Finding a good clinic or doctor while abroad is not always easy and it is also very expensive. Lastly, medication brands that are well known to us in Europe, might not exist in Asia or the Americas – so you will have to make do with what is on offer locally. So be a clever traveler, and keep on reading for a quick and easy list for a medication travel bag.

Traveling safely has never been more important than now with the covid-19!! So be safe, be organised and stay healthy!

Personal experience with getting sick on holiday

In China

My first solo trip outside of Europe was in China. I developed a crazy skin rash (it must have been the dry heat and polluted air) but I was not prepared. Stupidly, I didn’t have antihistamines packed, or my Calamine lotion that instantly soothes my skin! I had to suffer for two days before I could find someone to understand what I was trying to explain and give me the correct treatment. Managed to buy antihistamines which of course were the drowsy kind! I spend the remainder of my holiday having to choose between itching like I had fleas or walking around like a zombie. Not my finest moment, I’ll agree! Lesson learned though!

In Thailand

A few years later, on a one-month journey through Thailand, I got food poisoning, a horrible IBS stomach attack and crashed my scooter into the Thai jungle. Guess who had packed all the essentials in her medication travel bag? THAT’S RIGHT, ME!

My boyfriend at the time (silly little man, honestly) made fun of my ”med kit” for days until he had a stomach bug and had to beg to use my meds for relief. I call that success! LOL.

Medication Travel Bag Step One – Evaluate and pack according to your trip

What you will pack will depend on your destination.

For example, if you are traveling to NYC or spending Christmas In London, chances are you will need a smaller medication travel bag. This is because city holidays are safer, and large cities like those, have far more accessible pharmacies and doctors.

But if you are exploring the jungles of Costa Rica, the Caribbean coasts of Belize or the Asian Wonders of Thailand? Well, that’s a whole different ball game! Such exotic destinations require you to have a mini pharmacy on you, at all times.

If you are interested in finding out some of the exotic diseases and vaccinations you might need, then look no further!

Flu and other essentials

Cold and flu medication – I am personally obsessed with Nurofen Cold and Flu – its the only type of cold and flu medication that doesn’t make me sleepy! Pack your favorite:)

Regular Ibuprofen for pain – Traveling can be tiring, and we are all prone to accidents. A persisting headache, a hangover or a bad fall of a scooter can really ruin your holiday if you don’t have the correct tools for pain soothing!

Fever medication – To ease the dreaded fever!

Immodium or other diarrhea medication– For destinations with suspicious food and water. These can be a real lifesaver, for all the obvious reasons!

Birth Control: Whether condoms, pills or both, you should always be prepared and keep your times regular.

Vitamins: A good multivitamin can be your best friend, especially with the time difference and diet change that holidays always ensure!

Medication travel bag – Jet Lag and travel sickness

Jet lag. There is nothing worse than jet lag. In fact, I hate it so much, that I wrote an entire article on how to avoid getting Jet lag! Hundreds of flights later, I have fine-tuned my tips and no longer get it, but these tablets are so helpful if you do!

Stomach bugs and food poisoning

Activated charcoal. If you pack ONE THING in your medicine travel bag, make sure this is it. Activated charcoal is my absolute holy grail when I travel – I refuse to go without it. Suffering from IBS? Food poisoning? Hangover? Bloated stomach? Diarrhea? Activated charcoal is the answer to ALL these problems!! Activated charcoal soaks up gas generating toxins thanks to its unique chemical structure and its suitable for vegans and vegetarians!

Probiotics: If you’re in a country that can do a number on your stomach (Asia especially) consider a probiotic. They don’t call it the Delhi belly for nothing guys! It will help protect your stomach, against internal and external factors too – like antibiotics.

Electrolytes for Dehydration –  Again, essential in places where you might have stomach issues. Vomiting and dehydration can make you extremely ill, and these provide some much-needed hydration back into your body!

