you can experience at Adventure Mountain Park.

It definitely pushes the body and mind and requires determination, perseverance, coordination, physical strength, intuition and good instinct to overcome the challenges this activity involves.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert climber, there are instructors and professional equipment to help you learn to climb the artificial rock wall, quickly progressing in ways that you may never have thought possible to accomplish.

Fresh fish in a village? Well, yes! When the restaurant is owned by a man born and raised in Paphos, then yes!

He is so commited to providing only the freshest fish, that he drives the 96 km to Paphos four times a week to buy the best, seasonal fresh fish

And it is no wonder that it is so popular. The fish is fresh, tender and cooked to perfection, and thank GOD for the fresh Cypriot potatoes (and not a frozen chip in sight!)

11. Join the Annual Kyperounta Apple Festival

The village is famous for its production of apples and it actually produces 1/3 of apples on the island! There are 6 apple varieties including ”Nachi” – a variety that is a cross between apples and pears!

Every year, on the second weekend of October, the Apple Festival attracts thousands, who come to try delicious pies, sweets, juices, and everything else, made with local Kyperounta apples.

12. Take a 5 minute drive to Ekfraseis Winery

Simple, simple, and ergonomic – this is the Ekfraseis Winery in Chandria, just 5 minutes from Kyperounta.

And this is exactly how Christos Vassiliadis is, the wine producer and seasoned winemaker who takes care to leave his own personal mark at every production stage.

Since 2013, the winery operates some of the highest vineyards both in Europe and worldwide and produces quality, classy wines with a strong element of distinction.

Here you will find the classics but also some alternative inspirations of the winemaker which often lead to the creation of rare and fine wines.

Kakopetria And Galata – Tips To Explore These Picture- Perfect Villages in Cyprus

Welcome back! In this episode, we get to know Kakopetria, one of the most famous villages in the province of Nicosia.

Kakopetria is located in the valley of Solea, at an altitude of 667 meters above the beautiful Troodos Mountains. It is 55 km from Nicosia, and 46 km from Limassol.

Next to it, is the beautiful and underrated Galata village, which’s drowning in green and nature!

The wonderful natural environment, the rich greenery, the cool waters, and the ancient traditional heritage are just a few of the things you can admire in the villages. 

In Kakopetria, we cannot forget the ancient Byzantine churches, such as the monastery of St Nicholas of the Roof, the traditional Mill, and the colorful houses that invite you to admire them.

The warm hospitality that distinguishes its inhabitants, the beautiful hotels and the excellent food, are pervasive here, and so,the hours pass quickly and beautifully.

What are the top attractions to visit in Kakopetria?

Old Kakopetria Village

The old part of Kakopetria is without a doubt the most picturesque and photogenic part of the village. You will simply adore taking photographs of every inch and corner of the village!

Here you can observe beautiful traditional old stone and wooden houses, and narrow cobbled streets! You will see rows of spoons sweets resting on wooden porches, smiley locals, and pristine houses decorated with colorful flowers.

In fact, Old Kakopetria is so gorgeous, that it has been classified as an ancient monument by the Department of Antiquities, and because of this, many houses have been restored to perfection.

It is here, that you will find most of the things to explore in the village too

Klarios River Kakopetria

If you park at the Mill Hotel, you will find the beginning of the glorious Klarios River stream. The Klarios river, which has a length of approximately 25 km, stems from the Troodos Mountain and passes through the entire Solea Valley until it stops at Morphou Bay.

This mighty stream is the reason Solea Valley, is so rich in fruit trees and vegetation. The scenery here is wonderful and there is an outdoor cafe, serving refreshing, delicious lemonade too – which I rather enjoyed!

Linos Museum

The Linos Museum consists of three thematic rooms devoted to wine, bread, and oil and can be found on the main road of Old Kakopetria, right past the church.

You can observe the mangers, where donkeys used to eat, and the large tanks that were used to produce wine hundreds of years ago in Cyprus! Furthermore, there are photos and films that beautifully present the history of the Museum.

Elena Park

This little park is great to let little ones let off some steam and play! There are cute little ducks in the area too. You will find it right at the entrance of the Old Kakopetria Village.

Petra Tou Antrogynou (Androgyne Stone)

The “Petra tou Antrogynou” otherwise known as the ”stone of the married couple” is situated in the entrance of Old Kakopetria, and although I didn’t think it was anything amazing, it is the poster child of Kakopetria!

The stone comes with many old folk stories behind it; One says, that if newlyweds sat on the rock, they would have a long and happy marriage.

Another story says that the stone once moved, crushing some visitors, which then gave the village its name ”Kakopetria” – which translates to ”Bad stone”

Vateri Nature Trail Kakopetria

Vateris Nature Trail is one of my absolute favorites! It is an easy 1-kilometer-long trail, that was built on the west bank of Klarios river and passes through the dense vegetation of plane trees, alders, and oaks.

The scenery is gorgeous, and further enhanced by the small wooden bridges that are used as exit points into the old village, and also penetrate into the river and the trail.

There are many benches in different spots within the trail to take a rest while enjoying the sound of the flowing water blending with the sound of singing birds.

Towards the end of the trail, you will find the old water spring of Vateri, that gave the nature trail its name. If you are looking for a moment of peace and tranquillity in nature, don’t miss a walk here!

Agios Nikolaos Tis Stegis Unesco Church (St Nicholas Of The Roof)

St. Nicholas of the Roof is one of the nine Troodos churches that belong on the UNESCO World Heritage Site List.

The frescoes that cover its interior are excellent examples of Byzantine and post-Byzantine monumental paintings.

This magnificent church dates back to the first half of the 11th century and in it, wonderful art frescoes from the 11th to the 14th century are preserved.

Platania Picnic

Picnic lovers, barbeque lovers, and nature lovers rejoice! At Platania picnic site, you will find benches, and barbeque stations in the shady pine grove, to enjoy picnics and feasts with family and loved ones.

The biggest selling point is the kid’s play area where little ones can keep themselves entertained, giving moms and dads a much-needed break haha!

Finally. while it is not known to many, is that there is a camping site here too, with every modern facility, like toilets, shower blocks and disabled facilities.

Kakopetria Square

Kakopetria square is also known as ”New Kakopetria” . The distance between Old and New Kakopetria is small- you can walk it in 10 minutes! Here, is the village’s school – which is the most colorful and stunning school I have ever witnessed!

There is a numerous coffee shops and restaurants, a kiosk, an ice cream shop and many more! You will probably end up there after you spent a few hours exploring Old Kakopetria Village for a drink, coffee or dessert!

This lovely Inn is also located in the heart of Old Kakopetria and it is a complex of beautifully restored traditional old houses transformed into rustic little Agrotourism apartments.

The old and new co-exist beautifully here, and so, you will find the rooms decorated in the traditional old Cypriot village way, with four poster beds, wooden-beamed ceilings, fireplaces, and Jacuzzis too. At the Inn, there is a restaurant and bar, as well as a sauna too, perfect for those chilly nights!

I had some incredible food in Kakopetria, and if you are a foodie like me, you will want to know the details!

First up is a Cypriot tavern with a twist, and also a traditional family establishment, that will have locals and tourists alike, licking their plates!

Ais Giorkis Tavern

”Where Cyprus meets Crete, and together, they form a beautiful symmetry of culinary excellence!”

This tavern was gorgeous! At Ais Giorkis, you will find a perfect mix of Cypriot and Cretan cuisine, and every mouthful is a culinary journey!

The tavern serves grilled food and meze, made of seasonal ingredients from the Cypriot and the Cretan cuisines, such as snails, the feta saganaki in tomato marmalade, and the Cretan «antikristo», while the homemade orange pie dessert steals the show.

10/10 for service, as well as cleanliness and very polite staff and owners!

Stou Zoppi Tavern

Upon arriving at Zoppis Tavern, I immediately feel like I am home. Or better yet, that I am at my grandmother’s house, surrounded by family and delicious food.

The outdoor seating area and garden are large, and spacious, yet feel homey and inviting!

A quick inspection of the inside, reveals treasures from generations past – in the form of a huge collection of Cypriot household vintage memorabilia, that are as good as any museums!

The food is…incredible. The almighty Cyprus meze is elevated beautifully, and no dish is left unserved, from Cyprus souvla, to keftedakia (fried meatballs), vine leaves, and more!

