Best place to stay in Istanbul – the European side

Sultanahmet Area

Sultanahmet is the historic and cultural heart of Istanbul and it belongs to the European part of the city.

This district is the best place to stay in Istanbul if you’re visiting the city for the first time.

All the major sites including the Grand Bazaar are located nearby so this area is super convenient for first-time visitors!

1.3* hotel in Sultanahmet

The Apple Tree Hotel is a great 3* option, which is only 500 m from Blue Mosque.

The hotel offers free WiFi throughout the property, buffet breakfast, and beautiful Bosphorus views.

All rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with a flat-screen TV, kettle, minibar, slippers, and hairdryer.

2. 4* hotel in Sultanahmet

The Sura Hagia Sophia Hotel in Sultanahmet is a stunning Ottoman Style 4* Hotel.

It is located right in the heart of the region, and around 250m from the Hagia Sofia.

Conveniently, the Sultanahmet tram is only 2 minutes away!

This hotel is a 4 star, that feels like a 5 star, so perfect for affordable luxury seekers!

The Sura Hagia offers an outdoor swimming pool, gym, a spa with Hammam, free Wifi, and a beautiful botanic garden offering various flower species.

All the rooms are soundproofed and fully equipped with AC, LCD TVs, and satellite channels.

Furthermore, you will find an espresso machine, minibar, and more!

Food-wise, the Sura Restaurant on the ground floor serves incredible kebabs, as well as organic meat and veg grown in the hotel’s own farm (how amazing is THAT!)

5* hotel in Sultanahmet

You are in for a treat with the Ajwa Hotel Sultanahmet!

I adore EVERYTHING about this almost brand new hotel, only a 10-minute walk from all the major sights like the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia!

The Ottoman-style architecture is incredible, providing all the traditional accents to transport you back in time!

The stunning rooms come with handmade Tabriz-style silk carpets and Ottoman-style sofas!

Also, there are HD TVs, electronic curtains, air conditioning, and an underfloor heating system.

As an extra touch of indulgence, rooms M Line Slow Motion beds and plenty of other luxuries.

You can enjoy a touch of first-class cuisine at the Zeferan restaurant.

Zeferan is on the 8th floor and boasts breathtaking views of the Marmara Sea, the Princes Islands, and Sultanahmet.

Exercise enthusiasts will love the gym and indoor pool, and relaxing customers will adore the library and indoor pool!

Apartment in Sultanahmet

Location, location location!

The Green Life Apart Hotel is a stunning one-bedroom apartment right in the heart of Sultanahmet!

The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia are only 500m away, so, definite brownie points for location!

The apartment has a double bedroom, a bath, and views of the Bosphorus as well as a choice to add breakfast to your stay.

Furthermore, you will find a cute little terrace with stunning views, A/C, TV with satellite channels, and free Wifi.

Taksim Area

Taksim – Beyoglu is the heart of the city!

All the cultural events, cinemas, theaters, museums, and great nightlife are all there.

In Taksim you can meet really interesting locals and mix into the daily Istanbul life.

So this area is great if you are a repeat visitor, or if you wish to explore the local side of Istanbul and stay away from all things touristy.

You can take a tram from Taksim to Sultanahmet in less than 30 minutes. Taksim is undoubtedly the best place to stay in Istanbul if you enjoy traveling off the beaten path!

3-star hotel in Taksim

A 3-star hotel is a good budget option that still offers luxuries and convenience.

The CZN Burak Hotel is 400m from Taksim square, and even offers free parking – not often seen in hotels in Istanbul.

The hotel features a bar and local cuisine restaurant, a steakhouse, free wifi, and family rooms.

The hotels Guest rooms are equipped with flat-screen satellite TVs, AC, kettle, and toiletries!

Buffet breakfast is included in your booking.

4* hotel in Taksim

The Taksim Metropark Hotel is a convenient 4* hotel right in the heart of Taksim Square, only 100m away!

You can shop till you drop at the luxury brand Nisantasi Shopping District, which is less than 2km away.

Alternatively, you can enjoy a day at the Cevahir Mall, 3 km away.

Just 100m away, you can jump on a tram, metro, or bus to head to Sultanahmet in no time, and with super convenience!

The hotel is spacious and even offers babysitting services.

The rooms are traditionally decorated with seating areas, Free wifi, large safe, kettle and satellite TV.

5* hotel in Taksim

The Gezi Hotel Bosphorus is located next to Taksim Square and Taksim Metro Station.

What is most exciting, is the cosmopolitan Istiklal Avenue just around the corner packed with bars, restaurants, cafés, shops, and art galleries.

Havatas Airport Shuttle is within walking distance for convenience!

The hotel offers a fitness center, on-site car rentals, and a ticket service to visit the sights.

The spa at the Gezi Hotel is to die for…and probably deserves daily visits!

