Italy Packing List – The Essentials

Portable charger

Nowadays, we rely so heavily on our phones – especially when we are abroad!

A portable charger ( power bank) will make sure you have enough battery to take photos and videos, transfer money online, research sights and restaurants and follow google maps – all day long!

Travel Adaptor

The power plugs and sockets are of types F and L. A good travel adaptor makes sure you can charge anything, anytime!

Water bottle – Plastic free

I am forever trying to advocate for responsible tourism and reduce my plastic use. After all, we only have one Earth!

Walking around in the heat will make you super thirsty, so I suggest a leak-proof, stainless steel bottle instead of buying plastic!

This particular one is suitable for hot and cold, is vacuum sealed, and has a lifetime guarantee. Winner!

Italy Packing List – Other Packing essentials

Umbrella

Pretty essential for those sudden bouts of rain and summer thunderstorms!

Packing Cubes

Glorious packing cubes, how I love thee! They are the key to traveling with a carry on luggage only.

packing cubes come in a set of different sizes so you can easily separate your clothes, shoes, toiletries, and electrical appliances. They help to keep you organized, pack more, and keep clothes wrinkle-free. Winner!

Accessory Essentials

Cover Up Pashmina

I say this all the time, and I’ll say it again. The item I ALWAYS pack and always use is a pashmina. The reason you need one is that you will be denied entry to numerous religious sites without it.

Entering such sites, without a cover-up is extremely rude to the culture and Italian Catholic religion. This pashmina is easy to pack, lightweight, and Upgrades any outfit instantly!

Click the image to check it out on Amazon

A hat or two

A hat in Italy serves two purposes! For starters, it will protect you from the scorching sun – and trust me, the sun in Italy does not mess about!

Secondly, you can choose a hat to serve as a fashion statement, and instantly transform any outfit so you can pack less! The choices are endless, but my favorite hats are fedora and berets.

This summer is all about cute bucket hats too!

Tia’s Tip: Choose a color that makes a stark contrast, either with your hair or your surroundings. Your pictures will pop!

Italy Packing List – Clothes and Shoes

Daytime Clothes

Summer Dresses

A cute power suit. It looks fantastic with flats and heels and can easily take you from day to night!

Lightweight Capri trousers

Mid-length shorts or leggings

Maxi Skirts

Flared Jeans

Tia's Tip: I love customising my outfits with different jewerly and accessories! Hairbands, earrings and necklaces are instant outfit transformers!

Evening Wear

I’m going to be honest here. I never end up wearing most of my evening wear!

Holidays never go according to plan, do they! More often than not, I am too busy having fun to care about going back to my hotel and getting dressed up for dinner.

So I slightly upgrade my daily wear outfits to take me from day to night without an issue! (and I carry a pashmina to instantly make my outfits look fancier too).

Nowadays, I take one beautiful piece of evening wear alone, and in Italy, you can go all out! You can choose anything, from a bodysuit to a skirt and a top or a pretty dress!

When it comes to heels, avoid stiletto heels. The cobbled streets are very difficult to walk on, and you’ll end up breaking your foot!

Chunky heels or wedges are far more appropriate, but not necessary either.

Shoes

The most important item in your Italy packing list should be what shoes to take! Because one thing is for sure; you’ll be doing a lot of walking!

In Rome and Venice, I walked for miles every day, to the point that my feet became swollen!

In Florence, the central part of the city is closed off to cars, so that too resulted in tons of walking.

So when it comes to shoes, go for comfort, and something you can combine with many outfits! My top choice of comfort shoes are:

Cities: My trusted trainers that I can walk for miles in! Personally, I don’t go for ”fancy sneakers”. Puma and Adidas make the best running shoes for my feet, so you will never see me travel without a pair.

Islands: Definitely, my Havaianas flip flops never hurt the arches of my feet or cause my feet to blister. You can find lots of colors here linked above!

Winter: Winter-wise, I bought the most comfortable boots from Sketchers this winter, that I wore to France and Amsterdam, and WOW.
Backpack or Sling bag

it goes without saying that your Italy Packing List needs a bag for your belongings! Usually, I love a good backpack, as I like to carry a lot on me.

Recently though, in Disneyland Paris, I wanted something small, light, and minimal, like this crossbody bag.