As mentioned above, the tavern is a family business and everyone is all hands on deck! As a result, you will feel like you are sitting at a large family gathering, eating delicious food.

Galata Village

United with the neighboring community of Kakopetria we find Galata built on both banks of the Clarion River and literally immersed in green. Galata receives thousands of tourists every year, because of the villages a special natural beauty.

In Galata’s square, we relax under the shade of the old oak and the plane trees with the sound of the gurgling waters of the Clarion River.

We see the grace of traditional houses, with their wooden balconies and stairs; we visit taverns, and discover nature trails!

Of course, we do not fail to experience up close the exquisite cultural heritage of Cyprus through the 6 Byzantine churches of the 16th century and mainly, the one of Panagia Podithos.

Galata Bakery

The Traditional Galata Bakery is perfect for a quick snack on the road, that looks, tastes, and smells like Cyprus! as it is also known, is a traditional choice for sweet and savory snacks on your way to Galata or Kakopetria (Or Troodos in general)

Galata bakery has been in business since 1953 where Mrs. Anna Kyrillou and her husband Mr. Iakovos Kyrillou started baking bread during the summer months.

Slowly but surely, business picked up and in 1975, the modern bakery we see today was built. It is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and equipment and produces of the finest bread products available on the market.

Don’t forget to try the fresh loukoumades too (fried dough dipped in honey), the halloumi pie, and the various cookies and crackers!

Archangelos – Mylos tis Rodous Nature Trail

An unexpected surprise, this nature trail is a wonderful path of Nature called Archangelos – Mill of Rodous, and it is a must!

The 1km trail starts from the chapel of Archangelos and ends at Mylos of Rodous.

The linear path trail passes by Panagia tis Podithou (a Unesco Heritage Site church), as well as the Rodous watermill with its imposing arches and restored mill house.

You have the beauty of Karkotis river, rich Cyprus flora like walnut and carob trees, plane trees and poplars too!

Galata Churches

Panagia Podithou Unesco Church

Located in the village of Galata, the church of Panagia Podithou is one of the nine listed UNESCO World Heritage Site churches in Troodos, Cyprus.

Once belonging to a monastery, the church was built in 1502 through the donation of Demetre de Coron and his wife Helen.

The building is single-aisled with a steep-pitched beautiful timber roof. The mural paintings that cover the interior belong to the Italo-Byzantine style that appeared on the island towards the end of the 15th century.

To Spiti Tou Xeni – Galata Village

“Spiti tou Xeni” is located in the center of Galata village and although it was built in 1906, it has also been renovated in 2004.

It is a traditional stone house that consists of two independent studios. Each studio (one located on the ground floor and the other on the opposite side of the building on the first floor) have their own balcony with magnificent views of the mountains.

The gurgling sound of water from the nearby stream gives you the feeling of utter peace and relaxation!

Both studios are fully equipped with a double bed, with the possibility and space to add one more if needed. The rooms also have a kitchen, bathroom, and TV. The kitchen is equipped with an oven, coffee maker, fridge, and toaster.

The studios also have a separate bedroom, dining room, and living room.

The furnishings are traditional pieces such as iron beds and wooden beams on the ceiling, which will take you back in time.

The Very Best Things To Do In Lympia and Skarinou Villages In Cyprus

Welcome to Lympia, Skarinou, and Ayios Theodoros villages. Together, we will discover street art, incredible food, adorable donkeys, and breathtaking nature and hiking spots.

When I first took on my travel show Tia Does Agrotourism, I thought I knew Cyprus. But noooo. not really. Although local, how many of you truly know your country off by heart?

My birthplace, the insanely beautiful island of Cyprus, held so many hidden treasures deep within it, and the minute I started touring it, I realized that all these years…well I hadn’t even scratched the surface!

Stick with me, while I peel off yet another layer of Cyprus, and hand it to you on a beautiful Greek plate.

Why you should visit Lympia

Lympia is actually perfectly located between Larnaca and Nicosia. Staying in Lympia, means you are super close to Nicosia, with its historical sights and classy restaurants, and Larnaca too, with the LCA airport, the beach, and its beautiful villages!

What to See and Do in Lympia

Lympia village has recently had its 15 minutes of fame for its beautiful ”love steps” – a set of colorfully painted steps at the entrance of the village.

But hear me out, because I have a question for you! How many of you, have visited the ‘’ Love steps in Lympia, and left, before exploring the village? If you are one of these people, then keep reading!

In the village, they are planting trees and vegetable gardens, adding street art and splashes of color, and revamping old traditional houses!

At the same time, we find fresh halloumi and anari cheese, stone-built guesthouses, and colorful cobbled streets full of flowers in full bloom.

To top it all off, there is excellent Cyprus brunch, olive picking experiences, and many more. So come with me, and let’s take a walk together!

Explore the street Art on the streets of Lympia

Look how gorgeous all this street art is! I totally didnt expect to find such excellent pieces on the streets in Lympia – it reminded me of walking the streets of Instabul!

You will no doubt want to enjoy a walk and take in the work that was put in to these pieces of art!

Happy snapping at ”The Love Stairs” aka Τα Σκαλιά της Αγάπης

Did someone say Cuba? Coz this sure looks like it! The love steps in Lympia is such a Instagrammable and photographed sport – and you will find it at the entrance of Lympia Village.

The previously monotonous gray staircase was turned into a colored, piece of art by a group of young painters in the village.

This way, you are far more likely to walk to the top, and enjoy panoramic views you might have otherwise missed!

Tia’s Tip: If there are too many people there, walk around the other way to its opposite entrance, and that’s usually empty 🙂

Also, avoid visiting during times when the sun is really strong, as the colors won’t pop that way! My pictures below were taken at 5 pm!

Buy The Best Halloumi Cheese at P. A. Irakleous Ltd.

In Lympia, I tasted the most incredible halloumi and anari cheese. And when I say incredible…I really mean it! People from Nicosia, Larnaca, and all parts of Cyprus drive down to Irakleous to buy these dairy products – it was super busy when I visited.

If you are renting a cottage house or airbnb then a few of these will be excellent for breakfast!

Wood carvings?

I adore discovering businesses that elevate the Cypriot culture and religion, and when this business is passed on from generation to generation, that is the icing on the cake!

Costas Kaounaris, has been making Ecclesiastical Wood Carvings for over 20 years -and upon entering his workshop, I am in awe. There are thousands of pieces of art here, many of which I recognise from my religious tourism tours on the thousands of churches on the island.

It is practically inconceivable to imagine how these are made by hand – but one look at Costas and his two sons at work, and I am convinced that wood carving is even harder than I ever imagined!

Lympia Dam

This particular dam was built in 1977 and although hard to find (due to lack of signs), it is home to rich and rare biodiversity in Cyprus. Anything from plants, fishes, insects, and many more live here on this little unexpected oasis!

This particular dam it a fisherman's paradise - here you can fish for carps, albino, red-winged, crayfish, sea bass, perch, and many more. There is a relevant permit secured by the Department of Fisheries.

Where to stay in Lympia

Olympia

Located in Lympia, Olympia Traditional Houses provides accommodation with free WiFi, air conditioning, and access to a garden with a barbecue. Despite the fact you will get the feeling of a different era, all the houses are fully equipped with modern amenities, like Flat-screen TV, fully equipped kitchen, air-conditioning, Wi-Fi in all areas and outdoor furniture.

Where to Eat In Lympia

Sunday Brunch at Olympia Traditional House

Now THIS is what a I call a Cyprus brunch! I was fortunate enough to be invited for brunch at Olympia and i can safely tell you, you will unlike need another meal on the day!

This is a buffet service, and it is bursting at the seams with all the goodies Cyprus is renowed for!

Fresh organic eggs and vegetables, homemade jams, and bread that’s made in the wood fire oven! We sampled 3 different types of pies: Cheese pie, pumpkin pie, and olive pie! The famous ”mahalepi” (eggless cream with rose water) is on offer too and fresh fruit and lemonade and coffee.

Lunch – Peiragmena Restaurant

Peiragmena – which means ”tweaked” – is a restaurant in Lympia that offers a seasonal, but non-traditionally Cypriot-style menu with a “twist!”.

