Why are you sharing your embarassing moments?

We all need some humor in our lives…and in truth, there is something funny or a tale to be told about all travel experiences – both good and bad!

Luckily for me, I entertain my self on the daily with endless memories of short travel Stories or as I like to call them.. my Epic Travel Fails.

Beacuse on every trip I go to, I end up getting myself in some form of trouble but luckily for me, I always resurface fabulous and alive to tell the tale.

Such was the case with my time in Thailand at the beautiful ..Koh Samui island.

Short Travel Stories – The Secret Beach

As true bonafide tourists, we had rented a motorbike for our 10 days to Samui. 

We took full advantage of this bike to tour every inch and crevice of this incredible island before moving on to PP Islands.

By we, i mean myself and for the purpose of this short travel story, Mr P (the ex)

On our last day there, we woke up determined to find a secret beach- with the ultimate goal to take incredible pictures for the blog you are reading now.

The Thunderstorm

After driving up and down the coast, we stumbled on this hidden, tiny unorganized beach, and the blogger in me was ecstatic- this secret beach was phenomenal!

3 Cosmopolitans in and about 25 million pictures later, we decided to head back to our resort.

I felt like such a babe riding shotgun on the scooter wearing my brand new white bikini, the wind in my hair and not a care in the world, that the sudden rainstorm didn’t even phase me.

Thailand is known for its tropical weather after all!

The problem was…that the rain sure as hell phased the motorbike.

Short Travel Stories – The Accident

Under the heavy sudden storm, the motorbike (which Mr. P decided to drive like the pro rally driver every boy wishes he was) was in the way of car traffic.

This forced Mr. P to keep as close to the edge of the street as possible.

But this foolish man got so close, and the streets were so slippery that the bike swerved and went off into the side of the street- aka, the Thai Jungle.

Mr. P like the lucky man he is fell unto the side of the road.

But Where did Tia fall u ask?……Well, the jungle..of course!!!

There was Thick, lush vegetation all around us, and a tiny opening of trees, with a small opening of a deep hole underneath which led to… nothing I guess – probably death!

I mean this opening was small, you probably couldn’t find it if you tried!

But that’s exactly where I fell.

I can still picture it in slow motion…

Like a deranged magicians assistant, legs flaying in the air, I performed my final disappearing act, by nosediving right into the hole of emptiness.

During my nosedive act, all I could think of was ”For F*** sakes, not again!”

I completed my disappearing act by straddling a tree branch that had grown in a horizontal direction – like a cowboy wannabe riding the rodeo in a cheap bar in Texas.

Classy.

But God decided that today was not the day to die.

The Rescue

I don’t know how long I stayed on that branch, dumbfounded and in shock before Mr. P and a couple of bystanders arrived to retrieve me from the hole of emptiness.

Mostly I was highly confused as to how I ended up there!

I was shaken up but alive, with not much than a few scrapes and cuts to tell the tale.

I felt hands reaching down and pulling me up.

Then, I saw the face of a gentle Thai man helping me out – who took one look at me and started laughing.

Like Aphrodite on steroids, I emerged from the Thai jungle– My previously white bikini now brown,green and ruined, with a single flip flop on one foot – (The other lost forever in the hole of emptiness), and tree branches and leaves coming out of my hair like an extra in a Midsummer Nights Dream play.

NOT quite as fabulous as I had hoped.

A crooked neck, a few cuts and bruises (and minus my dignity) we rode the bike from hell back to our hotel, where I promised never to let Mr. P ride a motorcycle anywhere near me again.

Bye, Bye flip flop..and bye bye White Bikini – I still think of you from time to time!

And THAT folks is the short travel story of how I performed my famous disappearing act in the Thailand Jungle.

Serious Note:

All jokes aside, Thailand is known for lethal catastrophic accidents, with over 24.000 people dying in road accidents per year!

A whopping 73% of those accidents are scooter accidents! This BBC article talks about the sad statistics in more detail.

