And no one talks about how hard it is to be able to resist tucking into a country’s cuisine – one of the things that make or break a travel experience!

After all, embarking on a journey to explore the rich cultures, landscapes, and cuisines of faraway lands is an exciting prospect for us all.

Because for most people, traveling is a chance to let loose, relax our normal eating and exercise habits, and enjoy our holiday. For most, a holiday is all about cocktails and a beach, fun nights out, and embracing local cuisine.

However, for those dealing with food allergies, especially individuals like me suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and lactose intolerance, the culinary adventure may come with its own set of challenges.

This blog post aims to provide valuable advice and tips to help travelers with food allergies like IBS and lactose intolerance safely enjoy their journies all over the world, particularly through Asia and Latin America.

Because in Europe, things are slightly easier. The more cosmopolitan a city, the more options there are – and trust me, you need options when you are traveling with food allergies!

But in regions like Asia and Latin America, things are a little more…complicated. And that’s when you need to be prepared.

So keep reading for my guide to traveling with food allergies and my top tips to keep you healthy and symptom-free as much as possible ( because you already know you will get symptoms at LEAST ONCE!)

What to expect from this article

This guide is NOT a medical article. It’s simply a guide based on my journey with IBS and lactose intolerance and ways I have found to manage it whilst traveling.

There are far more serious food allergies out there – like Celiac, Crohn’s, and Peanut allergies. If you suffer from those, then please visit this guide

Why is my IBS and Lactose Intolerance worse when I travel?

I have suffered from IBS and lactose intolerance for a little over 12 years now, and it is always at its worst when I travel or am extremely stressed. Travel disrupts your routine, including meal times and sleep patterns.

The body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm, can affect digestion and bowel habits. Symptoms are mostly stomach cramps, extreme bloating, changes in bowel movements, and weight gain.

My lactose intolerance gives me the same symptoms that also include cystic acne. One whiff of fresh cream or cheese and my skin flares up within 24 hours, and those cysts take weeks to disappear! Both are chronic conditions and YES I have tried everything for them!

1. Stop Symptoms on the plane

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) flare-ups during flights can be attributed to various factors related to the travel experience. Realistically, it can take days for symptoms to relax after a flare-up on the plane so it’s best if you can eliminate them before they begin!

Here are some common reasons why IBS symptoms might worsen during air travel with solutions to each trigger!

A. Stress and Anxiety: if flights stress you out, consider taking a sleeping aid or relaxant to calm you down when boarding. Stress is a known trigger for IBS symptoms, and travel can heighten stress levels.

Solution: Manage stress: Practice relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation, to reduce stress and anxiety.

B.Changes in Routine: Travel disrupts your routine, including meal times and sleep patterns. The body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm, can affect digestion and bowel habits.

Solution: Stick to your routine: Try to maintain regular meal and sleep schedules as much as possible.

Top tip for traveling on long-haul flights: Make sure the lengthier part of your flight is close to your normal sleeping hours so you can sleep on the plane!

C. Dehydration: Airplane cabins are often dry, and dehydration can exacerbate IBS symptoms. It’s essential to stay well-hydrated during flights by drinking water regularly.

Solution Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water before and during the flight.

D. Dietary Changes: Airline meals or snacks ALWAYS contain ingredients that trigger IBS symptoms. Additionally, individuals with IBS often have specific dietary requirements, and it can be challenging to find suitable food options while traveling.

Solution: Pack snacks: Bring along familiar, well-tolerated snacks to avoid triggering foods. Additionally, ordering a special meal, such as an allergen meal, gluten-free meal or non-lactose meal, among others, can be requested from your airline typically within 48 hours.

E. Pressure Changes: Changes in cabin pressure during takeoff and landing can affect the gastrointestinal system.

Solution: Medicate: I always take an activated charcoal tablet 20 minutes before takeoff which helps keep bloating to a minimum.

F. Physical Inactivity: Prolonged periods of sitting during a flight can contribute to constipation or discomfort for individuals with IBS. Lack of movement may slow down digestion and bowel motility.