Medication travel bag – Mosquito Bites and Cuts

Mosquito Cream or Spray – and the stronger, the better! Mosquitos will either eat you alive or pass you by- if you are part of the latter group then I envy you (and hate you a little bit too). I am forever attacked viciously by mosquitos, which swell up and itch like you wouldn’t even believe!

Anti- Itch Cream – For mosquito bites and small skin reactions. If heading to a mosquito prone destination, this is essential. Choose your favorite, Calamine lotion works quite well for me!

Antihistamine tablets for all types of allergic reactions – including mosquito bites that become swollen and itchy. Make sure you choose some that don’t make you drowsy (I react well to Claritin)

Band-aids: For blisters, shaving cuts and other random small issues that might be in need of a quick fix.

Antibacterial Gel: Essential in ANY travel bag. Disinfect your hands well and frequently – especially before you eat. You can also use the gel for minor cuts and abrasions!

Wound Cleaning: Alcohol or iodine swabs, gauze and medical tape. This is only essential if you are planning on taking off the beaten path routes away from modern civilization.

Female only medications

Yeast Infection Treatment: Go for a tablet instead of cream as it will be easier to carry. Your partner can also take the same pill so that’s killing two birds with one stone! (pun totally intended)

Urinary tract infection treatment: Specially designed to provide effective relief from the stinging and burning of cystitis.

Pack it all in

Tips to make your medication travel bag smaller

With the amount of money airlines are charging us to simply check in a bag, we all want to travel lighter, so we can travel cheaper too. This is why mastering the art of traveling with a carry-on is essential! Below, find some easy tips to make your medication travel bag smaller and lighter 🙂

• Choose a tablet over a gel or cream
• Take all pills out of their box and carry a tablet of each. You won’t need the entire contents of the box anyway 🙂
• Sachets take up less space than bottles!
• Pharmacies often have travel-sized cream equivalents – ask for them!

Why do I choose to travel light?

The most obvious reason is to cut the costs down! On my last trip to Amsterdam, Brussels, and Paris, I had an airline try to charge me 160 euros for a 20-kilo bag! I swear airline regulations and extra fees are getting more ridiculous by the minute. Personally, I refuse to pay such high fees for a stupid bag. I work way too hard on my money to throw it out the window.

So when I can, I choose a carry on bag. I will admit, It took years of traveling to make me able to pack light. I am one of those girls that like to have an outfit for every occasion- but when I traveled to Bali I realized that half my clothes stayed untouched in my suitcase! So on my next flight, I made a carry on packing list and traveled with a cabin bag!

General tips for packing a carry on that I follow

The No 1 rule is to find a way to minimize and reuse. Essential items only are a must, and planning your outfits ahead is crucial! Packing a carry on has also helped me minimize my use of plastic and travel responsibly and eco-friendly! Additionally, when you haven’t got the space, you tend to choose each item you pack carefully and only pack the things you will really need.

Keep reading for my tried and tested Carry on packing list

Clothes

The key is to pack clothes you can mix and match! I usually pack thin layers that i can take off and on, and they take up less space than bulky items! Of course, your list will vary greatly depending on the climate of your destination.

Carry on packing list – Summer

Your summer carry on packing list will also change depending on the destination. Are you traveling somewhere exotic or in Europe? And lastly, is the country Muslim? Being respectful to a countries customs is vital, and the clothes you will pack will be different for sure! My packing list for Jordan which is a Muslim country was entirely different from my Thailand packing list even though I traveled to both countries in July of different years.

In general though, for summer I always a pair of comfortable leggings that I travel with. Then I think of mix and match items I can combine. 3x pairs of shorts, 2x long maxi skirts, and some simple tops in colors of white, black, cream and grey are fab. As for going out outfits, I usually go with 1-2 summer dresses that I can dress up with heels or down with sandals! Pack a light cardigan you can wear on the plane (long-haul flights especially) and keep with you for those chillier summer evenings!

Summer  Tip: A multiuse sarong or pashmina will be a lifesaver! Wear it at the beach, or to cover up for temple/church/mosque visits! 