In it, you’ll find therapeutic water beds, aromatherapy showers, ice fountains, hammam and sauna, and a fitness center to boot.

Absolute.Perfection!

The rooms are equally stunning, with wooden floors, marble bathrooms, satellite TVs, free wifi and mood lighting!

As for food, there is a massive buffet served every morning, and a Mediterranean resto with excellent views of the Bosphorus.

Top tip: The Hotel has been refurbished and is now eco-friendly paying special attention to green energy and water conservation.

Apartment in Taksim

Taksim City suites are a fab option for budget, privacy, and convenience!

The location of this elegant hotel is PERFECT – 200 m from Taksim Square and Taksim Metro Station, and 100 m from the vibrant Istiklal street mentioned above!

The rooms come with free wifi, AV, a safe and satellite tv, as well as a mini-fridge and kettle.

The apartment comes with a private bathroom with a shower.

The historic Sultanahmet area is 4.3 km from the property.

Best place to stay in Istanbul – The Asian Side

The Asian side is so different, you truly feel like you are in a different city! Local life is buzzing here, and tourists are sparse, which makes everything cheaper!

If you are planning on spending a lot time viewing the sights, be aware that staying on the Asian side will mean taking the ferry daily to the European side.

Definitely worth to cross over for the day, but not sure I would choose to spend all my days there.

You do get a big slice of local culture though, so head there if you are a repeat Istanbul traveler!

Meanwhile, if you are keen to explore the Asian side , you should know the hotels are cheaper!

3* hotel in the Asian Part

Look no further than My Dora!

This is a modern and cozy hotel in Kadikoy, with lovely rooms equipped with Free Wifi, spa bath, satellite TV, and tea and coffee facilities.

My Dora hotel also offers a buffet breakfast and is only a 20-minute walk away from Taksim and all its glorious nightlife.

4* hotel in the Asian Part

I love this alternative and spacious hotel – with scenic views of the Princes Islands (mentioned in my Unusual things to do in Istanbul).

The Sanli Hotel is lovely and convenient, being only 150m away from a metro station (the Huzurevi station).

The rooms have a flat-screen TV, safe, AC, Wifi, hairdryer, and toiletries.

There is a 24hr restaurant inside the hotel although some rooms also have a kitchenette and fridge so you could cook some of your own meals!

Free on-site parking is possible. The chic and lively Bagdat Street is 9 km away.

5* hotel in the Asian Part

This is one of my favorite hotels in Istanbul boasting beautiful decor and rooftop panoramic views on the top floor!

So if you enjoy the finer things in life, this is a top contender for Best Place To Stay in Istanbul.

The Divan Istanbul Asia offers modern rooms, and a huge spa with a hammam, sauna, hot tub, and a beautiful rain room!

You will also find an indoor and outdoor pool as well as a fitness center, with its own health bar serving healthy and delicious juices.

The hotel’s rooms are decorated elegantly and have free wifi, satellite TVs, and kettles.

The hotel is situated 3 km from Pendik Marina, where you can catch the ferry to the other side of the Marmara Sea.

Be aware that to get to the European side, you will need to take the ferry across the Bosphorus.

There are many scams in Istanbul- some simple, some more elaborate.

Knowing what they are before you travel there, will save your pockets, dignity, and safety!

Istanbul is a safe city, yes, but that doesn’t mean that tourists don’t often get targeted with petty crimes – because they do!

I have been the victim of Istanbul scams twice, so keep reading to avoid the same happening to you!

Istanbul Scams – The Taxi Scam

Ugh, this one is SOOOO frustrating.

Because it practically messes with your intelligence!

Yes, you guessed it, I was a victim of this Istanbul scam.

The Scam: So you are sitting in the taxi and the meter says 25 TL (Turkish Lira).

You hand in a 50 lira note, and expect some change – but the taxi driver quickly changes your 50 note with a 5.

He then says, ”you only gave me a 5 I need another 20”.

You KNOW you have given a 50 but you can’t PROVE it.

So you are forced to hand it another 20.

How to respond: Well I was so frustrated I just started screaming in Greek. No, it didn’t help my situation, but it sure made me feel better!

Make sure you watch him carefully. Tell him you need change before you hand in any money. ”Do you have change? I only have a 50”. Let him respond before you hand in your money.

If he is insistent or gets aggravated, cut your losses and get out.

Istanbul Scams – Currency Conversion Shopping Scam

This one is tricky, and the main reason why I don’t like paying with credit cards when I am shopping abroad!

As mentioned in my Istanbul Travel Blog, it is always better to convert to local currency.

The Scam: You are out shopping in the numerous markets in Istanbul. A lovely and polite salesperson will assist you perfectly.

Of course, he will reassure you that whatever he is selling (rugs, jewelry, leather) is 100% authentic.