The dishes here are a modern adaptation of Cypriot and Mediterranean cuisine inspired mainly by seasonal ingredients and high-quality local produce.

As for the menu at Peiragmena Restaurant, It changes each season to ensure maximum freshness and the fullest flavors and aroma to each dish. These adaptations as well as the affordable prices are welcomed by regular diners and gastronomes alike.

Skarinou Village

At the heart of Cyprus, 190 meters above sea level and surrounded by hills, lies the picturesque village of Skarinou. Connecting the main towns of the island, Nicosia, Limassol, and Larnaka, Skarinou combines the qualities of country life with the modern amenities and luxuries of life in town.

The houses are old traditional stone buildings and the old-style identity of the village remains intact with its narrow streets leading to squares and natural openings. The villages dominant landmark is the church of The Guiding Virgin Mary (Panayia I Odigidria) which stands proud and tall at the entrance of the village, welcoming both locals and visitors.
In this small village, architectural structure and nature co-exist with tradition, culture and customs.

Golden Donkeys Farm

Love animals? Then you will love this!

A family business, with a simple philosophy: that the history and heritage of each country, are its real treasure and so, their purpose is simple – to share this treasure with each and every visitor, thus showing him, the real side of Cyprus.

My first impression is that the Golden Donkeys Farm was built with a love for our tradition and a keen eye for detail.

The entire farm is flooded with the delicate aromas of rosemary and thyme and beautifully framed by a large olive tree that is over 1500 years old.

Here we find a donkey museum, a farmhouse, but also a wax museum. The wax museum shows classic and traditional images of what life in Cyprus looked like in generations past – so it is a great way to immerse yourself in Cyprus culture!

In this beautiful farm, you can meet the 200 or so adorable donkeys they host, learn all about their wide range of award-winning donkey milk products, but also enjoy food and coffee in their restaurant.

The restaurant is a spacious space, that includes both outdoor and indoor space and seating. The menu is simple, there was a choice of 4 dishes – and we ordered one of each as you can see below in the pictures. The food was very good, basically, it is well- cooked Cyprus food dishes that you will very often find in Cypriot homes.

Dipotamos Reservoir

I love the element of water. It soothes me, calms me, centers me. And Cyprus has a LOT of water – it is an island after all!

We have paradisical beaches, that stretch as far as the eye can see. But during this tour of Cyprus, I have had the pleasure to visit plenty of dams too.

Dams are great for fishing, (when allowed), and many come attached with a nature trail so also great for walks in nature, and bird watching too!

And Dipotamos Dam is pretty gorgeous, as you can very well see. Sunsets are beautiful here, with gorgeous panoramic views!

The Dipotamos dam is located east of the village of Lefkara and north of Skarinou. It is approximately 15 minutes by car from the Golden Donkeys Farm. Dipotamos dam was built in 1985 and to this day, it provides a water storage volume of 15,500,000 cubic meters.

The river is home to 8 species of fish, but fishing is not allowed!

Panagia Odigitria

The central church of the village is the church of Panagia Odigitria. Its construction started by the local community in 1950 and was completed in 1953.

There used to be another church which was demolished. The church celebrates on the 8th of September.

Agios Theodoros Village

The small but beautiful village of Agios Theodoros is found in the province of Larnaka, 8.6 km away from Skarinou and 3km from Kofinou village.

It is built at the banks of the river Pentashoinos, 80 meters above sea level.

Akakia Beach

If you want to combine a village visit with the beach, head down to Akakia Beach! This is an organized beach, with its own beach bar, sun loungers, umbrellas and toilets.

Think of lazy moments away from the manic buzz of the central Larnaca beaches, cocktails, food, and soothing lounge music. Bliss!

Local Market of Larnaca Producers

Welcome to the Local Market of Larnaca Producers in Agios Theodoros! The Women’s Rural Association of Larnaca has put together an open-air Plastic-free traditional market that brings freshness from the producer, directly to your table!

Here we find fresh Cypriot fruits and vegetables, poultry, fresh honey and all its derivatives, jams and spoon sweets, nuts, herbs, medicinal teas, and much more! Because when women unite … they truly perform miracles!

Have a Picnic at the Orchard of the village

A quiet picnic area, surrounded by orange and jasmin trees, that provides you with plenty of shade! There are picnic tables here, and there are quite a few – about 20 of them!

The only downside is that the trees attract a few bees, so if you are allergic, you might want to give it a miss!

Cyprus Villages – Adorable Farm Visits And Religious Tourism

Welcome to another article about Cyprus villages that have a lot to offer! In this article we will talk about 2 Cyprus villages in Nicosia District – Paliometoxo and Nikitari.

In Paliometoxo, I visited the most adorable animal farm, and in Nikitari, I enjoyed religious tourism in Panagia Asinou Unesco church along with excellent food and a fair few pleasant surprises!

So keep reading to find the truth about 2 Cyprus villages that are off the radar…but totally worth a visit!

Cyprus Villages – Paliometoxo

In general, Paliometoxo is a modern village, possibly because of its close proximity to the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia! You won’t find the picturesque alleys, the cobbles streets, the colorful wooden doors, or breathtaking nature.

But Paliometoxo is a must visit for two things; The Royal Goat Farm, and Panagia Chrysogalaktousa Church!

Paliometoxo Village

The Royal Goat Farm

I love to discover places that offer pure entertainment and unique experiences for every age! The Royal Goat Farm is a warm and hospitable farm in Paliometocho village, just a few minutes outside Nicosia.

Lambs, goats, donkeys, bunnies, and all kinds of birds live harmoniously here, and you cannot get enough of just seeing and studying them!

At The Royal Goat Farm, they love tradition, and this is evident, from their classic Cypriot hospitality and their love for all creatures on earth!

Roula and Christos are the owners, and you will have a hard time meeting more kind-hearted people – that truly love what they do!

What animals are there at the Royal Goat Farm?

My goodness, there are so many! So first off, we have the most adorable goats and sheep!

Next, we have a sweet little family of Donkeys, the mother, father, and their 3-week old baby son!

There are also turkeys, chickens of various breeds (and their cute baby chicks), and geese – one of which was hatching her eggs when I visited!

You will also encounter rabbits – and let me tell you, that baby rabbits are the cutest thing there is!

Are the animals well taken care of?

The animals are loved; truly loved and taken care of in such a beautiful way! The baby lambs and goats are kept in one enclosure, and the mothers are always kept safe with their calves!

The Donkeys are kept outside in their own covered enclosure, and the male goats and sheep are kept entirely separate. On another part of the farm, there are different areas for the turkeys, another for the chickens, one for geese and lastly, an area for the rabbits!

In conclusion, each species has their own large space, that is filled with food, water and shade. All the animals are released every morning and spent their whole day outside grazing, eating, and generally being…animals!

They only go indoors at nightfall and during designated feeding times! Each morning, the goats and sheep are milked, and then off they go to enjoy a day of fun and freedom on the vast premises of the farm!

Are there any other activities at the farm apart from the animals?

Absolutely! For starters, the farm is in the process of finishing building a beautiful outdoor restaurant right on the farm’s premises! The restaurant will be offering a set of traditional and seasonal Cypriot dishes, and themed nights.

There is also a certified station for the preparation of halloumi cheese, goat cheese, and anari, all of which you can book to take a workshop in!

In the wood-fired oven outside, you can observe the art of traditional bread making – which you can later devour in the beautiful brunch you will be eating.

Of course, I took part in every activity and workshop available – quite clearly I didn’t want to leave!

I met, cuddled, and milked the animals, made bread in the wood-fired oven, made cheese for ”flaounes” – ( traditional pastries with cheese and raising made during Easter!), and ate an amazing Cypriot Brunch.

In conclusion, at the Royal Goat Farm, you can:

Visit the farm and meet/play with the animals
Eat Cyprus brunch ( and soon lunch/dinner at the restaurant)
Take a bread-making workshop
Take a halloumi and anari cheese workshop

Panagia Chrysogalaktousa – Paliometoxo

After you finish visiting The Royal Goat Farm, I highly suggest a visit to the beautiful Panagia Chrysogalaktousa church, which is located in the heart of Paliometoxo Village.

This 19th-century church is built of limestone porphyry stones in the shape of a single-aisled basilica.

Its architecture is in line with the Byzantine style that most temples have built from the last years of Ottoman rule until the middle of the 20th century.