Solution: Try to get up every 1-2 hours and stretch your legs and torso. Also, gently massage your belly in circular motions every few hours for a couple of minutes at a time!

G. Jet Lag: Crossing multiple time zones can disrupt the body’s internal clock, leading to jet lag. Changes in sleep patterns and meal times associated with jet lag may impact IBS symptoms.

2. Research and Plan Ahead

Before setting foot on foreign soil, research the local cuisine and common ingredients used in the countries you plan to visit. Familiarize yourself with the names of allergens in the local languages (difficult with ibs as there are dozens).

Alternatively, carry a translated card explaining your dietary restrictions. Apps like Google Translate can be handy for this purpose.

Knowing basic phrases related to your food allergies can be immensely helpful. Learn how to communicate phrases such as “I am allergic to [allergen]” and “Does this dish contain [allergen]?” in the local language. Locals appreciate the effort, and it helps ensure clear communication about your dietary needs.

3. Accommodations with Kitchen Facilities:

Consider booking accommodations that offer kitchen facilities. This provides you with the option to prepare simple meals using ingredients you trust.

Additionally, having a refrigerator can be beneficial for storing allergen-free snacks, even in a hotel room.

4. Pack Snacks

Always carry a supply of safe snacks for those moments when finding allergen-free options may be challenging.

Portable snacks like rice cakes, nuts, seeds, and fruits can be a lifesaver, especially during long journeys or in areas where allergen-free options are limited.

My backpack is always equipped with a few snacks and of course, water, in my favorite cooling travel bottle

5. Communication is Key

When dining out, don’t hesitate to communicate your dietary restrictions to the restaurant staff.

Be clear about your allergies, and ask questions about ingredients and preparation methods. Many chefs are willing to accommodate special dietary needs when informed in advance.

6. Book Restaurants in advance

The restaurant you will dine in is quite important. For example, onion and garlic are two of the major IBS sufferer’s typical ”No’s”. Therefore, I often opt for steakhouses and seafood restaurants with no sauces on my protein and something simple, like rice or a jacket potato. Simple meals just work best for me.

The better the restaurant, the more often you will find it fully booked, so book ahead to stay within your meal times and eat within your restrictions.

7. Seek Allergy-Friendly Restaurants

Utilize online resources, such as travel forums and apps, to find allergy-friendly restaurants in the area.

Many cities now have establishments that cater specifically to individuals with food allergies, offering a safe dining experience.

8. Explore Local Markets:

Visit local markets to explore fresh, unprocessed foods. Fruits, vegetables, and meats purchased directly from markets can be a safer option than processed or pre-packaged items, where hidden allergens might be present.

I stay away from most pre-packaged foods for years now (unless I’m intentionally saying ”screw it” I’m eating it, and Jesus can take the wheel)

9. Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is essential, especially in regions with different climates. However, be cautious about the source of water to avoid potential contamination.

Opt for bottled water always, or use water purification methods.

10. Connect with Local Allergy Groups:

Before your trip, contact local allergy support groups or communities. They can provide valuable insights, and recommendations, and even connect you with individuals who have similar dietary restrictions and travel experiences.

11. Control your portions

Remember to pay attention to portion sizes when traveling with food allergies. I am often tempted to over-eat and indulge whilst on vacation, but large portions are a huge trigger for IBS. It is far better to eat less and more often, to give your body the time to properly digest.

12. Find clever substitutes

As mentioned before, garlic and onions are usually big IBS triggers. But you don’t have to constantly deprive yourself of them!

So consider using garlic-infused oil for flavor instead of using garlic directly, as this can provide a taste without the high FODMAP content.

Coconut milk, is a great substitute for fresh cream in creamy sauces too, and the use of spices like paprika and oregano makes meat taste delicious without the need for onion powder.

13. Pack Medications

Because let’s be honest; we both know you will need it! I have yet to travel once and not have to deal with a flare-up, and I have done some serious traveling!

Ensure you have an ample supply of any necessary medications, such as antihistamines or digestive aids, in case of accidental exposure to allergens.