Beachwear. Then, of course, you have beachwear. I always pack mix and match bikinis, and 1 pair of flip flops. I also never pack towels. Good hotels actually provide beach towels, but if not, I buy one from a souvenir shop when I land!

Hair

I generally like to keep my hair simple, especially on holiday! I have naturally wavy hair, so I wear the beach hair look and let my hair air dry! If your hair is not as easy to manage, choose one piece of hair appliance you can do many things with like this one from Remington, that is infused with Moroccan oil or my personal favorite – the triple wave barrel! The barrel created the most mermaid style hair ever, I’m in love with it!

Hair Tip: Summer often means humidity, so I always pack a few headbands, elastic bands and hair grips for the times my hair is looking crazy. This is also an easy way to change and update any outfit! 

Carry on packing list – Winter

Traveling during winter makes your carry on packing list a little more difficult. After all, jumpers and boots take up lots of space! For years, I couldn’t manage it without a large suitcase but I have finally found the secret recipe! For starters, winter means one thing – layers. But not just any old layers. Thermals! Amazon came to the rescue when I went snowboarding in Bansko, and needed to pack a suitcase for ski and snowboarding. All the gear I found in Cyprus, cost an arm and a leg, and I was in need of thermals!

So I bought these thermal tops online, and have been using them ever since! Thermal tops are brilliant – they don’t take up space, are inexpensive, and keep you super warm in the cold! Layer a jumper on top, a thick scarf, gloves and your coat and you are good to go! Packing wise, I would suggest packing a few thermals, 2-3 jeans and jumpers, and some leggings to travel with.

Winter packing Tip: Wear your bulkiest items at the airport, and keep your coat, scarf, and gloves outside of your carry on. 

The best item to have when traveling and packing light

The best item is without a doubt a good quality backpack, which is a total lifesaver! A good backpack for starters will help you store a ridiculous amount of items outside of your carry on. It also the safest way to carry weight around (no more bad backs please!) Lastly, you can double it as a beach bag, city tour bag and everything in between. Winner!

Shoes

Shoes take up space, so here, you need to be frugal! For the summer, my carry on packing list consists of one pair of flip flops and one pair of nice flat sandals. Additionally, a pair of summer wedges in a nude/brown color will come in handy too, and you can combine them will all your outfits!

Carry on packing list – how will I fit all this in a cabin bag?

Its time I share with you my biggest secret….packing cubes! In all honesty, packing cubes are the best thing since sliced bread. I don’t know who came up with them, but I salute you! Packing cubes are the holy grail to anyone wishing to be neat and travel light. They keep your luggage organized, and protect your clothes and luggage from stains and wrinkles. They also help you fit more in your cabin bag so you can pack more in it! Lastly, say goodbye to living out of a messy suitcase on your travels! Just put the cubes inside the closet and drawers and avoid the clutter 🙂

These packing cubes are the best! They are made of durable High-Quality Nylon Fabric quality zippers and have a see-through mesh top. They come in a pack of 6 sizes and a variety of colors (i have the navy blue ones). I generally pack:

• 1 cube for toiletries
• A cube for underwear./socks/bikinis
• 1 cube for trousers, skirts dresses

• 1 cube for extras or electronics
• I carry the smallest one with me at the airport 🙂

Electronics

A good international travel adapter will be your saving grace and help minimize space. On this one adapter, you can charge any device, in any socket in the world, so there is no need for extras! Winner! Additionally, you will need your phone charger and possibly a power bank to charge on the go! You can carry a kindle or a camera with you in your backpack! Kindles are great and lightweight, and you can download lots of books without carrying a single one!

Carry on packing list – Toiletries

Girls (and boys) will understand my pain. We use so.much.stuff! It’s crazy! So if you are a girl that loves her skincare, lotions and potions keep reading! I will show you my secret tips about incorporating ALL your skincare and lotions in your carry on packing list!