Sharks in Belize are plentiful. And when I heard that I could swim with them on a lower risk scale I was sold!

I mean, isn’t it everyone’s dream to swim with sharks and live to tell the tale?

The Dream

I always wanted to swim with Sharks.

The obvious goal was to swim with sharks without being eaten alive.

After a good few years of traveling, I finally plucked up the courage to face my fears and Swim with Sharks during my Central America trip to Belize.

The bestie (who today shall be named Mrs. S) didn’t need much persuading either – she’s on my own level of crazy!

The Sharks in Belize Plan

So when I read up on Shark Ray Alley on Ambergris Caye in Belize I immediately booked the excursion and started mentally preparing.

By mentally preparing I mean following a set of steps. I always take every time I am phased with yet another epic travel fail:

Firstly, Whatever you do, do NOT tell mum. She will freak out regardless of your age and then blame you for premature aging.

Secondly, Tell as many people as you can either that you love them, or that you hate their guts. (in case you like, die).

And last but not least, take a deep breath, and go for it!

I did all 3 and I am so glad because these kinds of funny travel stories are my very own travel legacy. One that I will treasure forever and remember until my very last days.

Are there really sharks in Belize?

For many visitors to Belize, exploring the waters of the Caribbean Sea is on the top of their to-do list.

This is because it is renowned for an impressive variety of sharks, from the offshore Whale Sharks to Caribbean Reef Sharks, Silky, Bull, Tiger Sharks, and Hammerheads.

The Nurse sharks, however, are the type of shark you see the most of, and by far the friendliest of the bunch.

So when the opportunity came about to swim with Nurse Sharks I knew I’d found the right tour!

The reviews were amazing, and the pictures were awesome!

Ecstatic tourists were saying how they got to touch the sharks (apparently they feel like rough sandpaper).

So we booked those seats immediately! Hurrah!

The day finally came

 We ate lobster by a shack practically in the middle of the Caribbean Sea like it was our last meal on earth.

We went over every possible scenario of things going wrong.

I told her that if I die id like to be cremated and for people to wear white at my funeral. Honestly though, why am I so dramatic?

We armed ourselves with underwater cameras and into the boat we went.

Upon arrival at Coral Gardens, the first destination, we quickly got into the water, with our guide.

O.M.G. Awesome!!!

No sharks here, but plenty of awesomeness all around! Giant turtles, colorful fish, and a shy and lazy Manatee that swan lazily next to me for ages!

Shark Ray Alley

Feeling like the real conquerors of the sea, we arrived at our second stop… the infamous Shark Ray Alley.

The sound of the engines alone immediately drew dozens of sharks and huge stingrays around the boat.

Brownish grey in color and some of them over six feet in size!!

There they were...swimming in circles around the boat. Hello ''Jaws'' flashbacks.
Damn you Steven Spielberg, you ruined an entire generation of kids! 

I took one look at my bestie and armed myself with courage. In reality, I wanted to scream “Good God in heaven”. I’m gonna die! But I am a firm believer in fake it till you make it, so I kept that one quiet haha.

Snorkel mask on (seriously no one looks attractive wearing those) I jumped into the water saying my last prayer.

The Hysteria

”GAAAAHHH!!! Something touched my foot!! ”

”I feel no pain but maybe I’m in shock?? Has a shark chopped it off?? ”

I frantically look down with the elegance of a crazed goat in search of floating limps. Nop, the foot is still attached.

A panic moment is in full swing, and I somehow forget to breathe. My mask escapes my face, there is water in my eyes and I am practically drowning my own damn self in shallow water. Classy Tia, classy.

”Calm down Tia” I whisper to myself. Fixing the mask, I dive underwater.

Mrs. S is there, loving it and frantically pointing at the sharks as if I have lost my sight and can’t actually see them right in front of my face.

”Holy S*** … Look at the size of them!!!”

Camera at the ready and shaking hands in full galore I start swimming to join the pack of 6 sharks circling the bottom of the ocean and eating fish bits thrown in by the boat.