I always carry digestive enzymes and stomach cramps medication and I swear by activated charcoal tablets, which I take daily when I travel and they help immensely!

If your allergy requires a prescription then please carry it in the local language in case you need more or lose it.

List of Useful Medications for traveling with food allergies and IBS

Probiotics

• Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help maintain a healthy balance in the gut microbiota.

Peppermint Oil

• Peppermint oil has been studied for its potential to alleviate symptoms of IBS, particularly for reducing abdominal pain and bloating.

Fiber Supplements

• Soluble fiber supplements, such as psyllium husk, may help regulate bowel movements and relieve constipation in some individuals with IBS.

Digestive Enzymes

• I take these NOW digestive enzymes daily, and they are cheaper on Amazon! If your IBS, involves issues related to food digestion, you may benefit from digestive enzyme supplements. These enzymes can help break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

Melatonin

• Melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep, has been studied for its potential to improve sleep quality and reduce IBS symptoms. These melatonin gummies are delicious!

Calcium and Magnesium

• Calcium and magnesium supplements may help regulate bowel movements. However, it’s crucial to avoid excessive intake, as this can lead to side effects. Always consult with a healthcare professional before supplementing with minerals.

L-Glutamine

• L-glutamine is an amino acid that plays a role in maintaining the health of the intestinal lining. Some studies suggest that it may have a positive impact on symptoms of IBS as it protects the intestine barrier. I take them daily!

Lifestyle modifications, stress management, and dietary changes are also critical components of managing IBS.

Traveling with food allergies and IBS in Asia

Individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) may have different triggers and sensitivities, so there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to how they tolerate Asian cuisine. However, here are some general considerations:

Foods to avoid eating in Asia

1. Spices and Heat: Some people with IBS find that spicy foods, common in many Asian cuisines, can exacerbate symptoms. Dishes with chili peppers, garlic, and onions are often triggering. However, not everyone with IBS is sensitive to spice, so it varies from person to person.
2. Garlic and Onions: Certain compounds in garlic and onions, such as fructans, can trigger IBS symptoms in some individuals. Many Asian dishes include these ingredients, so people with IBS might need to choose dishes without them or request modifications.
3. FODMAPs: Some Asian ingredients can be high in FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols), which are types of carbohydrates that can be poorly absorbed in the small intestine and may trigger IBS symptoms.
4. Portion Size and Greasiness: Large portion sizes or greasy foods might be problematic for some IBS sufferers. Asian cuisines often include family-style servings, so individuals may need to be mindful of portion sizes.

IBS-friendly meals in Asia:

Here are some relatively plain and simple Asian dishes that might be gentler on the digestive system and could be considered by individuals with IBS:

1. Steamed Rice with Grilled meat,fish or tofu: Use minimal seasoning or opt for plain soy sauce in moderation.
2. Miso Soup: Miso soup is a traditional Japanese dish made with fermented soybean paste, seaweed, and tofu. The broth is often light and can be soothing for the stomach. It’s essential to check for added ingredients that might trigger IBS symptoms.
3. Sushi with Simple Ingredients: Sushi rolls with plain rice, fish and seaweed can be a good option. Opt for low-FODMAP options if you are sensitive to certain carbohydrates.
4. Plain Noodles with Light Broth: Rice noodles or plain wheat noodles with a simple broth can be easier on the stomach. And Pho is delicious, so you are in luck!
5. Stir-Fried Vegetables with Plain Protein: Stir-fried vegetables with well-cooked chicken, shrimp, or tofu can be a lighter option. Minimize the use of garlic and onions, or consider using garlic-infused oil for flavor.
6. Congee (Rice Porridge): Congee is a rice porridge in a light broth.It is easily digestible and can be customized with well-cooked protein and simple seasonings.

Some individuals with IBS may find that they can enjoy certain Asian dishes without triggering symptoms, while others may need to be more cautious and selective. Traveling with food allergies – Latin America

Similar to Asian cuisine, the tolerability of food in Latin America for individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can vary based on individual sensitivities and triggers. Latin American cuisine is diverse, with each region having its own unique flavors and ingredients.