What impressed me the most with this one, is the fact it’s small but roomy, and even has space for credit cards and lots of zips!

Delicious Facts About Italian Foods – Pizza

Who doesn’t love pizza? And what better place to eat it, than its birthplace; Italy.

History: The first Italian pizza restaurant, Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba, began baking pizzas in 1738 in Naples, Italy.

The modern pizza was born in 1889, when pizzamaker Raffaele Esposito created the “Pizza Margherita” in honor of the Queen consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy.

Of course, pizza in Italy is entirely different than what we are eating in our hometowns. In Italy, you will find authentic pizza, as thin as a piece of paper!

The original Mozzarella is as authentic as you will find, and it’s so thin it cooks in less than 10 minutes! Utterly delicious crispy, thin-crust pizza topped with olive oil, garlic, basil, tomatoes, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese.

And not a dollop of ketchup in sight!

Tia’s Tip: Never ask for ketchup in Italy. No Italian in their right mind will serve you that, and you will be insulting them if you ask! If you do find ketchup, I suggest you walk out! That place will be a place for tourists, and tourists alone 🙂

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.tiadoestravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pinar-kucuk-Ae7jQFDTPk4-unsplash-1.jpg?resize=683%2C1024&ssl=1" alt="Traditional Italian Pizza.
Pasta

History: Noodles existed in China and Asia long before pasta appeared in the Mediterranean world! The legend says that Marco Polo brought pasta to Italy from China in 1271 and specifically, to Venice.

The name ”pasta” was invented from the pasty texture of the dough when it is first mixed 🙂

An iconic traditional Italian dish that deserves its fame. The type of pasta you will eat will vary significantly according to the location and region.

Each region has a local specialty, and each as delicious as the next! In Rome, the Pasta a la Carbonara is incredible. No mushrooms, cream or bacon (as we eat in our home cities) will be found here!

History: The humble potato Gnocchi originates in Northern Italy, where the colder climate was better for growing potatoes than grain.

This dish dates back to the 17th century after Spanish explorers brought potatoes from South America and introduced them to Italian kitchens.

Gnocchi is a dumpling dish, that is made out of potatoes and flour. In Italy, you will find Gnocchi served as a portion of pasta, with sauce and fresh parmesan on top.

Every region in Italy, especially in the north, has its own gnocchi variation! Really, really yummy and a great dish for kids who like potatoes!

History: The story of risotto began thousands of years ago, specifically in the 14th century B.C., when the Arabs brought rice to Sicily and Spain during their rule.

Italy became the ideal place to grow short-grain rice due to its humid weather and flat land. Soon after, rice became the main part of Italian food culture. Now, Italy is the largest rice-producing country in Europe!

Another Italian classic, that also originates from Northern Italy specifically from Milan. Risotto is made of rice, wine, broth, butter, and parmesan cheese, and is topped with either seafood, mushrooms or pumpkin. Delicious!

Pannetone

History: Pannetone has two history legends behind it! Both equally fascinating and deserving a spot in the facts about Italian foods. Both legends include a baker named Toni and you can read both here

Panettone is an Italian type of sweet bread originally from Milan. It is a Christmas and New Year favorite but you can find it in Italy throughout the entire year. This dome-shaped cake that has been leavened with yeast, has a light and airy texture, with a rich and buttery taste, and is not very sweet.

As a filling, anything goes. Traditionally, its filled with dried raisins, candied orange, and lemon peel, although there are dozens of other variations!

Panettone also keeps and transfers very well – so makes the perfect present to take back home! After all, its popularity is growing! Nowadays,10% of panettone is exported to France, Germany, the United States, Canada, Britain, and Spain.

Delicious Facts About Italian Foods -Arancini and Suppli

History: Arancini originated in Sicily when the Arabs ruled during the 10th century. The first documented form of arancini dates back to the 19th century.

They were sweet instead of savory (with spices, sugar and ricotta cheese). The ”New World” brought new exciting ingredients to Italy, like tomatoes!

Soon after, arancini took its current savory taste with ragu and tomatoes.

Crisp and golden brown stuffed rice balls or as I like to call them, little balls of heaven! The Arancini are small balls of rice, coated in breadcrumbs and fried at the end.