But wait… Sensing my presence they quickly swim off.

What?!? Why are they leaving?!

The Confusion

I come up for air in full confusion.

The snorkel guide looks at them with the same adoration I look at my students when they finally master a correct grand plie.

”They are just a little shy,” he says.

HUH? Shy? The sharks… are SHY?

I quickly decide he hasn’t got a clue about sharks. Sharks are many things but surely shy isn’t one of them! 

For a while, I get preoccupied with the -MANY- stingrays all around my feet.

I manage to touch a couple, so cute and slimy!

But my thoughts drift back to the sharks. It’s like when you go to a concert and have no patience for any of the supporting acts.

Where are they? I wanna touch one dammit!!

The Paranoia

With Mrs. S and my other boat fellows happily swimming with the stingrays, I separate myself from the pack.

I start swimming in the opposite direction in search of sharks.

AHA!!!!! I see a little pack of 6-7 baby sharks ahead!

Somehow, I transform myself into a fearless amazon of the sea – I have never swum so fast in my life, let alone TOWARDS a pack of sharks.

With my Fins working frantically, I am determined to integrate the pack.

Let me nurse you baby sharks!!

NOOOOP they swim away again!!!

Swimming further and further away from the group I am running after those sharks as if they are newly hatched chickens.

Refusing to let go

By that point, all logic has gone out the window.

I hear frantic voices- ”Come back you crazy Greek!! ” scream the tour guide and Mrs. S.

If you know me at all, telling me not to do something is a foolproof way of getting me to actually DO IT.

There’s no stopping me now. I’m going to pet these sharks and no one is going to stop me!

I continue my frantic chase and FINALLY manage to get close to a shark swimming alone.

I get close, really close – FINALLY VICTORY!!

Honestly, I am in awe of this nurse shark, the size of it, its strength,  the tail, and the fin that I’ve only ever seen in movies.

It’s always moving, never quite staying still, always on high alert. I almost stop breathing taking it all in. Amazing!!

Camera at the ready and about a foot away from this beauty, I steady myself for the Instagram photo OF MY LIFE…..

but off it swims AGAIN leaving nothing but the ocean and a swirl of sand in its wake.

The Defeat

”This isn’t going to happen is it” – My brain is reluctantly processing this.

I come up for air, utterly exhausted, and realize I am so far away from the boat. I also realize the sea is empty.

There is just me…and dozens of…sharks?

Suddenly my obsession with petting them seizes. Better cut my losses and get out alive!

Accepting defeat, I quickly start swimming back to join the others, who are already eating lunch on the boat.

Live entertainment was of course provided by yours truly!

Mrs S loses it – ”Tia you could have died! No one actually runs after sharks!!”

Feeling like a moody scorned child I reply ”But I really wanted to pet them!!”

The whole boat bursts into fits of laughter and off we go to the safety on Ambergris Caye.

I came. I saw…but I did NOT conquer.

Unfortunately, I did NOT pet the damn sharks. Because apparently…. sharks are shy. Go figure !!

And this guys, is how i switched up the roles and ended up chasing down sharks in Belize in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.

In this article, I will be sharing the story about the massive spider in Bali…and the awkward silence around the table when I said I managed to kill it. Oops.

And we all need a bit of a laugh in our lives so I am so glad you are loving this series!

Contrary to popular belief, I am not always well put together, and I am often clumsy and unladylike!

So keep reading about my experience with a mammoth spider in Bali, and let’s all laugh at my expense!

Side Note

The title was going to be ”The one when we killed someone’s pet in Bali” until I realized how WRONG that sounded.

I also had a mental image of police barging in my house and arresting me for murdering someone’s pet!

That’s not to say that I only consider cats and dogs to be pets, or that huge furry spiders can’t be pets. To each their own, right?

But in my defense, I didn’t have a clue and thank the Lord the spider wasn’t anyone’s actual pet.