The bell tower is beaytiful, and it is built with the same stone as the rest of the Temple. It has unique and elaborate carvings all over the body. I also observed intricate shapes and carvings in the windows and entrances of the church.

From 2013 to 2017, the church underwent extensive renovations! The exterior masonry was cleaned and repaired and the roof of the temple was restored with the installation of new semi-cylindrical tiles.

Work was also done inside the church where the masonry was preserved and a new floor of traditional Cypriot plaster was placed.

In the center of the main church, where the foundations of the medieval church were located, the surface was covered with a glass floor and lighting was placed to better highlight the space. You can see the foundations of the ancient church under the glass floor, which i thought was a lovely touch!

All the wood-carved parts of the temple (doors, windows, gynaeconite, pulpit, episcopal throne, image stalls, iconostasis) have been preserved. 

The old chandeliers of the temple were preserved and relocated, and the bell tower was fixed and cleaned. 
Finally, the surrounding area of the church was beautified with the landscaping of the precinct with Cobblestone paving and pebbles.

Cyprus Villages – Nikitari Village

In Nikitari, we find mansions of old traditional architecture, picnic areas, taverns with courtyards and lovely views and of course, nature trails, in the luscious state forest.

Panagia Asinou Church

The Christian Orthodox Easter is approaching, and with joy and excitement Ι visit the impressive stone-built Byzantine church of Panagia Asinou, which is a building of the 12th century.

This church is located in the village of Nikitari in the province of Nicosia and is of course included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Do you need to book in advance to visit Panagia Asinou Church?

Panagia Asinou is, as mentioned above, a Church protected by Unesco. This means, that for its preservation, it does not operate daily and it is only open for visitors on Sundays!

Im not sure I agree with this, as so many people might wish to visit on a weekday or on Saturday, but it is what it is!

Please note, that photography and videography are strictly forbidden in Panagia Asinou. The same rules apply for all Cyprus villages with Unesco Churches.

What restaurants are near Panagia Asinou Church?

There are two restaurants within a minute from Panagia Asinou Church. Both were open on Sunday I visited, and both are traditional Cyprus Meze restaurants.

One is ”Stavros Tis Asinou” and the other is Forviotissa Restaurant – which was my choice and it was excellent! Let me tell you about it below!

Forviotissa Restaurant

This restaurant is one of those family businesses that understand the culture and culinary excellence of Cyprus.

They skillfully take the art of the Cyprus meze and elevate it so that everything you eat is an incredible culinary journey through the island’s top dishes. Warning; Make sure you arrive hungry!

Cyprus taverns are notorious for serving so much food, that it is simply impossible to eat. At Forviotissa restaurant, the food was plentiful, but in no excess – which makes my eco-friendly side very happy!

In their large outdoor space, overlooking the endless green of the forest, they can entertain a large number of customers whilst keeping up with the social distancing that is essential in Cyprus at the moment.

The menu consists of huge array of starters dips, bread, potatoes, and meats like souvla and souvlaki (skewers of meat barbequed on an open coal fire).

There are also cooked traditional dishes that you don’t often find in taverns, and the spoon sweets and caramel pudding at the end, are to die for. Highly recommend!

Asinou- Agios Theodoros Nature Trail

This gorgeous nature trail starts at the eastern side of Agios Theodoros village and ends at The Virgin Mary of Asinou church.

The trail is deep into the Aderfoi Forest and it will reward you with amazing views through the beautiful green hills of Paliospora village, the forested mountain of Faraklou, and the Pentadaktylos mountain.

And while we are on the subject of nature..consider finishing your road trip by taking a 15-minute drive from Nikitari to Xyliatos Reservoir. The reservoir consists of the Xyliatou Dam and the nature trail too, which is a relaxing trail perfect for leisurely hikers.

Xyliatos Dam

Along the trail, you will have a chance to spot endemic bird and plant species to the island, including the Cyprus warbler and frogs, as well as, the Cyprus skullcap.

The trail is approximately 4km long and takes an average of one and a half hours to complete.

What are the top attractions to visit in Platres Cyprus?

Platres is a green resort immersed in dense vegetation at the heart of the Troodos mountains. Here, of course, we have the beautiful nature trails and the waterfalls of Kalidonia and Myllomeris, which are among the highest in Cyprus.

We find botanical gardens, cycling routes and trout fish farming. In combination with the wild nature, we stumble across picturesque churches, traditional architecture, cobbled streets and fountains with cool cold water!

In particular, Caledonia Waterfall is the real star of the village, although nature has graciously gifted Platres Cyprus with a plethora of wonders for you to explore. Let’s list them down below!

In Platres Cyprus, there are actually 2 waterfalls – One is Caledonia of course, which is a waterfall that receives thousands of visitors per year – especially keen hikers!

But there is also a lesser-known, that has only recently enjoyed popularity, and this is Millomeris Waterfall.

1. Caledonia Waterfalls – Platres Cyprus

This beautiful waterfall is one of the highest in Cyprus and is surrounded by lush forest! It is most popular in summer, as it offers a cooler retreat from the Cyprus scorching sun.

But it is actually as its most gorgeous form during the Spring months of March and April. The waterfall is raging during those months, as it is fed by January’s and February’s rainfall, there is no dust or humidity, and spring makes every color more vibrant than ever before.

This 12meter majestic waterfall is one of the highest and most well-known in Cyprus! Put on your hiking shoes and enjoy the various trails that lead up to the waterfall.

Falling in love with nature will be inevitable, and once you get to the top, you will be rewarded with unparalleled beauty!

To get to the waterfall, you have to hike the 3km trail through the lush forest. The trail can be divided into 2 parts, the higher one that leads to the waterfalls, and the lower one, that leads from the waterfalls to Platres village.

You need a pretty good fitness level for this hike, and you certainly need a good pair of trainers or some hiking shoes. The hike to Caledonia waterfall is 120 minutes long.

Along the trail you will observe many species of local flora. Take a stop at some point, relax and enjoy the natural sound of the wind on the tree leaves and the sweet bird singing.

Once you get to the top, you will be rewarded be a raging waterfall that leaves you breathless!

I remember doing this hike as a child! We used to have a summer house in Platres Cyprus, and we often hiked the trail, and had a picnic off the side of the waterfall. Bliss!

Fun fact: The name Caledonia Falls actually originates from the swallow birds singing during spring and summer evenings.

Shortcut to Caledonia Waterfall

Don’t feel like hiking for this long? Don’t worry, because you can get there in 40 minutes via a shortcut. This trail is highly popular with Cypriots ( This nation truly hates to walk – probably a result of Cyprus not having a public transport system).

To access it, simply park at Psilo Dentro Trout Farm and Restaurant, and the entrance is right there, clearly marked.

Also, please don’t believe the lies..! Many sites say that the trail is 20 minutes long – and I’m sorry but unless you are planning to RUN the entire hike, and jump across the river like a goat… this trail is NOT 20 minutes haha!

It is 45 minutes with various stops here and there to take in the breathtaking scenery along the way! It still cuts your hike time by half though, so it isn’t a bad option if you have children or are in a rush!

2. Millomeris Waterfalls – Platres Cyprus

A waterfall deep in the mountains of Platres that cascades from a height of 15 meters! There was no access to this nature’s wonders until recently, but you can now reach it easily, by either hiking for 1km or by using the other entrance which only requires a 5-minute walk!

By car, take the road to Platres through Moniatis and just before you reach the village’s entrance takes a left turn – the sign will say ”Millomeris” and ”Milia Bridge”. Park your car and walk for five minutes on the trail that leads to the falls.

Alternatively, you can use the other route and hike the 1.5 Km trail instead! The starting point of this trail is at the entrance of Platres, just before the Panagias Faneromenis church. The route is relatively smooth, so I would say it has medium difficulty.

3. Spend a day of adventure at Sparti Rope Park

I had such an awesome time here!! Sparti Rope Park is an adventure park for kids and adults that will test your limits!

Sparti is all about getting out, having fun, and being adventurous. It is the number 1 rope adventure park in Cyprus with more than 140 games and 11 Zip Lines set in the beautiful forest of Platres and Troodos!

What I love about the park is that is an all-inclusive park. Children as young as 2 years old, and adults of all ages are welcome here, and there are a plethora of activities for everyone here!