Once you have decided to purchase, your card will be charged in YOUR local currency, not theirs.

And if you think that 1 Euro is 7.5 Turkish Lira, the difference is immense! You will basically end up paying 7 times the amount.

How to respond: Pay in local currency everywhere you go. Avoid paying with credit cards.

Another trick is to pay with a Revolut card (I have been using it for 2 years and it’s free). BUT make sure you leave it empty and only transfer a small amount into it at the time.

That way, your card won’t have enough funds to be overcharged 🙂

Istanbul Scams – The drinks Scam

The Scam: In the evening, while you are walking the streets of Taksim or Istiklal, a friendly man will approach, and start asking you questions or serving compliments like hot potatoes.

If you stop walking and engage in conversation, you will be asked to go to their bar for a drink.

They will say it is the best club of course, with the best crowd, drinks, women, etc.

Upon entering the establishment, you will realize it is a strip club.

Drinks will be brought to you and a woman that will magically appear at your side before you even had a chance to order them!

But what is so bad about that? You ask. Well, the bill will be HUGE. Like, hundreds of euros. If you try to leave, you will be threatened by security, and might even be forced to an ATM to withdraw the funds!

How to Respond: Do NOT engage in conversation. Say, ”no thank you” and keep walking away! If you ignore them, they give up!

If you wish to party, ask to see a price menu BEFORE you enter.

Istanbul Scams – The ”no change” scam

The Scam: You are in a taxi, and you hand a 5 TL (Turkish Lira) note and need some change. All of a sudden, the driver miraculously runs out of change.

He produces less change and insists he hasn’t got any more on him.

How to respond: Either let him keep the petty change, or insist he pop in a store and procure some change.

I guarantee you anything, that change will magically appear out of thin air!

Istanbul Scams – The Stolen and Fake Goods Scam

The Scam: Perfume, designer labels. carpets, jewelry, and leather goods – are all subject to fraud.

Outside of malls, or in the tourist areas of Sultanahmet and Grand Bazaar, merchants will try to push fake perfume and sunglasses down your throat and my God are they relentless!

They swear the goods aren’t fake, and even offer to show you the authenticity barcode. Don’t be fooled, they are totally fake!

Carpets and jewelry are where you need to be EXTRA careful with – as the cost of buying them will be far higher than perfume.

Please be careful you won’t be given a fake piece, that is worthless!

A piece of jewelry or traditional Turkish rug can cost from hundreds of euros to tens of thousands.

How to Respond: Especially when buying rugs or jewelry, do your research beforehand. Know exactly what you are looking for, the category of it, and the approximate price.

To avoid this Cliche Istanbul scam from happening to you, only deal with a reputable store. Make sure you take a look at a few before making a decision!

Istanbul Scams – The Restaurant Scam

Food couldn’t be excluded from this Istanbul scams list!

Istanbul is a place for great food- no doubt about that. Bus as with every country, tourists will not often be served authentic, delicious food.

Scam 1: Tourist areas are almost always serving second-rate food so caution is advised! The prices are higher, and the quality of the food is subpar.

How to respond: In general – if you see a menu only in English, walk away. If a restaurant serves 50 dishes walk away.

And lastly, if there are no locals there, then walk straight out the door! But there is also another scam to be aware of

Scam 2: The waiter brings water, nibbles, or wine to the table without you ordering them. You are delighted and think it is part of the culture, but when the bill comes, you will soon realize they are not for free!

How to respond: Be thorough when you order, and respectfully decline any additional items landing on your table!

Pickpocketing

Of course, this is the most common petty theft and an act that plagues any country you travel to, particularly – in my opinion – Europe!

Pickpocketing will most often take place in a highly crowded, touristic location. Think bus stations, metro, and trams!

How to protect yourself: Men should avoid carrying wallets and phones in their pockets. Instead, check out this waterproof, anti-theft, lightweight messenger bag!

Women should always carry a bag that has a zip, or better yet, buy a backpack!

For extra safety, I am extremely impressed with this Anti-theft backpack!

It has been designed with a password lock, can fit a laptop, and is made with waterproof mesh fabric.

Furthermore, it has a  built-in USB charger outside and a built-in charging cable inside so you can safely charge your phone while out and about!

What to do if you have been Scammed

If you find yourself the victim of any of the above, don’t panic.

For scams with small amounts, you will probably be angry more than anything else, but hey c’est la vie!

For scams with higher amounts, there may be something you can do! I personally keep ALL receipts of ALL travel purchases until I have returned back home.

This is CRUCIAL when you want to prove you have been taken advantage of.

If you realize you have been a victim of an Istambul scams scheme and are still in the country, take your receipt and go back to the store and dispute it.

Threaten them by getting the police involved if need be! Alternatively, contact the actual police or customer service office.

Where is Istanbul ?