Short travel stories – The Arrival

So we arrived in Bali on a hot, and humid, afternoon. After traveling by myself for 19 hours, my brain was fuzzy and jet-lagged!

A little while later we entered the best villa I have stayed in all my travels – the majestic, utterly gorgeous Villa Josie.

Now, for this story let me just say the place was to die for!

So much so- that if Bali hadn’t completely stolen my heart, I could have happily stayed indoors for the entire trip.

Short Travel Stories – Day 1- The first encounter

We soon settled into our huge rooms and my friend Chloe and I decided to share a room so we can pajama party our way through the whole trip. #goals.

The bathroom, tub, and shower were all outdoors surrounded by the garden, etc.

I walked into the space to wash my face and THERE IT WAS.

Casually chilling in the bathroom, a huge, black, furry long-legged spider.

I’ve never seen a spider this big, it had a body the size of my palm!!

Although I have a phobia of most things that crawl (thanks Mum) traveling has made me a lot more tolerant to the creepy crawlies.

I thought- ”It’s an outdoor bathroom it’ll go away if I make noise”.

Cue me stomping my feet like a crazed goat to get it to run off.

And It did! Hurrah!!

Went to bed feeling like a fearless boss lady and didn’t think of it again.

Short Travel Stories – Day 2. Well hello spider, back again?

After a full day of Bali exploring, I was desperate for a shower.

The humidity in Bali doesn’t play around!

So I Leisurely walk in the outdoor shower, lather my hair, and theeeeere it was again.

In the shower, next to my goddamn foot. Bloody hell.

The screams were real guys.

There’s me naked, shampoo in my eyes and screaming at the top of my lungs.

On top of my screams, the dog Is barking, and the gardener on the other side of the fence is inquiring ”Is it a snake Miss?”. Jesus Christ, there are SNAKES TOO?

With all the commotion, you would think the spider would panic and run away.

But…Nop!!

It sat there, soaked wet from the shower and unapologetically unphased by my hysterics.

We both stood there, frozen waiting for the other to make a power move.

Suddenly it decides to wander off into the garden.

Informing Chloe (who has arachnophobia) of the invader, we ask our other friend Megan if she had any visitors in her room.

No, she says, all clear on my end. We laugh and agree that the things you are scared of, follow you the most.

Off to bed, we go, Bali awaits in the am!

Short Travel Stories – Day 3. Hello Darkness, my old friend.

We had spent the day beaching. 

We ended the day by watching the most beautiful Balinese sacred ceremony of chanting and offerings to the Gods as the sun was setting on the beach.

Magical!

We arrived home feeling spiritual, content, and VERY Zen.

As a result, we decided to dine at home and relax.

Chloe and I enter our room and THEEEERE IT IS AGAIN.

Only this time, it’s inside the room.

It somehow sneaked past the slide doors and is now Chilling.

On the wall. In our frigging room.

We both stand there, in utter silence and fear.

”Chloe, how the heck are we getting this out?”

She screeches ”Tia I haven’t a clue, but I am not sleeping with that in the room!!”

There was no man in sight, ( why are they always absent when you need them though?) and Chloe was in deep arachnophobia panic mode.

So I decided to reluctantly be the brave woman of the evening.

I take a couple of steps closer to open the slide doors so it can get out.

The furry monster panics, JUMPS ON the bed and runs like crazy underneath the bed.

I didn’t know they could jump! And let’s be honest, WHY can they jump?

Chloe witnesses the infamous jump and promptly loses her mind.

By this point, I make the sudden realization that I might be forced to kill this thing before she passes out on me.

”Tia if this thing crawls on my face while I’m sleeping I will DIE! Please kill it!!”

Bear in mind I have never killed anything before. Sure, I’ve swatted away the occasional annoying fly.

But they are called creepy crawlers for a reason, and I respectfully stay away!

Short Travel Stories – The Attack

Sweating profusely, I grab a flip flop and steady myself.