Foods to Avoid in Latin America

1. Spices and Seasonings: Latin American cuisine often includes a variety of spices and seasonings. Some individuals with IBS may be sensitive to spicy foods or certain seasonings, so it’s important to be mindful of these ingredients.
2. Beans and Legumes: Beans and legumes are commonly used in Latin American dishes. They are high in fiber and can be sources of fermentable carbohydrates, which may be problematic for some people with IBS, especially those sensitive to FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols).
3. Onions and Garlic: Like in many cuisines, onions and garlic are frequently used in Latin American cooking. These ingredients contain compounds that can be triggers for IBS symptoms, especially for those sensitive to fructans.
4. Maize and Corn Products: Corn-based products, such as tortillas and cornmeal, are staples in Latin American diets. These can be well-tolerated by some individuals, but others may find that they contribute to symptoms.
5. Spiced Meats and Seafood: Grilled meats and seafood are common in Latin American cuisine and can be well-tolerated by many individuals with IBS. However, heavily spiced or marinated meats may pose a challenge for some.
6. Dairy: Some Latin American dishes may include dairy products. Individuals who are lactose intolerant or sensitive to dairy may need to choose dishes without dairy or opt for lactose-free alternatives.

IBS-friendly meals in Latin America

Creating low-FODMAP meals in Latin America can involve making modifications to traditional recipes to accommodate specific dietary needs. Here are a few ideas for low-FODMAP meals inspired by Latin American cuisine:

1. Grilled Chicken Tacos:Use corn tortillas (ensure they contain only corn and water).Grill chicken with simple spices like cumin, paprika, and oregano.Top with shredded lettuce, tomatoes (without seeds), and a small amount of lactose-free cheese.
2. Quinoa Salad with Shrimp: Quinoa, tossed with grilled shrimp, bell peppers, cucumbers (without seeds), and a simple dressing made with olive oil and lemon juice.Delicious, low-fodmap, and IBS-friendly!
3. Chicken and Vegetable Skewers: Marinate chicken pieces with olive oil, garlic-infused oil, and oregano. Skewer the chicken with low-FODMAP vegetables like zucchini, cherry tomatoes, and bell peppers.
4. Baked Fish with Plantains: Bake white fish with plantains, which are typically well-tolerated in moderate amounts.
5. Cilantro Lime Rice Bowl: Plain white rice, topped with grilled chicken, cilantro, lime and vegetables such as bell peppers and carrots.
6. Turkey and Spinach Stuffed Peppers: I am Greek after all so this is my go-to! Stuffed bell peppers with ground turkey, rice, spinach, and spices.
7. Pork Tenderloin with Pineapple Salsa: Grilled pork tenderloin with a simple spice rub, topped with salsa made from diced pineapple, bell peppers, and a touch of lime.

Conclusion

By researching, learning local phrases, and being proactive in your approach, you can savor the flavors of Asia and Latin America without compromising your health.

Where is Belize?

Central America! I found Belize on a little corner on the Eastern coast of Central America.

It is surrounded by Caribbean Sea shorelines to the east and dense jungle to the west.

Belize is neighboring Honduras and El Salvador and is only a two-hour flight from Miami.

What language is spoken in Belize?

English! In fact, it is the only country in Central America that has English as its official language.

This is because Belize used to be an English colony known as British Honduras.

Other languages spoken are Spanish and Creole.

What is the Belizean Currency?

Belize Dollar! 2 Belize dollars equal 1 American dollar which equals 0.90 cents in Euros.

The prices, in general, are cheap, meaning your Belize Holidays can stretch for longer!

Do we need visas to plan our Belize Holidays?

Not anymore!! As of July 2nd, 2019, Cypriot passport holders do not need a visa to Belize.

The same applies to the US, UK, and Canadian passport holders.

Make sure your passport is valid for another 6 months before  This detailed visa guide is great! The Visa is valid for 1 month only.

Please be advised that if you are traveling through America, you will need a US visa.

This is valid also for travelers on transfer flights flying through the USA. Travel Pass can take care of the Us Visa for you!