Istanbul is in Turkey. It is one of the most special cities in the world, as its position belongs to Europe and Asia at the same time.

In the south of Istanbul you find the Marmara Sea, and to the north, the Black Sea.

On the European side, you will find all the historical sights, and on the Asian side, all the glorious food markets, and what I like to call, the real essence of the city.

Istanbul Travel Blog – Why you should visit

This city is without a doubt one of the most fascinating cities in Europe or Asia.

The reasons are many, but in a single city, you will find a plethora of Greek and Eastern influences.

Additionally, your eyes will marvel at monuments like Ayia Sofia church, mosques, tombs, palaces, and food markets.

At the same time, you can explore cosmopolitan shopping, street art, beautiful rooftop restaurants, and a lively night scene to top it all off!

This Istanbul travel blog will take you through this enigmatic city filled with wonders, culture, and a perfect combination of ancient and modern!

A brief History – Why Istanbul is really, Costantinoupoli

Until 1453, Istanbul was in fact called Constantinople (Kostantinoupoli) and was founded by the Roman Emperor Constantine I in 324.

The city was set on the site of an already-existing city, called Byzantium, which was settled in the early days of Greek colonial expansion, in around 657 BC, by colonists of the city-state of Megara.

In 1453 it was captured by the Ottoman Empire and made the Ottoman capital. Later in 1923, the Republic of Turkey was founded and so the capital became Ankara. 

Constantinople was officially renamed Istanbul in 1930 and Hagia Sofia was turned into a mosque.

The dwindling Byzantine Empire came to an end when the Ottomans invaded the city by breaching Constantinople’s ancient land wall after besieging the city for 55 days.

The war was bloody, brutal, and cruel, with over 4.000 deaths.

The Fall of Costantinoupoli called outrage, and Pope Nicholas immediately sought help to recover the city, although he received no help from any Western Monarch.

The fall of the legendary Constantinople was a turning point in Western History and is seen as the end of the Middle Ages.

What is it like visiting Istanbul as a Greek or Cypriot citizen?

I’m going to be brutally honest here.

Istanbul is a safe country to visit- sure – but my experience as a Greek Cypriot traveling there was somewhat… different.

And I will be the first to admit, that perhaps I am also to blame, as I am prejudiced because of all the bad history between the Turks and Greeks/Cypriots.

After all, Cyprus was invaded by Turkey in 1974, and still wrongfully inhabits 1/3 of my country.

But I have to say, the minute we spoke Greek, we were met with a certain hostility that made me uncomfortable.

Taxis didn’t seem eager to take us to the Saint George’s church for Greek Easter, and Ayia Sofia (A Greek Wonder) was filled with Islamic inscriptions everywhere.

All these details made me feel kind of unwanted, so I feel compelled to share them here.

Do let me know if you have a different experience, especially as a Greek.

Istanbul Travel Blog – Language and Religion

The official language in Istanbul is Turkish, although English is also spoken due to tourism.

The religion is mostly Muslim, although some small proportions of Christians and Jewish people still live in the city.

Istanbul Travel Blog – Dress Code

As stated above, Istanbul is a Muslim city, although it is also modern and westernized!

As a result, the dress code is relaxed, but also modest.

A headscarf is not mandatory for women but you will need to cover up when you visit a mosque. Men should also wear t-shirts and have their knees covered to visit mosques.

Make sure you pack a pashmina, so you can quickly and easily cover-up. (you will need to do this several times per day!)

Tia’s tip: Feel free to pack something fabulous if you want to hit a nightclub! The dress code there is definitely more relaxed!

Where to stay in Istanbul

Choosing where to stay, will greatly affect the quality of your holidays and of course your accommodation and transportation budget!

Istanbul Travel Blog – Climate

In this Istanbul travel blog, I find climate information to be of crucial importance! ‘There is nothing worse than freezing in your entire trip and trust me, I say this from bitter experience!

Summer is both warm and humid with very little rain but during winter, it is cold, wet, and sometimes snowy.

The hottest month is August (25-30 degrees) and the coldest is January (6 degrees).

Best time to visit

The summer is pretty great in Istanbul!

It is definitely not as hot as Cyprus, but it is busier and more crowded. Springtime is a good time to visit – less heat and fewer crowds too.

On average, April is 17 degrees and May is even better at 22 degrees!

Alternatively, September and October are also beautiful months to visit, with 25 and 20 degrees respectfully!

What if I visit Istanbul during Ramadan?

I have a whole article about what it is like visiting a Muslim country during Ramadan!

This will help you understand what Ramadan is, and to know how it will affect your holidays.

For example, some sights might be closed as well as many restaurants and bars. Or as a sign of respect, you might like to only eat and drink inside closed doors.

Muslims practicing Ramadan do not eat, smoke, have intercourse, alcohol, or even water from sun up to sundown.

Particularly in Istanbul, you will find many things open during that time.