Again, arancini fillings vary from region to region! Some examples include the arancini con ragù (containing tomato sauce, rice, and mozzarella), arancini con burro (made with creamy béchamel sauce), arancini con fungi (mushrooms) and arancini con melanzane. (eggplant).

These rice balls, appear in bars, restaurants, and market stalls all over Italy! Supplì is a Roman specialty you can find in pizzerias and as antipasti.

They are oblong in shape, and contain only rice, tomato sauce, and a large piece of mozzarella in the middle. One of my favorite things to eat in Italy, for sure!

Lasagne

History: Shock and horror, Lasagne was NOT invented in Italy! That’s right! Technically, Italy is not the birthplace of this dish, as it is traced back to Ancient Greece! The name Lasagna comes from the Greek word ‘Laganon’; the first known form of pasta.

What’s even more fascinating though, is that the name traces back to Ancient Greece, the first recipe to Britain, and generations of perfecting the dish to Italy!

Everyone has eaten lasagne from time to time but the original method comes from Naples. Lasagne is made by baking sheets of lasagne pasta.

You then layer the pasta layered with cheese, ground meat, and vegetables. Lastly, you top with different varieties of sauces, such as the ragù, bechamel or tomato sauce.

Hearty, creamy, and utterly delicious.

Delicious Facts About Italian Foods – Ossobuco (Veal)

History: The Italian dish originated from the city of Milan in the late 19th century. As with arancini, the dish evolved with time, specifically when the ”New World” ingredients came to Italy.

The older version, ossobuco in bianco, is flavored with cinnamon, bay leaf, and gremolata. Tomatoes and carrots like the one today did not exist back then!

Ossobuco is made with slowly braised veal. The dish is cooked in white wine, seasonal vegetables and ”gremolata”, a garlic and lemon sauce.

Eat with crusty Italian bread, to soak up all the delicious marrow of the veal. Drool!

Proschutto and Aperitivo

History: The history of this cured ham that is also one of the best-known Italian foods stretches back to pre-Roman times.

It was in 100 BC that Cato the “Censor” first mentioned the extraordinary flavor of the air-cured ham made around the town of Parma in Italy! The hams legs were left to dry, greased with a little oil and could age without spoiling.

You cannot visit Italy and miss this local favorite! Prosciutto is dry-cured ham, served uncooked (Crudo) or cooked (Cotto) and cut in thin slices.

Prosciutto Crudo is light, savory and airy, and is a staple in every Italian table. Served in sandwiches, on top of pizza or pasta, or wrapped around slices of cheese or melon. But more importantly, it also serves as part of Aperitivo.

Aperitivo in Italy is a religion; a kind of ”pre-dinner” affair with drinks and food ranging from a plate of snacks to a full-on buffet. Cured meats, fresh mozzarella, olives or cold pasta dishes. A piece of authentic Italian culture, and an experience you cannot miss.

Tia’s Tip: Aperitivo is NOT dinner. Eat a small amount of food only, or you will get stared at- it’s considered rude! When you come across an aperitivo buffet, remember the general rule for good etiquette. One drink equals one plate of food.

Delicious Facts About Italian Foods -Buffalo Mozzarella

History: The origin and history is again, long but fascinating and you can read it here in full detail

Oooohhh I’m drooling as I write this! Buffalo Mozzarella is not like regular mozzarella, and the authentic one in Italy is out of this world!

Buffalo Mozzarella is made from the milk of the water buffalo. It is creamier, softer, and far more flavorful than the cow-milk stuff.

You can eat it on its own, on top of Bruchetta, salad, pizza and everything in between. Try it, trust me!

Italian Gelato

History: Ice-cream was first developed in China, and not in Italy! But that version had no milk or cream in it (basically Sorbet). And in fact, many countries used the same practice for their own sorbet for hundreds of years.

When milk and cream were introduced in the 18th century, the Neapolitans in Italy created the first gelato!

You can’t possibly visit Italy without a scoop (possibly 10, who are we kidding!), of smooth, creamy gelato. The differences between Italian gelato and ice cream make its flavor and texture so different!