Travel bottles. I have personally been raving about those to anyone who would listen for the past year! You can get these types of bottles everywhere, and I have tonnes of them! But many of them leak, and after a while, I have no recollection of what is inside each bottle! That’s why I am so in love with these ones! They come in a pack of 8 bottles in a clear PVC bag. They are made of soft silicone, are 100% leak-proof, waterproof and squeezable! The best thing about them though is that these travel containers have an ID window with 6 options to change the text that shows. Solid shampoo and conditioner (unisex) Unless you are comfortable using the shampoo and conditioner your hotel will provide (and I am really not), you will need a shampoo and conditioner. I really wish I made those mature thoughts when I was 19 and I traveled to Dubai! Thinking back at it now, I remember how my knee-length summer dresses and long blonde hair attracted huge attention!

So this time around, I was determined to get it right. No more epic travel fails (at least in fashion)

Though Jordan may technically be in be Asia (geographically), the Asian rules do not apply here!

How strict are the Muslim laws in Jordan?

Many blogs I read painted a very conservative, strict picture of Jordan.

But after visiting myself though, I realized that that is simply not the case!

Yes, I got masses of attention(and a few marriage proposals). But not because I dressed provocatively; simply because of how different I looked in comparison to the local women.

The attention and stares did get tiring, but I never once felt threatened, and no one ever created trouble for me, based on what I was wearing.

So without further ado, read on for the ideal packing guide! Tips for men are also included below!

What to wear in Jordan in the summer: Women                  

What To Definitely Pack

• Maxi skirts with a tank top, crop top, or t-shirt
• Maxi dresses. Worn with sandals, trainers, or heels, these are a total lifesaver!
• Leggings. You can layer those under a dress too.
• Long Summer trousers of thin, breathable material.
• Scarves or pashminas. These can be used in a multitude of ways; like covering up arms and hair in a flash when needed, or in case of sudden rain.
• Trainers –or hiking shoes. These are absolutely vital for visiting Petra or Jerash as you will be walking and hiking a lot! To make sure you don’t miss out on the best things to do in Jordan, ready my guide!
• Flat Sandals or flip flops. I personally recommend sandals for better comfort during walking! There is a lot of walking!
• Definitely a small, practical handbag or a trusted backpack like my favorite one from Vans!
• A hat to protect from the sun (and hide hair if needed)
• An old bikini of a dark color to swim in the Dead Sea and enjoy the mud baths – anything light will likely be ruined from the mud and the salt (the Dead Sea has almost 10 times the saltiness of the sea)

What NOT to Pack

• Very short Shorts. Your daisy dukes can stay home!
• Very Short skirts
• Cleavage – Nooooo Cleavage!
• Long Jeans – Avoid them simply because they are so uncomfortable in the heat!
• See-through Clothing
• Hair: Most Locals tend to cover their hair and arms, but visitors don’t need to be too prudent about that. I didn’t cover my hair – only at times when I wanted to visit a mosque or a church. Carrying a light pashmina, or headscarf is ideal so you can cover up quickly at a moment’s notice.  

ADDITIONALLY RECOMMENDED PACKING ITEMS

• A good pair of Sunglasses
• Universal Travel Adapter 
• Mosquito repellant bracelets that are natural, DEET-free, and safe for children too!
• Activated charcoal – a complete lifesaver!!  – Sorts out bloated tummies, food allergy stomach problems, upset stomach from food or water, and many more.  I have IBS, and lactose intolerance and the smallest thing can make me ill –so  I never travel without it and all my travel companions end up using it too! You can find it from your local chemist!
• Piz Buin Allergy Sun lotion.  Perfect for sensitive skin, prickly heat, and the dry desert sun! I had been suffering from a type of sun allergy for years, and finding this allergy lotion literally saved me! If you too, experience redness and severe itching after sun exposure, try this brand and write a comment below! 
• Passport Holder for your visa, vaccinations, and passport, as well as hotel reservations or car-hire papers)
• A small makeup bag – pay special attention to oil-free primers and products to keep the shine away- and keep the rest of your makeup (if you wear any) natural.
• Hair accessories and chunky jewelry for that dessert boho-chic look!

A few extra tips for women and men

1. Replace your disposables with reusable items.

For example, cotton rounds, cotton swabs, and tissues. We use trillions of them! I swapped to reusables 2 years ago, and haven’t looked back since!