I love the creativity behind each game, especially the ziplining for the younger children – they really teach you how to build up to it!

I am sure you will be wondering what to wear to freely move and be comfortable. Personally, I would advise sports clothes and sneakers- and definitely wear tighter trousers as the equipment will sit more comfortably that way.

Platres is also notorious for being cold and often rainy, so always take extra clothes for the rain and a long sleeve top if it gets chilly.

4. Visit the Krios River

Krios River brings life to the village of Platres Cyprus! The river can be accessed from various places as it comes from Mount Olympus and connects the two great waterfalls and the medieval bridge of Milia.

Through its root, a green valley with unique flora, fauna, and waterfalls is formed. The water flow is continuous, although it is at its most beautiful during spring!

”Krios” in Greek, means cold – and the river is just that! Super cold and refreshing, you will want to taste the water, and might even be brave enough to take your shoes off and walk in it!

5. Get the best panoramic views of Platres Cyprus at Ayia Irene Rock

Want to explore Platres Cyprus off the beaten path? Then a visit to Ayia Irene Rock is a must!

Located in the northeast of the village on the road leading from Mesa Potamos to Psilodentro Area is this secluded forest area that is not known to many, but definitely deserves a visit!

A mere 5 minute walk into the forest and you will find yourself facing this gigantic rock. From there, you can see the best panoramic views you can hope for and enjoy the outstanding natural beauty.

A destination that not many people know about, but one that is a must visit!

The panoramic view from the top of the rock will leave you speechless, revealing the majestic nature of the Cyprus mountains and all of Platres below.

7. Take pictures of the medieval Milia Bridge

MIlia Bridge is so beautiful! It is one of the old surviving landmarks that still stand intact, in a lush forest setting that looks like it’s straight out of a fairytale!

It’s situated just below the village inside the forest and once you park, it is only a 5-minute walk to get there. Milia Bridge used to provide a crossing point over Krios Potamos.

8. Take a Chocolate making workshop in Platres Cyprus

Rated as one of the top ten ‘must-visit places in the Cyprus Mountains by the Scandinavian Tourist Organisation (SNB) I found this activity to be both fun, relaxing, and educational!

I personally advise you to take part in a chocolate-making workshop! In the workshop, you will learn about the history of chocolate, sample different chocolates from around the world, and make your own chocolate bars to take home too!

Take a stroll through the village, and enjoy the picturesque cobbled streets, and quaint little shops with the irresistible forest backround! 
There are several fountains with cold, cool water - that Platres is notorious for.

During your walk, you will stumble across some beautiful churches, see locals taking a stroll, hikers preparing for an adventure, and families enjoying a leisurely lunch.

There is life and beauty to be found in Platres Cyprus, and you can discover a lot of it, on foot!

Skylight Restaurant

Ok…yum! This restaurant is FANTASTIC, and I have to admit I didn’t expect to find such a fine dining experience in the heart of a traditional village like Platres Cyprus!

But I stand corrected, and Skylight is now firmly on my favorite restaurants’ list!

For starters, the restaurant itself is beautiful, from the table setting to the stunning well-kept gardens outside.

Pork in Coumantaria and Honey

The food at the Skylight Restaurant…well as you can see from the pictures, is impressive, to say the least! The plates are all so incredibly well cooked and presented.

I had the steak Diane, which was cooked to a perfect medium-rare, and the pork in coumantaria (Cypriot port wine) and honey was delicious too.

As for starters, I personally tried the mussels in tomato sauce, the Ceasar salad, and the mushrooms stuffed with cream cheese that were simply outstanding!

The menu also offers a Cyprus meze option too, and various other fish options!

If you can fit any more food in, do take advantage of the sweets and fruits buffet, that is filled to the brim with delicious desserts and fresh seasonal fruits!

Fresh Trout at Psilo Dentro Restaurant

Remember when I told you that you can take a shortcut hike to Caledonia? Well, right at the entrance of the hiking trail, you will find the Psilo Dentro Trout Farm and Restaurant. It is one of the most famous and beautiful areas of Platres.

Here, amongst the trees and beautiful forests, you will find a beautiful restaurant with a huge outdoor area.

The restaurant is famous for its fresh trout, and It is no wonder, as there is over 16.000 fresh trout happily swimming right below the restaurant!

The menu is rather large, with dishes catering to all tastes and ages, but I obviously went for the trout, and it was delicious!

If you are looking to escape from the hot summer heat yet you are not interested in spending a day by the beach, visiting Platres is ideal! No matter the heat in Cyprus, Platres will always be cooler in the day and definitely chilly in the evenings!

Winter: The typical high temperature for the winter months: December, 9°C, January 10°C, and 14°C in February.

Spring: During the spring months of March, April and May, the standard high temperatures are 14°C, with May reaching 20°C.

Summer: During the summer months of June, July, and August, when the rest of Cyprus experiences 35-45 °C, Platres Cyprus only reaches 28°C max!

Autumn: The autumn months of September, October, and November start at 23 °C, and drop to 13°C as the months progress.

If you are visiting for more than a day, do try to combine Platres with the neighboring village of Pera Pedi, which was built during the Byzantine years.

If you are a fan of wine and liqueurs, you will want to visit Constantinou winery!

Since 1992, the winery has been producing quality coffee and orange liqueurs, and in 2000 their first wine joined the family.

This modern winery was built in 2009 and since then, produces 200,000 bottles of wine per year. 
From their 8 different wine varieties, I choose my personal favorite; a dry white wine called ‘’Ayioklima’’

14. Enjoy a sunset like no other, at Pera Pedi Dam Cyprus

So many of you asked me to tell you where this small dam is! It is located in Pera Pedi Village, the neighboring village of Platres Cyprus, and it is built over the Krios River.

It sits beautifully at an altitude of 800 meters, surrounded by the evergreen pine forest between Pera Pedi and Platres. At just 12,000 square meters, with a capacity of 55,000 cubic tons of water, it is one of the smallest dams in Cyprus, but to me, it Is one of the most beautiful because of its unique setting!

It is home to a beautiful biotope, that various fish and ducks call home, so it is ideal for bird watching and fishing! The dam is also part of cycling routes that reach up to Mesa Potamo

Pelendri Village

In mountainous Limassol and just 15 minutes from Agros, we arrive in Pelendri, a village with natural beauty, and rich cultural heritage that will win you over from the very first visit!

Known for its annual Zivania Festival, the magnificent taverns, a special winery, and of course the church of the Holy Cross, a 12th century building, and one that is included in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Wine, fruit, and vegetables are also in abundance in Pelendri

Pelendri has a lot to offer, so let's go for a walk and explore it together!

The best things to do in Pelendri

1. Explore Pelendri Village of foot

Pelendri is known for its traditional architecture and its maintenance of culture. In the town center, you will find great examples of traditional local architecture that will take you on a journey back to different, and simpler times.

The homes are crafted with local stones and the window blinds and doors are all made from local woods. Not all of the houses are picture-perfect or maintained as they should be, so I would like to re-visit and see if changes are made in the future!

2.Wine tasting at Pelendri’s Jewel – Tsiakkas Winery

Τsiakkas winery gives you another excellent reason for an excursion to the beautiful Pelendri village. Overlooking the beautiful Troodos mountain range.  among pines and vineyards we enjoy a special experience!

Here, you can taste 9 different varieties of wine, as well as other experimental wines, and of course, the zivania for which the village is famous for! 

The winery is a family business - since 1988 - and their love for their legacy is evident throughout. When i visited, there were huge works underway that will ultimately elevate Tsiakkas to the top of his game, and I am excited to see the outcome! 

20 hectares of vineyards - both their own and others that they rent out - are cultivated with love and care and produce wines such as commandaria, mavro, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay barrique and many more.

Opening Hours: Open from 10 am to 4 pm except for Sundays. (this is subject to change, as the winery might soon be opening on Sundays). Closed from 31st December until 6th January

3. Light a candle at Timios Stavros Unesco Church

The beautiful Holy Cross Church is decorated with exquisite wall paintings and frescoes of the Palaiologan period and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Originally built around the middle of the 12th century, it underwent various renovations and additions to presently appear as a three aisle church with a beautiful dome

4. Religious tourism in Pelendri- Panayia Katholiki

If you like to explore old churches and learn about their history or if you are into art, then you should head to the Panayia Katholiki church in the village.