Are there Belize Diseases? Information on Vaccinations for Belize

Yes! Like all countries in Asia and Latin/Central America- paradise comes hand in hand with its small risks.

For most travelers, Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid shots are enough. Hep A and Typhoid are spread by food and water and a tetanus shot is a good idea in case of any scrapes and cuts with infected objects.

Mosquitoes are also highly dangerous in Belize and are carrying a large array of diseases. My advice is better to be safe than sorry.

You wouldn’t want to ruin your Belize Holidays. This guide on all diseases and vaccinations is very helpful! 

TIP: Hep A shots are done in two doses and must be started a minimum of 2 weeks prior to your departure. Cypriots can have them for free at the Old Nicosia Hospital. 

What is the Capital City of Belize?

Contrary to popular belief, the capital is Belmopan City, which was only created in 1970.

The Capital used to be the country’s largest city – Belize City.  Following the extensive damage by Hurricane, Hattie in 1961 the capital was changed.

Is Belize safe?

I never felt unsafe or had anything bad happen to me while in Belize. However, in Belize City especially, poverty and violence are common occurrences.

There is also a high rate of unemployment as well as a high rate of HIV/AIDS.

The Mexican and South American drug trade as well as gang violence is also evident in cities like Belize City.

I would advise you to skip Belize City, and focus on the other incredible areas and islands this country has to offer – so that you can see Belize for the true wonder it really is!

What is the best airport to fly to Belize?

The Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (PGIA), is the primary international airport of Belize and is located only 10 miles from Belize City.

From there, you can fly (30 mins) to any island or take a ferry boat. (1-2 hours) 

Tip: be careful of scams!!!! They tried to charge me 70 euros at the ticket office (over double the price).

Buying tickets online could potentially be a far better option! Don’t let scammers ruin your Belize Holidays 🙂

Belizean Food – What food is Belize known for?

Yeah, you guessed it; rice and beans! 

A true Caribbean classic, this is the most common dish you will encounter in the country, and will almost always accompany other popular dishes such as stewed chicken, fried plantain (another Caribbean favorite), and other Latin American favorites like tamales and chi mole.

 What is even more delicious in Belize though, is the seafood. Eat as much of it as you can, as often as you can.

I had the best lobster of my life on a beach hut on an island of Belize!

Can you drink the water in Belize?

No, it is not. We simply do not have the antibodies for it!

Tap water in Belize is not purified water; it’s treated water: It is filtered and has chlorine in it.

Locals have no issue with it, but for people who are new there, an upset stomach and diarrhea as common occurrences.

You can also get sick from drinking ice that isn’t made with purified water as brushing your teeth with tap water.

All good hotels have purified drinking water for guests and you can easily buy bottled water for when you are out and about.

Is alcohol expensive in Belize?

Beer and local run are relatively cheap (3 euros), but imported spirits and wines can be quite expensive!

If you are an alcohol lover that wants to save some money, Belize is one of the only countries in the world that offers Duty-Free Arrivals at the airport and the prices there are 50% cheaper!

Where should I stay to make the most of my Belize Holidays?

I would advise you to stay in one of the many, gorgeous islands (over 450) – with my two favorites being the lively Ambergris Caye and the chilled-out Caye Caulker.

I wouldn’t advise you to stay in Belize city unless you are not a fan of the sea; although I have to say Belize City does have some lovely restaurants!

But if you do want the island experience then go to the islands straight away as taking ferries daily would end up costing quite a bit!

Is Belize expensive? How much money should I take with me?

One of the least expensive countries in the Caribbean, Belize is not considered expensive.

This all depends of course on how extravagant you wish your holidays to be and what sort of activities you like to do!

I put aside 500 euros for my 7 days in Belize, and I remember I still had some money left over when I continued on to Costa Rica!

With that money, I got up to a lot of activities and ate a mixture of local food, seafood, and international restaurant food, with a small amount of alcohol (I’m not a fan!)

Do I need a plug adapter for smooth Belize Holidays?