Such examples are the famous Grand Bazaar, many restaurants, food stalls, and sights. The famous Blue mosque is also open, but with limited opening hours.

Tia’s Tip: During Ifte (the breaking of the fast at sundown) restaurants might be super busy and crowded.

Istanbul Travel Blog – Cuisine

Istanbul is a melting pot of multicultural influences and delicious tastes.

In most of the dishes, you will find southeast European staples and Middle Eastern tastes. These of course, result in a fantastic culinary experience!

The 360 rooftop restaurant is one of my favorites in the city for fine dining and excellent views of the city!

Can I eat street food?

Absolutely! The hygienic standards are quite high in Istanbul, and you’ll find many tempting food stalls in the streets!

As always, I advise being sensible when it comes to choking where to eat in ALL your travels.

Choose establishments that are busy, especially with locals! And of course, make sure it looks clean, and that food is prepared fresh and not left outside for ages!

Should I leave tips?

A 10% tip is customary in restaurants, but not in bars or taxi rides.

Tia’s tips: Before you tip, make sure you check the bill! If it says ”Servis Dahil” it means they gave already added your service charge 🙂

Can I drink the tap water?

No! Bottled water is a better choice for tourists, and is widely available everywhere you go!

In the event of a funny stomach from water, food, or alcohol, make sure you take some activated charcoal tablets. You will need to pack those in your bag beforehand.

I buy mine from Amazon, as it is so much cheaper online than in the pharmacy! Activated Charcoal sucks up all the toxins from the body and will eliminate stomach pain, nausea, or diarrhea in no time!

Istanbul Travel Blog – Transportation and Airports

Istanbul is actually a large city, but thankfully, not too hard to get around.

You can choose many transportation options like the bus, metro, tram, ferry, and taxi.

The airports in Istanbul are two, Ataturk airport on the European side, and Sabina Gokcen Airport on the Asian side.

Ataturk is the airport most frequently used by tourists!

Do I need a visa?

Cypriot travelers need to apply for an E-visa online and obtain their visa on arrival or online. The same rules apply to UK citizens too!

Tip: You will need to enter the names and details of babies and children traveling with you.

Additionally, you MUST buy your e-visa before your arrival in Istanbul. The visa is valid for 180 days, but you can only stay for 90 days in the city.

What is the best way to cross between Asia and Europe in Istanbul?

The cheapest and most enjoyable way to cross between the European and Asian sides is to take the ferry.

There are frequent ferries that take this route between Eminomu and Kadikoy. Alternatively, you can take a bus or Metrobus!

Lastly, you can visit the famous bridge, and walk along to cross from Asia to Europe.

Istanbul Travel Blog – Budget

I say this in all my articles, but please remember that you can travel either cheaply or expensively everywhere in the world, including Istanbul!

This depends on the type of accommodation you choose, the amount of shopping you want to do, and the type of food you choose to eat!

On average, I spent around 40- 50 euros daily on food, sightseeing, drinks, transport, and unexpected items here and there.

Below is a daily average budget plan.

Should I exchange money?

The Currency in Istanbul is the Turkish lira. Although large shops and sights might accept Euros, I would advise you to trade in the Lira.

You can use ATMs, which are available everywhere in the city. Better yet, pop into a currency exchange office, where you will get better rates.

Tia’s Tip: You will always save money by exchanging in the country you are visiting. Take out enough money from an ATM at the airport for the first day, and exchange the rest in the city.

For good rates, DO NOT exchange at the airport, or your hotel!

Safety and Tourist Scams in Istanbul

All things considered, Istanbul is a safe city. There are very few violent crimes in the city, although caution should be applied all our travels!

What is not uncommon though, are petty thefts and tourist scams. I was the victim of two of those in the space of a week!

Turkey operates on 220 volts, 50 Hz, with round-prong European-style plugs

. I used my international travel adapter. It has got to be my most used travel purchase of all time – and it’s super cheap too!

Why is Istanbul so photogenic?

There is beautiful architecture everywhere, clear signs of the Greeks and Ottomans. There is a certain flair in the air, an eclecticism. 

You will see colors; so many colors! Food markets bursting at the seams with colorful produce and spice racks overflowing with Istanbul’s finest herbs and spices.

Strolling through the city you will witness street art, majestic churches like Haya Sofia and mosques, and urban shopping streets.

Istanbul manages to marry the old and the new in a fascinating, vibrant package, one you can’t help but fall in love with.

Istanbul Photography – The Majestic Hagia Sophia

What is there to say about the INCREDIBLE Hagia Sophia?

Also known as the Church of the Holy Wisdom or Church of the Divine Wisdom, we are talking about an important Byzantine structure and one of the world’s great monuments.

It was built as a Christian church in the 6th century CE (532–537) under the direction of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I.