It is only a 5-minute walk from the church of Timiou Stavrou, and it is no longer used as a house of worship.

The church was built in the 17^th century and there is an ecclesiastical museum attached to it. The church showcases rare heirlooms from the 12th to the 19th centuries. The walls of the temple are built with natural, local stone, and its most interesting element is the stone decor, particularly the fishbone pattern above the window of the sanctuary.

The size and historical value of the temple led to the Holy Metropolis of Limassol, in collaboration with the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation, the Department of Antiquities, and the local authorities, to turn its interior into a painting treasury. The collection of icons it houses include notable samples of Byzantine art in Cyprus, and almost all the icons featured on the iconostasis, which depict the Virgin Mary with Christ, Saint John the Theologian, and Saint Mamas, are influenced by Italian art of the 16th century.

5. Have a picnic at Kolokasi Park Picnic area in Pelendri

Are you a picnic or barbeque lover? If the answer is yes, then a visit to Kolokasi Park is a must!

Visitors looking to explore the flora and fauna of the Troodos Mountains, or just take in the beauty of nature, will want to head to the Pelendri visitor’s area. There, you can explore all the various trails that lead from the area and take in the surroundings. At Kolokasi park, you can have a picnic or barbeque in a beautiful setting!

6. Taste traditional baked goods at Pelendritiko bakery

The village is known for the bakery ‘Pellentritiko’ that produces fresh bread daily and other delights. 3.000 loaves of bread are baked here per week, and the star of this bakery is the famous Pelendritiko bread! The bakery has been producing goods since 1960 in their bakery in Pelendri, and deliver to many locations in Limassol too. Buy a loaf of Pelendritiko bread to take home, for breakfasts that smell and taste of Cyprus!

7. Eat the best Cyprus meze in a Pelendri Tavern

Symposio is not just any tavern! You simply must try the 18 hr slow-cooked Kleftiko with koumantaria that is cooked in the traditional wood-fired oven, along with the ‘’Antikristo’’, smoked ribs, and organic seasonal produce!

In the summer months, the family’s small farm equips the tavern with organic, delicious produce – it doesn’t get any more agriculturally friendly than that! Imagine everything you are served, grows on a farm right in front of your eyes – this certainly sparked my interest!

Most people enjoy the meze here – which is a set menu of 20+ taste dishes (like tapas, but better – sorry Spain!), but there is also an opportunity to order a la carte – perfect for vegetarians or vegans, etc.

The menu is seasonal – so it plays with the village’s strengths and what grows locally in the mountains of Pelendri according to the time of year. If you are lucky, you might even get to try ”Morchelles” – a rare mushroom that grows in the area!

Agros Cyprus

Ιn the area of Pitsilia, at an altitude of 1100 meters and adorned in May with thousands of roses, we meet one of the undisputed protagonists of the area!

Agros is only a 15- minute drive from Pelendri so the two villages can be enjoyed even on the same day or during a weekend escape out of the city!

In this beautiful setting, houses appear to graciously balance on the slopes of the Troodos mountains!

Tradition and progressive innovation blend harmoniously in Agros, and that is why I am not surprised to find everything here – from modern sports facilities, rich entertainment and cultural life.

The village locals are characterized as hard-working and passionate about their village and surroundings. The village’s modern highways make it a connection point between the cities of Nicosia and Limassol and the mountain region of Troodos.

So let’s go together to see what Agros has to offer- the restaurants, and nature trails, the famous local products, and of course, everything that has to do… with roses!

8. Explore the village

Take your time to really explore the village, the little winding streets, the traditional houses, and the almond trees that are in full bloom during March and April.

In May, the village truly comes alive, as it is dressed in pink by the thousand of roses that are ready for picking by that time!

9. Continue with a Cyprus Brunch at Mpakaliko tou Hapsi

Traditional Cypriot Brunch made with love and 100% local products like fresh eggs, locally made halloumi, and smoked meats from the village!

At Mpakaliko tou Hapsi – things are kept simple – and the result is gorgeous. Just three or four tables outside, and a cute and dainty interior that can also sit another 4-5 tables.

The menu is equally no frills! The famous ”mpoukoma” which practically translates to ”small bite to eat” is anything but small!

As you can see in the picture above, it Is a variety of fresh smoked meats (one of the things Agros is famous for), cheeses, fresh eggs from the barn, fresh jams, locally sourced vegetables, and bread, and delicious fried halloumi with fig that is to die for.

Other delicious things to eat at Mpakaliko tou Hapsi

Equally delicious on the menu is the ”pomilorotigania” which is essentially fried fresh tomatoes with eggs, onions, and goat’s halloumi cheese served with large chunks of freshly toasted bread.

The food menu is completed with three types of sandwiches, with three different types of bread. We got the ”agrotiko” – with smoked sausage, bacon, lountza, and halloumi cheese.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t try it because my IBS restricts me from eating most types of bread, and sesame seeds make me really ill! My filming crew devoured it though, so I think it deserves a mention!

Mpakaliko tou Hapsi has everything I LOVE about brunch in the villages of Cyprus. Classic, no-frills Cypriot breakfast, elevated in a rustic way – using organic, fresh, local produce. Bravo!

11. Visit the Tsolakis Rose Factory

You cannot visit Agros or neighboring Pelendri and skip a visit to the Tsolakis Rose Factory! In May the factory collects 8 tonnes of roses!

At the Rose factory, you can find a huge variety of products that are all rose-related! For example, rose-infused chocolates, heavenly smelling candles, rose liqueur and nectar, organic rosewater, jams, wine, vinegar, and a complete organic skincare line!

The Tsolakis family, chose the rich-soil region of Agros, to plant its famous roses. Remaining faithful to tradition and to the preservation of nature, they cultivate the ”Rosa Damascena” rose in Agros Cyprus, for 70 years.

As a result, they are experts at creating the purest rose products for wellness and daily care; using their two well-established products: organic rosewater and the rare rose essential oil.

12. Agros cyprus rose festival

It is May in Agros and Mother Nature is orchestrating her symphony. It is finally time for the annual Agros Cyprus rose festival and everyone is eager to get started! The buds of the Rose of Damascus have not yet opened completely, and they are finally ready for harvesting!

The rose festival kicks off at dawn because the thousands of delicate petals must be picked before the sun heats them up, causing them to lose their strong fragrance!

For one kilo of rose petals, 400 – 500 roses have to be picked, and Harvesting lasts between 20 and 25 days. At the Tsolakis plantation, roughly between 30,000 and 50,000 roses are hand-picked per day. The roses have to be placed in the cauldron for distillation as soon as possible.

Harvesting has the sweetness of a festival, where friends are present, and where acquaintances and strangers are welcome. If you are at Agros in May, you can take an active part in the Agros Cyprus rose festival, by harvesting roses – where you will also find me! I can’t wait for this experience! At the annual Rose Festival, there are a whole host of activities to enjoy, whether you want to indulge in an earthy hands-on experience, wish to try some local produce, or just be an observer to the festivities!

What can someone do in the Agros Cyprus Rose Festival?

The festival usually starts with an early morning rose collection session, followed by a kickoff ceremony and cultural event dedicated to roses.

There are plenty of other festivities to entertain the crowds, like traditional dancing, folk music, food competitions, and more.

The festival usually takes place in May – the last one was (May 11th -12th and 18th -19th). Unfortunately, the rose festival in 2020 was canceled due to Covid, but here is hoping 2021 will be a better year! Stay up to date with the festival here for new dates and news.

13. Take a moments of peace at Panayia Eleousa Church

Panayia Eleousa is located in the center of the village so you will definitely come across it when you are walking around! It is an impressive and large church, that can fit as many as 1500 worshipers.

Built with local stone on the surface of its outer walls, the temple was constructed in 1909 on the ruins of the Agros monastery. The altar is the same as the one in the original temple of the monastery, and the iconostasis is wooden and engraved.

The icon of Panayia Eleousa was painted, according to religious sources, by Apostle Luke. The chapel next to the church was built in 1990, and the icon is kept safe inside it. There are also other items saved there, such as a part of the monastery’s original altar, the icon of Christ, holy books, and more.

On the 21st of November, the church of Panayia Eleousa is celebrated, and the church receives thousands of believers through its doors.