You definitely do! Belize uses 110 volts, 60 cycle electricity, with 2 pronged flat type plugs (same as the US) so US travelers are good to go!

Unless you or your gadgets are from the US then you will need a good power adapter. 

What is the info on the Belize Climate?

A country with a subtropical climate – it is supposed to have its rainy season between the months of June and November.

I, however, spent time there in July and only saw rain once! It was hot (32 degrees) and sunny and utterly gorgeous- and the prices are cheaper for that time too 🙂

The best time (and the most expensive) to visit Belize is from late November to mid-April, during the country’s dry season.

The temps are around 30 degrees at that time.  May, June, and the beginning of July are cheaper months, and quite good as the rain is nowhere near as frequent as August and September.

Belize – Central America or the Caribbean?

Where is Belize?

With one foot in the Central American jungles and the other in the Caribbean Sea, little Belize packs a serious punch.

With its exotic islands, rich Caribbean culture, amazing local food, fresh seafood, and a plethora of activities.

My time there was magical and I fell in love with this country,! It feels much less Latin American and much more like a Caribbean paradise!

Tip: Belize can easily be combined with a vacation in the US.

Personally, I combined NYC, Miami, Belize, Honduras, and Costa Rica on a 1-month long trip. Alternatively, you can combine it with another Caribbean island Destination.

1. It is an English Speaking Country – Belize Fun Facts

Belize is the only country in Central America that has English as its official language instead of Spanish.

This is because Belize was a British Colony until 1964 when it was granted its independence.

The name then settled to Belize rather than the ”British Honduras” as it was previously known.

However, because the nation has such a diverse culture, more than 90% of the population can read, write and speak three languages: English, Spanish, and Creole.

2. You get a lot for your buck! – Belize Currency

The Currency of Belize is the Belize Dollar which holds to 2 Belize dollars = 1 US dollar. So you get quite a lot for your buck!

3. It is packed with Tropical Islands – Things to Do in Belize

Belize has a total of 450 islands called ”Cayes” – pronounced ”keys”.

In these little paradisaical islands, you can spend your day kayaking, sunbathing, and windsurfing.

You should also indulge in paddleboarding, swimming, or fishing.

Combine this with delicious Belizean food: little barbecue beach huts that cook freshly caught lobster and a variety of seafood right in front of your eyes and you’ve got THE perfect tropical vacation.

The most popular islands are the vibrant and energetic Ambergris Caye and the laid-back Caye Caulker that I personally fell in love with!

Tobacco Caye, Laughing Bird Caye, and St Georges Caye are just three of the many other islands Belize has to offer.

4. It’s a small country, with a hell of a punch!

A relatively small country- Belize only has 300,000 inhabitants. In fact, it has the Lowest Population Density In Central America.

This means fewer crowds and more incredible landscapes for all types of travelers!

5. Belize is the only Jaguar Reserve in the world.

Belize is the only country in the world with a sanctuary to preserve jaguars and pumas as well as other big cats reserves in the world.

This protected area is the Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Preserve.

6. The second-largest barrier reef in the world -Things to Do in Belize

The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest Barrier Reef in the World – after Australia of course. Snorkeling and diving here are simply out of this world!

The marine life is rich and there are many diving and snorkeling sites to explore!

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is home to over 400 species of fish and an estimated 200 tiny islands – a pure paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers.

In Belize, you swim through translucent seas, a kaleidoscope of coral, fish, whale sharks, and turtles.

Paradise.

7. It is home of the ”Great Blue Hole” – A UNESCO Heritage Site.

Belize is home to the ”Great Blue Hole” – a true natural wonder and the biggest sinkhole in the world.

The Great Blue Hole is among the top 5 diving spots in the world and for good reason.

It is essentially a giant marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize, with a rounded shape and a depth of over 124m.

A diving opportunity for experienced divers only (Must have a minimum of 24 dives under your belt).

There, you can witness a dark cave with impressive stalactites as well as Caribbean Reef Sharks and sometimes bull and hammerhead sharks.

I am going straight back to Belize as soon as I have my 24 dives under my belt as this is an experience I refuse to miss out on!