After the fall of Costantinople ( the real name of Istanbul) to the Turks in 1453, it was turned into a mosque and in 1935 into a museum.

Then in 1985 the Hagia Sophia was designated a component of a UNESCO World Heritage site called the Historic Areas of Istanbul

In 2020 though, President Erdogan made the controversial decision to convert the Hagia Sophia back into a mosque. It makes me wonder, where was UNESCO then?

Who could have the audacity to convert one of the most celebrated and influential monuments of Christianity into a mosque? And actually get away with it?

As you can probably tell, it is a bitter subject for us Greeks and Cypriots.

Bear in mind that the Blue Mosque is built directly opposite Hagia Sophia. Until the completion of Blue Mosque in 1616 the Hagia Sophia was the main mosque in the city. Its architecture directly inspired builders of the Blue Mosque and several others around the world.

The Beautiful Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque, also known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is an Ottoman-era historical imperial mosque.

It is very much a functioning mosque, whilst also attracting a lot of tourists.

It was constructed between 1609 and 1616 during the rule of Ahmed I, and it is built opposite the majestic ( and VERY Greek) Hagia Sofia.

Istanbul is known for its traditional rugs and textiles. Turkish rugs are made from only the most high-quality materials. Hand-spun wool and silk are the most valuable but you can also find cotton or wool-cotton combinations.

The ferry also transports you from the European side, to the Asian side, so you can combine a beautiful cruise, with the crossing between 2 continents!

Istanbul has been the capital of some of the biggest empires: Roman, Byzantine, Latin, and Ottoman.

Istanbul is one of the few cities in the world to be shared by two continents.

Five of the most well-known transcontinental cities are Istanbul, Atyrau, Orenburg, Magnitogorsk, and Suez.

What should I avoid in Istanbul?

Well for starters, you should avoid getting scammed! Istanbul is notorious for scamming tourists. But fear not as I have an article full of the Istanbul scams you should know about!

Other tips would be:

• Avoid Shopping at Istiklal street – It is rather expensive and doesn’t offer anything unique
• Don’t take the tram in Istiklal street – It is so crowded!
• Never pay full price for anything at the Bazaars

How can I have fun in Istanbul?

There are so many fun things to do in Istanbul! Apart from world-famous monuments and exquisite cuisine, there are historic cruises, and shopping sprees at the Grand Bazaar too!

Additionally, there is fascinating history and architecture, buzzing nightlife, street art, and amazing workshops.

Istanbul indeed has a lot more to offer.

My guide to the most unusual things to do in Istanbul is a journey through Istanbul’s off-the-beaten-path side!

It’s a taste of the local side, which in my opinion holds the real juice and flavor of this incredible multicultural city.

When you start experiencing travel off the beaten path, the whole travel game changes!

The 13 Most Unusual things to do in Istanbul

1. Take a boat trip to the Princes Islands and the lesser-known Burgazada Island

Take a day trip away from the busy city to explore the beautiful Princes Islands – an archipelago of 9 islands located in the Sea of Marmara.

The prince’s islands are easily accessible via ferry, and they are home to many multicultural beauties. Some of those are the Greek monasteries and Ottoman architecture.

Burgazada is one of the lesser-known islands (the biggest one is the island of Buyukada) and so it is a perfect island for some much-needed beach time. The water is calm and clear and the island is calm and secluded.

I advise you to spend the day there and soak up the sun! Then, you should start exploring the island!

You will find lush greenery, many historical churches such as the Ayios Ioannis church (dating back to the Byzantine period), and also the ruins of the Greek Christos Monastery from the 9th century.

At the top of the hill, Bayrak Hill is the place to go for beautiful panoramic views. All these and more await you to explore the island of Burgazada.

2. Photograph exquisite Urban street art

These urban and colorful graffiti masterpieces will be a joy to explore and photograph.

You will find Graffiti street art all over this colorful city but is even more evident in a neighborhood like Sishane.  

You should make sure to bring a camera, so you take plenty of photographs of these 3D and larger-than-life pieces!

Plenty of shops, cafes, and restaurants in the neighborhood to relax after spending a couple of hours exploring!

Definitely, a must if you wish to explore unusual things to do in Istanbul!

3. Visit the railway museum from the Orient Express

Are you a fan of trains and railways? Then you will surely enjoy this short and sweet experience at the railway museum.

This small museum features over 300 historical items, from old trains and various separate parts like seats, doors, etc, and long-forgotten documents and photographs.  

The museum is located in Sirkeci Terminal, the terminal that used to be the end of the famed Orient Express!

Interesting fact: This tiny museum exists within a fully operational train station, in the heart of Istanbul!

4. Witness a traditional religious ceremony

 If you wish to explore traditional and unusual things to do in Istanbul, the Whirling Devices are a must!

No matter your religion, opening your eyes to other cultures, customs and religions will be an eye-opening and soul-searching experience.