14. Relax with a coffee and some cured meats at Kafkalias

Since 1978, this family-run business produces unique smoked meats with respect to tradition along with the passion and experience conveyed through generations.

Along with a plethora of delicious meats, you can also find ‘’Tsamarella’’, which is distinguished by Slowfood as Presidium – a title given to products that are unique, invaluable, and tend to disappear.

All of the smoked meats are free from conservatives and have won many awards such as ”Gastronomos” in 2017 for the delicious Lountza and ”Best Cyprus Product” in 2011 for the Tsamarella. You can buy to eat on the spot or vacuum seal to take home – and enjoy with a glass of Cyprus red wine, ouzo, or other drink! Personally, I devoured my weight in the snacks- i am practically obsessed with the Hiromeri!

15. Explore nature at Kato Milos nature trail

The starting point of this nature trail that is 6km long is near the impressive Rodon Hotel in Agros. To hike the entire trail you will need approximately 2 hours, so make sure you take water and wear a hat during the summer months!

You can observe beautiful nature including cherry and pear trees, as well as vineyards and rose plantations.

16. Try the best sweets and marmalades in the village

At Niki’s you will find the most extensive variety of freshly made jams and traditional spoon sweets – and each one is more delicious than the other!

Mrs. Niki, a vibrant, energetic woman, and her shop are situated just a few meters from the rose factory. Her business is certified with ISO 22000 and has been going strong for the past 30 years!

In 2004, the company made its first export order to Australia. Today the company exports its products to more than 6 countries including England, Australia, the USA, France, Japan, and Egypt.

It produces soutziouko, spoon sweets, and marmalade, as well as sweets and jam with no sugar – suitable for diabetics, and a plethora of other delicious Cypriot items!

Spoon Sweets: Spoon sweets are preserved fruit and vegetables over a long period of time in syrup, and they are a traditional Greek and Cypriot sweet loved by many generations! Served with coffee, or as dessert, there is a huge variety to choose from! Niki’s sweets produce 20 types of spoon sweets, such as orange, apricot, watermelon, rose, and fig, and some peculiar tastes like aubergine, pumpkin, walnut, and my personal favorite; bergamot!

Soutziouko: One of Cyprus’s most significant traditional sweets! Soutzioukos is made with grape juice, whole wheat flour, and rosewater. Once the mixture is cooked, a string of walnuts or almonds is dipped into it. Each layer dries and the dipping procedure lasts for five to six days. Seriously unique and delicious!

17. Watch the sunset at the nearby Agridia Dam

The beauty of the natural scenery of Agridia is enhanced by the water dam which was built in 1983. The dam is only 3km from Agros and 9km from Pelendri and it is located between hills with sparse wild vegetation.

Ampelikos Traditional Agrohotel

Oinou Strata offers the option of a luxurious and relaxing stay in Vouni, one of the biggest wine-villages of the mountainous Limassol and maybe one of the best agrotourism destinations in Cyprus!

There are plenty of things to do and see in the beautiful village of Vouni, so make sure you check them out!

The village is small, and Oinou Strata is located right in the center of it! You are only 1-2 minutes walks from the villages square, 2 taverns, a cafe, and a public parking area.

Oinou Strata – Get to know the Hotel

At the adults-only Oinou Strata, luxury and comfort are combined with absolute harmony. It is no wonder that this is the winner of the Luxury Lifestyle Awards 2020.

In this luxurious hotel of only 3 suites, everything is perfect – from china on the table, to the beds, Jacuzzi, and wine bar! I practically cried when I had to leave!

There is a beautiful entrance to Oinou strata– which perfectly ties in with the village architecture and style! A cute little patio outside, and a gorgeous wine bar and cellar that is open daily until 7 pm.

Can I park a car at Oinou Strata – Adults Only?

Parking in the village of Vouni is not the easiest of tasks. The village you see, – as quaint as it is – has narrow streets!

Luckily, there is spacious public parking just minutes from the hotel! Make sure you check out the map attacked, so you do not miss it.

There are three suites to choose from: The Shiraz Suite, The Champagne Suite, and the Merlot Suite. Yeap, this adults only hotel only offers 3 suites – so be sure to book FAST!

The rooms are impossibly perfect – like, I need to speak to this interior designer! Huge in size, luxe, classy and fabulous! I stayed in the Shiraz Suite which is situated at the bottom of the complex, right next to the wine cellar.

The beds in all three suites are amazing and so comfortable. The thick mattress, plush pillows, and soft linen provide such an excellent night’s sleep – and this is so important when you wanna spoil yourself! And I’m guessing this is one of the reasons you are looking into adults-only hotels in Cyprus – right?

In the room – which is as big as a 2 bedroom flat – there is also a dining area, with a proper dining table and 4-6 chairs, that is as grand and luxurious as an old Victorian mansion. The Jacuzzi with body treatment scrubs is probably my favorite feature of course – as it is big enough for two, even though I thoroughly enjoyed a glass of wine and a long soak by myself haha!

There is also a living room with a proper fireplace and Led Tv, a private veranda, and a huge bathroom with a jacuzzi and a separate shower.

As mentioned above, there are two more suites available for rent – the Merlot Suite and the Champagne Suite.

The Merlot Suite also includes a jacuzzi and all the features of the Shiraz suite – just a different decor. Furthermore, the Champagne suite does not have a jacuzzi but holds all the same features.

What are the check-in and check-out times at Oinou Strata – Adults Only?

The check-in times in this hotel are not the best in my opinion, but not unheard of in other adults-only hotels in Cyprus! I personally feel I deserve a full 24 hrs in my room (12 pm to 12 pm the next day). Alas, the check-in at Oinou Strata is from 2:30 PM, and check-out is at 11:30 AM.

What kind of breakfast is served at Oinou Strata – Adults Only?

The breakfast at Oinou Strata is a serious and elaborate affair! It is, of course, breakfast in bed, and by that, I mean that there is no breakfast area or anything of the sort. Instead, every morning, a huge spread of continental breakfast goodies will be waiting for you in your fridge inside the room, or delivered to your door 🙂

Location: Kalopanayiotis Village, Nicosia

Located a few meters east of the monastery of St. John the Illuminator (which belongs on Unesco’s Heritage Site list) the stunning chapel of Panayia Theoskepasti , is almost entirely hidden by a 700 old tree. Ancient stories claim that the tree grew this way overnight, to protect the village’s residents from intruders during a brutal war. Residents hid their women and children inside the chapel, and the tree kept them safe from harm, Tradition insists that bad things will happen to anyone who dares to cut even a twig of the tree!

The famous landmark of the statue of the Cypriot mother or ”mana statue” is really pretty and unique! The statue is situated on a hill above the village of Palaichori in the Troodos mountain area. The surrounding forest area is gorgeous, and there is a bench halfway for rest and views of the entire village. This spot will reward you with the best viewpoint of the village – ideal for photographs, panoramic views, and drone shots!

To get to the top, you have to walk around 150 uphill steps to get there – but that only takes around 10 minutes!

You would think it is SO easy to rent a bike and ride it through the picturesque villages and mountains of Cyprus. Right? WRONG! There are none in sight – The Cypriot Government needs to seriously up their game! Thankfully for me, Activate Cyprus came to the rescue! This company has tons of bicycles for hire, but they also organize bike tours and adventure events too! Their specialized field is the organization of events for several Outdoors sports such as Road Cycling, Mountain biking, Running, Triathlon, Hiking, etc.

The image I had in my head (me sailing through looking as cute as a button) all went terribly wrong! I had the hardest time trying to ride through the narrow cobbled streets (I was screaming, people were laughing) but once I got the hang of it – it was so awesome!

Learn How to make Halloumi Cheese

Location: Choirokitia Village – at the Basket Weaving Museum

This is a workshop and indulgent brunch in one! Here, you can learn how to make halloumi cheese, and unless you have been living under a rock somewhere, you KNOW halloumi is the EPITOME of deliciousness and an authentic Cypriot delicacy!

In Petro’s courtyard, the wood-fired oven brings out steamed bread and traditional delicacies, and in its kitchen, fresh anari and hot halloumi drive the visitors crazy. His excellent brunch is completed with fresh produce such as eggs and vegetables from his yard and farm.