Definitely of the top things to do in Belize if you are a diver!

Tip: You can also snorkel around the perimeter of the hole, so not having a diving diploma shouldn’t hold you back from this incredible wonder of nature!

8. Screaming Monkeys and Exotic Wildlife-  Belize Fun Facts

Belize is simply crawling with wildlife!

There are crocodiles, jaguars, parrots, and Black Howler Monkeys- who are the loudest monkey species in the world! When they scream, the whole jungle echoes!

The snakes are pretty awesome too!

9. There are no street lights in Belize

There are no street lights in Belize – yep you heard it!!

The whole country is unspoiled jungle and rainforest and speed control is regulated by road bumps instead of street lights.

10. Belize Has More Than 900 Mayan Ruins– Belize Fun Facts

Belize was previously the capital of the Ancient Maya Empire that stretched for over a thousand miles and is now known as Central America.

Here, you have the opportunity to explore over 900 different Maya Ruins and sacred sites.

Explore excavated tombs and intricate hieroglyphs and go down into natural caves to where the Maya kings performed rituals sacrifice

11. Hello Narcos! Gang violence and drug cartels

The largest city in Belize is Belize City – an area where poverty and violence are common occurrences. There is also a high rate of unemployment as well as a high rate of HIV/AIDS.

The Mexican and South American drug trade as well as gang violence is also evident in cities like Belize City.

I felt very safe in Belize, however, I do feel that I should be honest in both the pros and the cons of the country.

I would advise you to skip Belize City, and focus on the other incredible areas and islands this country has to offer – so that you can see Belize for the true wonder it really is!

12. A virtual paradise for Bird lovers

Rich in the unspoiled jungle, Belize is home to a plethora of wildlife sanctuaries, parks, and protected areas for all types of wildlife.

It is also home to a bird lover’s paradise and a great thing to add to your things to do in Belize list.

Over 500 bird species are waiting for you to observe, in the forest, lagoons, and along the river.

No matter where you are in Belize, just look up, and you’ll enjoy the sight of these exotic winged creatures.

13. The Activities are wild!

Adventurous and tropical, Belize is full of surprises!

For example, you can canoe or tube through dark undercover caves and river systems. It was eerie and absolutely brilliant!.

Alternatively, you can zip-line through the jungle, go horseback riding on an empty beach or hike the numerous national parks.

Belize is definitely ideal for active and adventurous travelers!

14. Easy going climate

Belize is a country with a subtropical climate. Basically, it is supposed to have its rainy season between the months of June and November.

I, however, spent 2 weeks there in July and didn’t see a drop of rain!

It was hot and sunny and utterly gorgeous- and the prices are cheaper for that time too 🙂

15. There is No Phone Signal For Cyprus – Belize Tourist Information

Belize fun facts: People from Cyprus will have NO phone signal in Belize.

This is because Belize is still relatively undiscovered by Cypriots – therefore they have no deals with phone companies to cater to Cypriot tourists.

In fact, I think I am the first Cypriot to EVER set foot in Belize!

I personally loved not having a signal – as all the calls we take nowadays whilst on holiday depend on WI-FI (which works great) and that meant that I had my battery last 10x more!

16. It’s a favorite with expats

Belize may be small in size, but it continues to attract a million visitors per year and is increasingly becoming a second home to ex-pats who are choosing to retire here and for those who are buying vacation homes.

17. Gibnut, A Rodent, Is eaten In Belize

Gibnut, is a type of rodent, and believe it or not, it is a favorite type of meat eaten in Belize.

It was even served to Queen Elizabeth, which gave it its nickname, “the royal rat.”

Honestly, I don’t know how I feel about that, because Gibnut is served in stews, and Lord knows I had a lot of stews in Belize!!

18. Belize’s National Animal Is A Horse-Rhinoceros Mix

The national animal of Belize is a biological mix of a horse and a rhinoceros!

This animal is known as a tapir.

It actually looks like a giant Guinea pig, weighing over 500 pounds, and can swim too!