Gelato is made with milk, whereas ice cream is made with cream. The milk in the gelato gives it a much softer, smoother texture and intense flavor! Pistachio is an Italian favorite, which I personally don’t like so I stick to everything else.

I’ve visited Italy 6 times now, so it’s safe to say I’ve had every flavor under the sun!
Why you should visit Italy

First things first, Italy is historical, alluring, romantic, breathtaking! By far my favorite European destination (apart from of course my homeland of Greece and Cyprus, coz a girl needs to stay true to her roots you know!)

Geographical position and capital

Italy is a Mediterranean country located in southern Europe and home to over 60 million people. It is bordered in the north by France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia.

The capital of Italy is Rome, a destination of 3 million people and one I highly recommend you to visit (more on that below).

Italy is divided into 20 different regions, each with its own unique culture, dialect, customs, and cuisine so you’ll find a lot of differences between regions in the north and those in the south.

The most popular and visited region is the central Tuscany region. For more in-depth information about the regions in the country, see this map of Italy’s regions.

Things to know when traveling to Italy – Language

The official language is Italian of course, with many dialects in different regions – much as the dialects in the Greek language (Cretian, Cypriot, etc). In regards to English, you will find people who don’t speak a word of it, and others who are fluent. My advice?

learn some Italian!

Italians are the type of people that love a trier. For example, when I first moved to Italy for a year, I couldn’t speak a word of Italian. People weren’t hostile at all but didn’t really go out of their way to help me either.

The minute I started speaking even a few words of Italian and putting sentences together ALLLL of that changed! They transformed into the most excitable, warm-hearted, helpful people I have ever met in all my travels!

Sweet little grandmas would hop off their bus earlier just to navigate me to my house, the whole neighborhood was there to help me find my way around the city, buy me an espresso, or stop to pet my dog. (This is a pet-friendly nation, my entire neighborhood owned a dog!)

Why I think its important to learn a bit of Italian

I knew I was in love with Italy right there and then! When I became one with the people, learned their language, listened to their stories and shared mine.

So YES, learn some Italian before you go. Check out the Most Common Italian Words and Phrases to learn before you travel!

After that, if you want to learn fluent Italian, The Duolingo app is pretty great, and free too! Italian is a beautiful language and the benefits far outweigh the 5 minutes a day you will be spending on the app!

Religion

The major religion in Italy is Roman Catholicism. This is not surprising, as Vatican City, located in the heart of Rome, is the hub of Roman Catholicism and where the Pope resides.

The Vatican City, the majestic St.Peter’s Basilica, and Castel D’Angelo in Rome are all great examples of the Italian faith and religion.

Customs – the Italian Culture

Italians are warm people, loud-mouthed and open-hearted to the max. In many ways, they are extremely similar to us Greeks and Cypriots!

They do everything with passion and gusto, and when an Italian has something to say- trust me, you will know about it! Italians are extremely close-knit with their families, grandparents stay close to their children and grandchildren, and many families live in the same houses, or buildings.

They laugh out loud, use their hands and arms a lot when they speak and are very outspoken in their opinions.

Lastly, the Italians and their rather formal society appreciate smiley people and kind manners. Therefore, when entering a shop, restaurant or bar, greet people with a ‘Buongiorno’ (good morning) or a ‘Buona sera‘ (good evening) and always say ”Gracie” (thank you).

Things to know when traveling to Italy – Cities and Islands to Visit

Charging Your Devices

In Italy, the power plugs and sockets are of type F and L. The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz. This basically means you’ll need an international adapter!

Things to know when traveling to Italy -Transportation

There are numerous transportation options in Italy. these of course, can differ drastically depending on WHERE you are planning to visit! For large cities, rest assured, you will find a million options to suit all needs and all budgets.

Trains

Trains and Buses. There are 3 types of trains in Italy. Regional, Intercity, and Fresce. Regional trains are the cheapest and have the most stops, even teeny tiny cities you’ve never heard of. Intercity trains run the length of Italy, stopping at cities and large towns. The Frecce trains serve the major cities of Italy alone. This detailed train guide has lots of information on trains.

Long-Distance Train to take you between cities. These trains are called Italo. Italo is a privately owned railroad with high-speed very nice trains! Italo offers economy, comfort, and premier seats. The Italo train can take you from Florence to Rome in only 1.5 hours!