In particular, I picked up swabs for my ears, pointy ones for my make-up, cotton rounds for skincare, and even tissues.

2. Get a portable ashtray

3. Carry a water bottle and straw

A simple reusable cup and metal straw are the best, and contribute a lot to the solution; trust me!

This filter bottle is great as it reduces chlorine and micro-particles. You can fill it up from any tap, or at your hotel to avoid buying a million plastic bottles when you travel.

100,000 marine creatures and 1 million sea birds die from plastic entanglement in a year.

Personally, I have tried paper straws and pasta straws too, but I really hate them! This stainless steel straw set comes with a handy pouch, and a brush to clean too!

4. Switch to shampoo and conditioner bars

There is no need to carry plastic bottles that you will later throw away. Not when you can get top-quality shampoo and conditioner in a bar!

This shampoo and conditioner set smells like heavenly lemon and eucalyptus, and don’t laugh, but mosquitos hate the smell of lemon so this is a WIN for me!

What To wear in Jordan – Men Edition

Men are so lucky !! No one will ever call you inappropriate, too sexy, or disrespectful during your travels… But that’s a subject for a different blog post!

For now, here is what to wear for Jordan:

• Jeans for nights out in New Amman.
• Chino trousers
• ¾ length trousers of any kind (doesn’t have to be dressy)
• T-shirts – 1-2 per day. You will be walking a lot and sweating a lot!
• A Scarf – Jordanian men often wear them. They are great to protect hair and scalp from the sun too! You can buy one locally 🙂
• Trainers or hiking boots and flip flops
• Bathing suit for the Dead Sea – one of a dark color to avoid damage from the Dead Sea Mud.
• Backpack – so you can finally stop stealing all our handbag space!

Need I say more? This country is so gorgeous you will be taking an insane amount of pictures. Make sure you take plenty of swimsuit options too! My advice would be to pack smart swimwear, that causes no funny tan lines! That cut out monokini might look cute…if you like the zebra look!

5. Thailand Packing List – Floaty Maxi Dresses (women).

The perfect evening wear for Thailand is the almighty maxi dress.

Maxis dresses are versatile, light, airy and totally elegant. Also, cute little skirts and airy tops are your second go-to nightwear!

You don’t need to pack jeans, long trousers, or skin-tight party dresses!

6. Light shirts and t-shirts and 3/4 length trousers (Men)

7. Flip flops and flat sandals – No heels! (women)

8. Trainers/hiking shoes

9. Thailand Packing List – Take Minimal Jewelry

Leave the excessive stuff at home! Real and expensive jewelry should also be avoided at risk of theft from yourself or the hotel. You may also lose things whilst snorkeling, diving, etc. So do take a minimal amount and keep it all safe in this smart, travel jewelry box!

10. Waterproof Jacket or a cardigan

Because when it rains, it pours! Hard and fast, the Thai tropical rain will have you drenched and shivering in 0.5 seconds. The key here is to pack from rain protection and not for cold, as even when it’s raining, its warm.

Ideally, your clothes should help protect you from the elements, keep you dry and keep the cold out.

So without further ado, let me show you exactly what you need, in my ultimate ski trip packing list!

Why you need a ski trip packing list

Did you Book the ski trip of a lifetime? Are you ready to hit the slopes, and conquer the snowy mountains?

Fantastic; but first you need to pack!

While summer sports like surfing don’t include much more than a swimsuit and a surfboard… ski and snowboarding require a much larger packing list that goes far beyond the need to feel and look good.

The often sub-zero temperatures, snow, and strong cold winds mean you do not only need to dress warmly.

You need to dress right– to avoid injuries, have optimal performance on the slopes, and avoid losing all fingers and toes up there! 

Ski Trip Packing List

1. Thermal Top

Look for Synthetic base layers which are largely made from polyester and polyester blends. 

These base layers will keep the wearer warm down to about -8 to -10 degrees when worn in combination with ski outerwear.