This is a century-old ceremony that marries dance and Sufi worshiping.

This is not a tourist performance, but luckily for us, the ‘’Whirling Devices’’ dance is performed within the Sema of the Galata museum.

And every Sunday at 5 pm, tourists are allowed to observe.

My advice? Remain quiet, respectful, and simply enjoy this mystical whirling dance!

5. Indulge in a culinary journey through Ottoman History at Asitane Restaurant

You’ll find plenty of restaurants in Istanbul, and plenty of tourist traps too.

What frustrates me the most, is experiencing second-rate cuisine; especially in a city famed for its dishes!

So if you are looking for authenticity as well as unusual things to do in Istanbul, you need to visit the Asitane Restaurant.

Asitane is a restaurant fully committed to keeping up with the traditions – something that hasn’t changed since 1991.

So much so, that before their opening, they spend months digging up traditional and long-forgotten recipes from Topkapi and the Dolmabace Palaces! They also drew inspiration from libraries and journals from over 500 years ago.  

What it’s like eating here

Expect to travel through time in Ottoman culinary history! The menu is vast – there are over 450 recipes!

All of them keeping up with the traditional tastes, ingredients, and preparation methods of their time.

Choose between the indoor and outdoor seating in the quiet part of the historical Edirnekapi, and you will adore all that Asitane stands for.

6. Awaken your senses at a couples-friendly Turkish Hamam

Everyone should definitely visit one or two in their lifetime.

 But visiting an authentic Hamam in Turkey – the birth country of Turkish baths is an absolute necessity if you want an authentic experience!

I searched long and hard for Hamams in the city that could provide couples services – as the majority have different hours for men and women and couples are not accepted. And I found it!  

My Hamam Experience

My experience at the Süleymaniye Hamam was everything I had hoped for, and then some.

The journey started with a long and very steaming time in the huge marbled room for 15-20 minutes.

Then, 2 well-trained male masseurs greeted us and took us into the steaming adjoining room.

They proceeded to give us a long soapy wash, followed by an invigorating and inventive scrub.

They finished with a relaxing, soapy massage that made me feel like my limbs were as light as feathers!  

Definitely, one of the best Hamam experiences I have had in all my travels.  

No single males or females are admitted – this is a couple and families Hamam only.

Süleymaniye Hamam Details

The Hamam provides everything you will need: from towels to bathing suits, hairdryers, and slippers!  

You can combine your Hammam experience with a visit to the Grand Bazaar (they are close to each other)  

Payment can be made online or on the spot. The establishment accepts Turkish Lira, Euros, and Dollars too!

I personally booked and paid online with great success. Booking in advance is definitely recommended.

7. Descent 52 steps into History- and the depths of the Basilica Cistern

Beneath the city of Istanbul, there are several hundred cisterns, but only two are open to the public.

The Basilica Cistern is one of those two and it also happens to be the largest one. This giant structure has the capacity to store 100.000 tons of water.

Only a 150meters from the famous Hagia Sofia, this Bystantine Cistern dates back to the 9th century!  

Here you can take the 52 stone steps to descend into the cold, and slightly dark depths of the Basilica.

You will be amazed by the famous Medusa column bases and the Corinthian Style marbles. The marbles are what actually support the Cisterns roof and the majestic forest of columns.

All this is a clear indication of Istanbul’s Greek roots (Konstantinoupoli).

Definitely one for your bucket list of unusual things to do in Istanbul.

8. Take a workshop and learn the Art of Turkish Marbling

The history of Turkish marbling

The Turkish art of marbling is called Ebru and it is believed to have started in the 13th century.

Turkish marbling started in Turkey and later on spread to Japan, China, and India.

What is ebru you ask?

Ebru is basically colorful patterns of pigmented color in a tray of an oily water solution. The design is then transferred onto paper and fabric.

This traditional Turkish art is definitely a great way to spend a day and explore some of the unusual things to do in Istanbul.

The Workshop

In the fascinating workshop of Les Arts Turks, you can learn to create your own marble designs including the famous Turkish flower patterns.

These unique print designs are used as covers for various things like calligraphy, stationery, book covers, documents, and official correspondence.

How you will learn to marble

 Upon entering the lively workshop, I was given a verbal introduction to the rich Turkish marbling history.

Then, I was handed a bright apron and all the equipment that I needed to get my creativity going.

Side by side with your teacher you will learn to apply the delicate art of marbling.

Once you have finished your masterpiece, it will be transferred to fabric and you will be able to take this wonderful homemade souvenir back home with you.

9. Explore two continents in one day –and Istanbul’s Asian Side

This list of unusual things to do in the Istanbul guide would be incomplete without a mention! The 2 continents are only 20 minutes distance from each other via bus, taxi or ferry.  

The European side has the better name due to its many popular tourist attractions, palaces, churches, and cisterns.