Night trains. A brilliant idea for budget travelers and backpackers. You save the cost of a hotel and you arrive in a new city in the morning! The Thello Night Trains offer trains between Paris and Venice, Milan and Verona, or Venice to France.

In the city

Rent a car or scooter. Parking in cities like Rome and Milan can be a nightmare. In Florence, the center of the city is closed off to cars too. If you are a UK or US citizen, that is something you will be used to. A scooter is definitely easier to park, but the Italians get a little crazy when they drive, so be careful and vigilant when driving! A car is a great option for a road trip through Italy – a great idea to visit multiple cities and experience more of Italy! If you are only visiting one city, there is no need for a car rental. The train and taxis are more than enough!

Taxis and Uber. Taxis are available everywhere, and Uber is also available in Rome and Milan only.

Hire a driver – If you wanna be extra like that haha!

Italy is known for its beautiful Mediterranean climate, found mainly on the coast. The Inland has colder winters but hotter, drier summers.

Italians have a love affair with food, with dishes deeply rooted in Italian culture, and recipes passed down between entire generations. Traditions matter here!

Things to know when traveling to Italy -Budget

If you’ve read any of my articles, you’ll notice me saying the same thing over and over. The budget depends on how you like to travel!

All in all, Italy isn’t a particularly cheap destination, as there is so much to see and hotels are generally expensive. Below, find a board with some daily budget costs to help you!

ATMs are widespread in Italy. Major credit cards are widely accepted, but some smaller shops, trattorias, and hotels might not take them.

DAILY COSTS

Low Budget €80-100

Hostel Accommodation

€25–40

Pizza and Pasta meals

€15 -20

Sightseeing and metro card

€30-40

Tips in Italy

Knowing whether you are expected to tip is definitely one of the things to know when traveling to Italy. After all, no one wants to disrespect someone’s culture 🙂

Italians are not big tippers, so you are not obligated to tip, however, I always tip when I love the service, or more importantly, the food! The following examples can act as are a rough guide:

Taxis: Tipping is optional here, but petty change to round up to the nearest euro is acceptable.

Hotels: In high-end hotels only, a €5 tip to porters in enough for good service.

Restaurants: It is unlikely that the Service (servizio) won’t be included in your bill. If not, 10% is enough!

Bars: Again, petty change can be given at the bar and a euro or two for table service is appreciated!

Things to know when traveling to Italy – Safety

The safety level is one of the main things to know when traveling to Italy. Italy is overall a very safe country, both for residents and travelers.

Luckily, violent crime against tourists is rare, but pickpocketing and petty theft are definitely not!

Don’t carry all your cash with you, be wary of your belongings, and don’t carry stuff in your pockets, or in a bag without a zip.

Solo female travelers safety advice

In some parts of the country, solo female travelers may receive quite a bit of unwanted attention. Eye-to-eye contact and flirtatious behavior are quite normal in Italy, and the further south you travel, the more you will feel that.

If you are a solo female traveler walk to your destination with confidence and avoid alleys and backstreets at night. Parents with children should never leave them unaccompanied – in any country, no matter the safety of the destination!

Safety tip: Regardless of your destination, my top advice is to not seem like a tourist. Holding a map in your hand, your cellphone on the other, and a pocket full of money is not wise.

If you need a map. download one on your phone. Don’t carry large amounts of cash in one place – try to divide it instead! In conclusion, try not to look ”lost”.

  Italy

Simply put, I am in love with Italy.

I first fell in love with it after spending a year in Florence – and I fall in love with it all over again with every single visit. It is only one of 3 countries in the world that I keep coming back to. I have already traveled to Italy a whopping 6 times and I am currently planning a tour of Italy as we speak!

If you are undecided about which part of Italy to visit, my Reasons to Visit Italy Guide will help you make up your mind!

I have stood in quiet awe in from the Sistine Chapel and I have tossed a coin into the Fontana di Trevi. I have climbed the 414 steps to the top of the Duomo Cathedral in Florence and I have awkwardly posed with the leaning tower of Pisa. I have left love notes at Juliet's house in Verona and fallen in love in a gondola in Venice.