Polyester base layers are quick-drying, lightweight, and keep away moisture from the skin to keep you dry.

This one is pretty great comes in a few colors and it’s inexpensive too!

2. Thermal Bottoms

Freezing cold toes is just not the one is it!

Trust me, while you might be tempted to simply layer leggings, you are going to swiftly regret that decision when you are 20 minutes in a ski ride in -10 degrees!

These thermal bottoms are in my wardrobe essentials since my Bansko snowboard trip and I’m glad I made the purchase!

They are the ideal base layer under anything, from ski pants to jeans and tracksuits too.

3. Ski socks

Avoid layering 2-3 pairs of athletic socks!  Those will still get wet and will give you painful blisters!

Instead, choose one pair of wool or acrylic socks and you will not regret the purchase!

Money-Saving tip: Proper Ski socks are expensive! So buy one pair, and then layer normal thermal socks underneath to keep the ski socks clean and double the effect and warmth.

Keeping toes warm and dry is probably the most important part of packing for winter trips!

Very happy with these ones, and they come at a great price!

4. Ski Trousers

If you are a fan of having a wet bum, keep scrolling.

I, on the other hand, have 0 intentions of walking around in wet trousers!

A pair of waterproof ski trousers will cover your boots, keep you warm and dry!

Choose wisely, you will be reusing these a lot!

I cannot stress enough how important having a pair of ski trousers is, or how it will greatly benefit your trip!

5. Ski Jacket

A ski suit is made from wind- and water-resistant or waterproof fabric, and has a non-removable liner made of nylon, silk, cotton, or taffeta.

It is an absolute lifesaver on the slopes!

A good ski jacket will be equipped with lots of hidden pockets to keep all your valuables safe and dry! (For example your ski pass card, phone, power bank, camera, etc)

6. Ski Gloves

A good pair of waterproof ski gloves with specialized grip surfaces is a must. 

Normal gloves just won’t do! There’s nothing worse than wet, freezing cold hands, and once your body heat drops past a certain point, it gets very painful!

These ski gloves are the best purchase I made by far, couldn’t have survived my trip without them.

7. Goggles or Ski Mask

Ski goggles are an important piece of kit.

They protect your eyes from the elements, such as snow, wind, and harmful UV rays, while improving your vision so that you get to see the mountain as well as possible.

On clear, sunny days, (or for beginners) you can wear sunglasses instead.

Having said that, beginners fall down a lot whilst learning so you run the risk of losing or breaking your sunglasses.

Ski goggles have a firm elastic band that never slips – and if you are renting a helmet, they can be attached to the helmet for extra protection.

8. A warm wool hat or ear protector

Keeps your head and ears warm, and adds another layer of protection underneath the helmet.

9. Walking Shoes

You need a pair of waterproof shoes that have enough traction underneath to safely walk in the snow.

You will not wear these shoes whilst skiing or snowboarding, but you will wear them everywhere else!

They are your ”every day and every night” type of shoe, and you can use them for trekking and other activities too.

10. Balaclava or neck warmer.

A neck warmer is otherwise known as a neck gaiter or neck tube. It is perfect for keeping your neck and lower face warm and stopping the snow from going down the collar of your ski jacket.

A balaclava is a form of cloth headgear designed to expose only part of the face. Usually, only the eyes, mouth, and nose, or just the front of the face are unprotected.

A lot of experienced skiers and snowboard enthusiasts choose those, as it protects them from the cold wind when they are racing down the slopes.

11. A Good Backpack

A good backpack is necessary for every travel scenario! I take mine everywhere, including the airport!

When skiing or snowboarding, it’s great to have so you can carry all your essentials every day. Your hands will be busy carrying your gear!

This particular backpack is water-resistant, spacious, and has a USB charging fort!

This exact ski trip packing list got me through the -10 temperatures in Bansko and made snowboarding so much more comfortable and easy!

The first time I snowboarded I had the completely wrong gear and I ended up getting pneumonia!

I can also still remember the feeling of the crusty, freezing wet clothes on my body!