What you don’t know is that there is also much to see on the Asian Side of Istanbul too.

Like the historical Kadikoy Bazzar, the Dolmabahce Palace, and the Mural Istanbul Festival.  

Must-dos on the Asian side of Istanbul

Take a ferry and Cross over to the Asian Side. Then head to the Kadikoy neighborhood and start walking the streets!

I recommend you check out the Kadikoy food market, the waterfront with the fantastic views of the Sultanahmet Skyline, and the Mural Festival too!

The Mural Festival is an open-air art festival bursting at the seams with stunning street art from both local and international artists.  

Top Tip: The Ferry to Kadikoy will cost you 3 TL. Ferries leave from either side of the Galata Bridge.    

10. Learn the art of cooking Turkish food

The only thing better than eating the food in Istanbul is perhaps learning how to cook it yourself!

This is because the food in Istanbul is as diverse as the city! Think of Turkish cuisine, with added Greek and Asian Influences.

The cuisine here is heavy on the spice and big on the taste.

This cooking class is such a fun way to spend ½ a day in the city – and every time you cook these dishes back home, you will be reminded of Istanbul!

A definite YES to anyone wanting to try out unusual things to do in Istanbul!

 This cooking class of Cooking Alaturka will teach you how to make traditional Ottoman and Anatolian dishes! As a result, once you are done with cooking, you’ll enjoy the 5- course food with drinks and conversation!

11. Visit the Rezan Has Museum

  This is no ordinary museum! This is because the Rezan Has Museum is dedicated to connecting the past with the future.

The Rezan showcases Ottoman structural artifacts dating back to the 17th century, and Byzantine gems going as far back as the 11th century.  

As a result, you will see a  rich collection of archaeological artifacts, and a special preservation and restoration unit. At the Rezan Has, there are also regular exhibitions.

For example, a particularly interesting exhibition I found was the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory exhibition.

I got to observe the first tobacco and cigarette machines along with their original documents and information!

All those make this museum a real gem in the busy city life of Istanbul.

12. Explore the Ahmed Tevfik Pasa Mezarl Tombs.

Would you like to add a sultans Cemetary to your unusual things to do in Istanbul list? Well, now you can.

It is in this cemetery that you will find the tombs of Ahmed Tevfik Pasha and his family. Ahmed Pasha is also known as the last Ottoman Grand Vizier, and he was an important figure in the Ottoman Dynasty for years.

The tombs are the cemetery for 3 famed and powerful Sultans; Mahmud the 2nd, Abdul Aziz and Abdul Hamid the 2nd.

Inside the cemetery, you will find the sultan’s tombs in all their colorful and intricate glory.

Walk back outside and you will find yourselves in the gardens surrounded by trees and cute cats! This is where the politicians like Ahmed Tevkik and their families are kept.

This cemetery is a wonderful visit to see many of Istanbul’s most influential figures’ tombs.

It is also a rather fascinating way to witness how the Turks like to honor their dead.

13. Stroll through the Kadikoy Food Market

Kadikoy has a few markets around – but the Kadikoy Tuesday Market is the one that is definitely worthy of the trip.  

Possibly the neatest food and thrift market in Istanbul!

It has everything, from textiles to curtains and household items, antiques, furniture, and beautiful books. Alongside, there are nuts, rare Anatolian herbs, and spices!

There are also dairy goods and pastries, vine leaves olives, fruit, and vegetables…all neatly stacked and presented for your pleasure.  

Gift Tips: Vine leaves and pickles are some of the key representatives of Ottoman cuisine.

Not only do they represent the local culture, but they are also light too which makes them excellent gift ideas to take home!

Is this a local or tourist market?

In this market, you really become one with the locals that make the majority of the visitors.

Begin by taking a leisurely stroll on the huge market. Then grab some freshly baked goods or a delicious lachmagoon from one of the many bakeries.

Observe, watch and become familiar with the bursting colors and smells of the Kadikoy Tuesday Market.

History Of Istanbul

Istanbul, or Costantinoupoli, is Turkey’s largest city and the heart of its economic and cultural center. It is one of the largest cities in the world with a population of over 14 million.

Istanbul is situated on a peninsula at the entrance of the Black Sea. Not only is Istanbul Turkey’s largest city; it also stretches on either side of the Bosporus, making it one of the only cities in the world that is built on two continents; Europe and Asia.

The city, formerly known as Constantinople is built on the site of the ancient Greek city ​​of Byzantium. The emperor Alexander the Great made the city the seat of the Eastern Roman Empire in 330, later naming it Constantinople.

In 1453 it was captured by the Ottoman Empire and made into the Ottoman capital. Then in 1923, the Republic of Turkey was founded, and so the capital moved to Ankara.

This resulted in Constantinople being officially renamed Istanbul in 1930.