”I’m a big girl now, I can do this”– I thought. I couldn’t.

It took the better part of half an hour and every time I got closer I freaked out by the size of it and backed down again.

Whyyyy couldn’t it just go away!

The dog comes in, and we are screaming like we are in a medieval battle.

Megan is taking photos, Chloe is screaming ”Kill it, Tia, Kill it!” and all I can think of is ”How the heck did I get into this again?!”

In a final dramatic climax, the furry beast jumps again and I make my move.

POW! goes the flip flop and bye-bye Furry Beast.

I am telling you, I was sweating as if I had just run a half marathon. I have no idea how other people can deal with pests in such a calm and collected manner.

My throat was hoarse, my hands were shaking and I was never wearing that damn flip flop again.

I’ll tell you one thing – I was NOT feeling spiritual or Zen anymore.

The Awkward moment

An hour later, clean and definitely calmer, we sit down to dinner with our host, the fabulous Loretta.

So how was your day girls? she asks.

Well, we had an invader, I say! We were forced to kill this huge spider that was on our bed it was so awful!”

Ooohhh Henry!” she says

Dear God….. Who. Is. Henry …… – all 3 of us ask. I am practically choking at my food.

”Our resident spider! It’s been here since I first built this Villa and it’s taken a liking to your bedroom Tia, it’s always in there!!”

Silence at the table.

Red-faced and in shock, I clear my throat and take responsibility.

”Loretta .. we killed him, we killed Henry! We didn’t know, we panicked!”

She laughs, sips her champagne, and says ” Don’t be ridiculous darling, this is Bali! Another one will soon find its way in!”

And that folks, is how I killed the resident spider of the Villa Josie In Bali.

China, a culture shock favorite

Ahhhh China… how i love thee.

It’s like you stepped into a parallel universe.. one with millions of very tiny people.

Some of those, evidently like to strip and pee in public. (and hold impromptu karaoke sessions on The Great Wall of China, but let’s leave that for another story..).

In the entire trip, 90% of my China Picture Gallery is a culture shock!

So my trip to Beijing, China was my first long-distance Travel Adventure.

I had the best time, discovering the local side of Beijing! This became possible, because I visited my friend Chloe, who has been living in Beijing for over a decade.

I traveled the 19-hour journey alone and by the time I arrived in Beijing I was jet-lagged, exhausted, and thoroughly confused.

Where am I? What day is it? what time is it ?? and more importantly where is my bed ?!

First things first though, a quick bathroom visit to brush my teeth, wash my face and pretend the jet lag hasn’t officially kicked my arse.

China Experience – The Striptease

In the bathroom, I went, and off with my business.

I was standing in front of the sink, with my toothbrush in my hands when two Chinese women waltzed in chatting to each other.

I was still standing there minding my own business when this lady – who I am crowning ”Naked Pee Lady” stood in the middle of the bathroom and proceeded to leisurely take off her clothes.

Every.Last.Bit.Of.Clothing.

Now I am a professional dancer folks, so I’m definitely used to seeing skin.

But the sheer casualness of just stripping in front of a good 25 strangers had my toothpaste dribbling down my chin.

There she is, casual, naked, and happy about it chatting away to her friend in the middle of a crowded airport bathroom and a lot of confused faces.

China Experience – The Squatting

I started thinking of various scenarios.

Is this a prank? Maybe she’s a bit crazy? The confusion was REAL.

But wait..Striping apparently wasn’t enough.

Because soon after, Naked Pee Lady proceeded to bend over and squat – yes squat! in front of her suitcase to find new items of clothing to wear.

Thank the Lord I thought – At least there are clothes in the horizon.

Meanwhile, Chloe rings: ”Tiaaaa have you arrived? I’m waiting at the airport! What’s taking so long?”

I whispered ” Babe I’m here, but I came to brush my teeth and there’s a naked lady squatting in my face!! ”

Chloe: ”Tia this is China, so to be honest I’d get out before she pees!”