But Rome….ahhhh Rome! What is there to say about the Italian Capital that hasn’t been said 100 times? The city of the world, Rome is unlike any other.

”Rome is history in the stones of the streets and the atoms of the sunshine” – Henry James

Rome is a modern-day city and also an archaeological dig that’s dating back to more than 2,800 years. A city so full of influential art, architecture, and history it practically screams.

A beautiful place to visit to admire some Baroque style architecture like the baroque fountain – La Fontana Della Barcaccia and views of the eternal City.

The Spanish Steps connect the lower Piazza di Spagna with the upper piazza Trinita Dei Monti, and its beautiful twin tower church.

Piazza Navona is one of the largest, most visited and most beautiful piazzas in Rome dating all the way back to the 15th century.

It is home to three impressive fountains you will love to explore. First is la Fontana Dei Quattro Fiumi which was constructed in 1651 by Bernini for the pope.

That one is the most photographed fountain in the square exhuming elegance and architectural genius. You can admire its stunning sculptures; a tall Roman obelisk as a centerpiece, the Pope’s coat of arms, a dove, and an olive branch at the base.

The two other fountains are smaller but equally interesting – The Fontana Di Nettuno to the north and the Fontana del Moro to the south with sculptures of dolphins, sea creatures and the like.

Piazza Navona is really bursting with street artists & bars, buzzing nightlife and cosmopolitan energy.

Mozzicone is a family-run restaurant, one that is quite different from La Veranda. You will witness no-frills or elaborate settings, and the food is served in paper plates! But the pasta here is without a doubt one of the best plates of pasta in the City!

My 3days in Rome guide would be incomplete without a real taste of the local life!

Authentic food, authentic prices in a true Italian Eaterie are the perfect way to end your first day in Rome. Il Morzicone is located in Borgo Pio, close to the Vatican Area.

3days in Rome: Day 2 in Rome

Trevi Fountain -La Fontana Di Trevi

One of my favorite places in Rome, la Fontana Di Trevi is a wonder to behold and an absolute must-see in the city. Could you imagine 3days in Rome without a visit to the most famous fountain in the world?

Thousands of people visit the fountain every day, not only to admire and photograph the most Famed Baroque fountain in Rome but also to toss a coin or two and make a wish. (toss one coin to return to Rome, 2 for love and 3 if you wish to get married!)

Here are some Trevi Fountain facts.

1. La Fontana Di Trevi was fully restored in 2015 by none other than Fendi – the Iconic fashion house! Fendi reportedly spent over 2million Euros for the full historical restoration making headlines all over the world! The unveiling of La Fontana Di Trevi happened in November of 2015 and was one of the biggest events in the city.

2. The fountain dates back to 19 B.C and was the oldest water source in Rome.

3. La Fontana Di Trevi is a landmark used in many movies, such as La Dolce Vita, Roman Holiday, Three Coins in the fountain and more.

4. The coins are collected every day (approximately 3-4 thousand Euros) and are given to a local charity which helps the needy buy groceries. It is, therefore, a punishable crime to steal the coins from the fountain.

TIP: If you are early risers, even better. If you can get up and start the day on a high, get up there at 7 am for the best-uninterrupted pictures. The colors surrounding the Trevi Fountain are stunning at that time and there’s hardly anyone about!

To make entries and exits run smoothly, they built over 80 entrances and 36 trap doors. The massive arena also features a vast underground structure where the gladiators, prisoners, and animals were held.

Today, the Colosseum houses beautiful ruins that represent different eras of life in the city and is an absolute must-see in Rome.
What is there to say about the Italian Capital, that hasn’t been said a million times?

There is no other city in the world like it- Period.

it’s a modern 21st-century city and a large archaeological dig that goes back to 2,800 years at the same time.

Every step you take is surrounded by so much influential art, architecture and history it practically screams.

Because it is home to the ancient ruins of the Colosseum and The Forum – taking you back to Julius Caesar and the Romulus Golden Eras.

It is the Home of the Catholic Faith – the Vatican City- and the breathtaking Vatican Museums which houses masterpieces like Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel.

Because a visit to Rome isn’t complete until you’ve tossed a coin and made a wish at the Trevi Fontana and because i know of this hidden little bistro that makes the best pasta i have eaten in my entire life.