Watch a silversmith at work

Location: Lefkara Village

Have you ever seen a man carve a pine cone or pomegranate out of silver? You should! And quite frankly, you simply haven’t been to Lefkara Cyprus, or done a Cyprus tour unless you visited Mr. Mihalakis! He is the ”last of the Mohicans” one of the only old silversmiths, who still make the traditional “kapnistomerecha”.

His hammer, loud voice, and laughter can be heard from afar! Mihalakis Christou is incredible, and while he lovingly works on a sheet of silver, transforming it into a pine cone, apple, or pear, he talks. And his stories are fascinating like the man himself. He is endearing, captivating, fascinating! Hurry up and visit him, and you would be glad you did!

Discover the art of Lefkaritika Lace

Lefkaritika lace designs are known around the world – and their birthplace is Cyprus, and in particular Lefkara Village. ”What are lefkaritika?” Lefkaritika or Lefkara Lace is a handmade lace from Pano Lefkara Cyprus. Notable characteristics are the hemstitch; satin stitch fillings, needlepoint edgings, white, brown, ecru colors, and geometric intricate patterns

So to see the REAL lefkaritika, you really should visit the village, and Rouvis Lace and Silver. This is the only village shop that sells 100% authentic Lefkaritika and it is of course under the auspices of the EU. Mihalis Rouvis, an embroidery designer, his wife Stavroula, and their son Dimosthenis pride themselves on their authenticity and quality! They are lovely people who will gladly show you their huge collection of designs, and explain everything about their history!

Become a Beekeeper for the day

Fascinated or intrigued by bees, and nature? Or maybe you simply love honey? I was seriously blown away by everything i learned here and I now have an admiration for bee colonies and everything about their ecosystem. Who knew bees were so clever?! Like clever enough to know when it is time to dethrone their own Queen – clever enough to ”prep” a baby into a new Queen and so much more! Fascinating stuff, at Ecophysis in the nearby village of Vavla – utterly fascinating.

You can wear a suit and become a beekeeper for the day, or choose one of the other experiences on offer at Ecophysis – like hiking and collection of wild herbs, candle making workshop, and more!

This family has turned a 300-year-old multi-level mansion into a wonderful museum full of old real-life stories and traditions. I’ve never seen such a museum in Cyprus -each room takes you back to generations past – and the accuracy is immaculate. You walk through an incredible garden filled with orange, lemon, and olive trees, as well as flowers of every kind. It is stunning! People interested in getting a virtual look into how Cypriot homes looked like in the past, then this is great for you!

Memories and images of Kato Drys and its people brought to life in a collection of agricultural, livestock, and apian tools, furniture, and general household items. A highlight is the beautiful collection of lace and embroidery dating back to the 1880s. In this gorgeous little shop right in the center of Kato Drys Village, you’ll find Mrs. Lygia. She makes her own ”Tremithopites” – and if you ask nicely, she’ll teach you how to make them too! Tremithopites are crunchy, round-shaped pies, made with terebinth berries, raisins, flour, water, and oil.

Additionally, her shop ”Madratzi tis Giagias” is filled with traditional handmade goodies – like rose water, cinnamon water, spoon sweets, and more from Lygia’s magical hands and her selected partners too. You absolutely MUST try her almost spoon sweet – it is to die for! Madratzi Tis Giagias is a big slice of Cypriot hospitality, culture, and tradition!

Trozena Bridge

Location: Limassol District – the abandoned Trozena Village

If you fancy Cyprus tours with a touch of ”off the beaten path” – this is great!

Trozena bridge is a modern metallic bridge in the abandoned villages of Trozena and Gerovasa on the border of the Paphos and Limassol districts! It was built during the 20th century by the Royal Marines during the British rule of Cyprus. The Diarizos river flows underneath the bridge, (which is safe to cross and walk on by the way) and the area is surrounded by thick vegetation. It’s a fabulous spot for pictures (make sure you tag me in yours!)

Get a taste of ”Arkatena”

Location: Arkatena Fotinis – Omodos Village

Arkatena is a type of “koulouri”, a circular bread made with leaven using the foam produced from chickpea fermentation called Arktis. At Arkatena Fotinis, you will find a plethora of products all made with arkatena, that attract a plethora of visitors from all over Cyprus! Cookies and pastries as well as bread, and jams! Good quality coffees too( often difficult to find in rural Cyprus!) P.s The brunch is amazing too!

Discover Tzelefou Bridge – a medieveal stone bridge

Location: Paphos

Tzelefou Bridge is the largest and biggest medieval stone bridge in Cyprus! This Venetian bridge is built over the river of Diarizos, and it is located at an altitude of 440 meters deep within the forest of Paphos. It is therefore considered as one of the most magical places to see across the whole island as it was built on an area with rich vegetation within the deep forest.

Discover a church buried underwater at Fragma Kouris

Location – Ayios Nicolaos Church at Kouris Dam

Kouris is the largest dam of a network of 107 dams in Cyprus. This huge reservoir is 115 meters high and can hold 115,000,000 cubic meters of water! But the dam holds other wonders too – such as an abandoned church buried deep into its waters!

Ayios Nicolaos Church was part of the old Alassa Village. Nowadays, the abandoned church is almost fully submerged in water, and only visible when the water levels of Kouris Dam drop. During the winter, the church is completely buried in water – an amazing phenomenon!

Visit a winery that stores its wines in caves instead of cellars!

Location: Kathikas Village, Paphos

There are so many gorgeous wineries in Cyprus! But I’ll leave those for another post! What is special about Sterna Winery is its location – that is situated above ancient springs and 31 caves dating back over 3000 years – and its ”cellars”

You see, In ancient times, wines were kept to mature in dark caves instead of fridges, and at Sterna, one such cave is still used to store the wines! The darkness of the cave cellar and its isothermic conditions (15-16’C) maintained all year round, create the ideal conditions for aging the fine wines. You can visit the winery and cave, and test the wines too!

Village: Pegeia Village in Paphos – Akamas Peninsula

Avakas Gorge is in a single sentence, a breathtaking masterpiece of nature and a trekkers paradise! You will find it located at the start of the Akamas Peninsula just16km west of Pafos. Nature and trekking enthusiasts are in for a treat, in the hike, you’ll discover magnificent nature views, rivers, and incredibly rich flora and fauna. The hike lasts for about 45 minutes – but feel free to take your time! At the end, you’ll be rewarded with a dramatic canyon, with a raging stream and limestone cliffs up to 30m in height!

Visit a vineyard with incredible sunset views

Location: Pano Panayia Village- Paphos

There is something so magical about witnessing a summer sunset from the top of a hill overlooking mountains, forests, and hectare upon hectare of vineyards. And if you’ve got a glass of top-notch wine for company…well your Cyprus tours itinerary doesn’t get much better than that! You too can witness this at Vouni Panayia – an incredible winery in Paphos that boasts vineyards 1100 meters high at the top of the hill! Incredible wine, fresh halloumi, home-grown tomatoes, and sunset I will never forget. Truly magical stuff!

Discover Mouflon and exquisite wildlife at Stavros tis Psokas

Location: Paphos

”Stavros tis Psokas” is a part of the vast Paphos Forest, and absolutely excellent for camping, picnics, and wildlife enthusiasts. This incredibly dense forest is a place where wildlife thrives, particularly the endangered Agrino (Mouflon). This beautiful animal (that used to be the symbol on the Cyprus Lira before the Euro) is rather shy but you can catch glimpses of them galloping early in the morning and in the afternoon when it cools down!

The journey to Stavros tis Psokas from any direction is very beautiful. You will pass through beautiful forests, pines, and plane trees and enjoy the fresh air and landscape. Breathtaking nature and Cyprus’s most protected animal make for one hell of an addition to your Cyprus tours!

Bake bread, halloumi and anari cheese at Sofia’s Traditional House

Village: Letympou – Paphos

Sofia and Andreas in Letymbou will give you a warm welcome! They bake their own bread, halloumi, and anari cheese (a soft cheese) right in their large courtyard – and the fun part? You can observe the process and even be a part of it! I loved helping Sofia knead bread, make halloumi cheese, and work the wood fire oven, before indulging in a full-on Cypriot feast! You will be fed Scrumptious food that is prepared fresh on the wood fire oven in the courtyard. Cyprus tours goals, for sure!