”As IF she’s going to pee!” – I thought…BUT SHE DID.

In to a cubicle, she strolled.. butt naked.. and proceeded to pee (and chat) with the door wide open.

Then…. wait for it… She got up, turned around, and reached deep into the bottom of her throat for the deepest most ear-splitting SPIT I have ever heard.

If I wasn’t busy experiencing the culture shock of my entire life I would be secretly impressed!

China Experience – My Queue to Leave

A woman waiting in line tried to close the door on her – NO she screamed!

The idea of peeing and wiping with the door closed was clearly very foreign to her.

There are Women tutting, kids laughing, awkwardness all around and I’m stuck mid-air with a contouring brush in hand.

That’s when I realize; that’s my queue out of there. If she poops I’ll frigging DIE.

Out I hurried to join the rest of the fully dressed society and the now impatient Chloe.

We hadn’t even left the airport parking complex when we stopped at a pedestrian crossing to let a woman and her child cross.

She waved us to keep going, as her child was also busy peeing in the middle of the street.

My jaw dropped to the floor. You can’t be serious!!!

”Why is everyone peeing everywhere apart from the toilet? what the hell!!!!”

She laughed her gorgeous laugh and said ” Welcome to China babe, you are in for a ride!”

And that folks, is how the Naked Pee Lady became the first thing I ever think about when people ask… ” So Tia, how was China?”

It all started at the Ubud Monkey Forest

We arrived in Bali, Indonesia on a girls trip, feeling travel confident and totally ready for a blast.

And a blast we had indeed, with Bali providing everything we had hoped for and more.

The weather was fab, the wine was flowing, our villa was #instagoals and life was amazing.

Until we visited the Monkey Forest that is.

Ubud Monkey Forest is home to a variety of monkey species, especially Balinese Long-tailed Monkeys.

Here, the animals roam free with no cages, shows, or chains.

Oh YES! screamed the animal lover in me, to this we shall go!

Our driver dropped us off at the entrance and left us with a warning “do not carry with you any food or drink, the monkeys like to steal”. But I was too excited to give that statement much care – the monkeys were waiting!

In we entered and out came the iPhones to capture hundreds of seemingly cute monkeys, swinging from trees, eating bananas and carrying their teeny tiny monkey babies #squeeeel.

 The Ubud Monkey Forest Attack

After about an hour of roaming the forest, needing a break and some shade, we sat down on a bench.

We proceeded to prop our sunglasses on our heads and excitedly talk about how epic Bali was.

Suddenly, I hear a loud shriek of a monkey (in true Tarzan style) followed straight after by the sensation of two FEET landing my head.

That bastard monkey had landed on my head, ripped the sunglasses off my head, and triumphantly strutted off into the jungle with its Gucci prize.

Holy Shit! screamed the girls!

I tried to maintain my cool- after all ” I am an experienced traveler ” I thought!

We tried to approach the monkey in true ” Come heeeeree kitty” style.

Nop. Up the tree it climbed, clutching my glasses for dear life.

The Pandemonium

We then tried to bribe it with mangoes, and bananas but you guessed it, NOP.

Still not bothered- although it did create a pandemonium of other thieving monkeys eager for the fruit.

By this point, the whole park was involved!

Other guests are filming and laughing. Chloe and Megan are throwing fruit as bribes and screaming ”come here you thief!”.

The park keeper is trying to climb the tree, and in the middle of all this, is me shrieking ”nooooo don’t hurt the monkey!!!”

So where was the thieving monkey? Well, sitting comfortably and triumphantly at the top of a tree.

Simply chilling…chewing my beloved Gucci sunnies and completely unfazed by the pandemonium created below.

The Defeat

No prize was worth giving up the glasses. No fruit or snack was delicious enough! They were his, and that was that!

About 45 minutes later, we left the park wired, defeated, and definitely Gucci-less.

Monkey 1- Tia 0!

And THAT folks is how the monkey stole my glasses, in Ubud Monkey Forest!