19. Marijuana Is Legal In Belize

As of 2017, it is legal for adults to have up to 10 grams of marijuana in their possession. They are allowed to smoke it on their own premises, or somebody else’s private premises with the owner’s permission.

20. Belize Is Fantastic For Chocolate Lovers

You can actually enjoy a tour of the entire chocolate-making process at the Toledo Cacao Fest.

Interestingly, the ancient Mayans invented hot chocolate, and it was used in many of their rituals.

Where is Belize?

I found Belize on a little corner on the Eastern coast of Central America – with Caribbean Sea shorelines to the east and dense jungle to the west.

An English-speaking country – with a distinctly Caribbean feel that blew my mind.

24 Belize Photos For The Ultimate Travel Inspiration

1. Postcard-perfect beaches

Hanging out in one of those on the beach should be on everyone’s bucket list, period.

2. Belize Photos – The insane views

Because this view is too breathtaking for my picture to do it justice! All the kayes ( islands) look like this, and it is straight up travel goals.

3. Discovering wild nature

There are snakes everywhere and have you ever held a wild one before? They are SO cute and leathery!

Make sure you see them ETHICALLY, and never ever fund a zoo visit.

4.Belize Photos – No shirt, no problem

In Belize, no one cares about appearances -it’s chilled-out vibes everywhere you go!

And my inner island child couldn’t love this motto anymore!

5. The snorkeling will leave you breathless.

Dive and snorkel the Caribbean sea and you will remember this post!

The massive Belize Barrier Reef, is the second-largest in the world!

The Belize Barrier Reef System was first inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996

Dotted with hundreds of low-lying islands called cayes, it hosts rich marine life.

It really is a diver’s paradise!

6. Belize Photos – The crocodiles

Seeing wild crocodiles up close is not as frightening as you would expect.

And if you catch them sleeping in the sun they remain so utterly still – with open eyes and mouth- they look like a fake crocodile!

7. The nurse sharks

Because in Belize, you can swim with nurse sharks – and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life!

Nurse sharks are the most docile type of shark you can find, so of course I had to jump ( literally) at the chance!

Turns out they are shy, so I ended up chasing them around instead. Read up on that travel fail story here!

8. Belize Photos – The Crystal Clear Water

Because everyone should float in the most crystal clear water at least ONCE in their lives.

And if this picture isn’t the epitome of ”0 problems” then what is?

9. The gentle manta-pees

You can swim alongside manta-pees (that I like to call sea-cows) and they are the cutest and most shy animals I’ve ever encountered !!

I swam next to this little guy for a good half an hour!!

10.Belize Photos – The Lobster

Good God the lobster!

There is a beach hut on Caye Caulker that serves the absolute best lobster I have ever eaten.

And it was cooked in a little barbeque hut right on the edge of the water and served In tinfoil!

Indeed, sometimes less, really is more!

There is an abundance of lobsters in Belize, and they taste absolutely divine. They also cost next to nothing.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner? Yes, please!

11. The breathtaking Sunsets

Because the sunsets here will truly leave you breathless.

And is there anything than a cold cocktail whilst watching this incredible sunset on the other side of the world?

12. Belize Photos – The Maya Ruins

Belize’s jungle areas are home to Mayan ruins like Caracol, renowned for its towering pyramid.

Also and one seat to the very top gives you views of Honduras and El Salvador Borders.

13. The Belize Blue Hole

The Great Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 70 km (43 mi) from the mainland and Belize City. The hole is circular in shape, 318 m (1,043 ft) across and 124 m (407 ft) deep.

Researchers have suggested that this massive submarine sinkhole was originally formed during the last glacial period as a limestone cave when the sea levels were lower. However, the cave was later flooded when the sea began to rise, eventually resulting in the formation of a circular hole

14. Ziplining through the jungle

You seriously need to try ziplining at least once in your life!

And when the view is nothing but thick jungle…it’s a yes from me!

15. The Swordfish

Because Swordfish should always be eaten off a stick and cooked in a beach hut in the middle of the ocean!

Because the sea is filled with stingrays and swimming with them was a dream come true!!

17. The dark caves

You can go and explore dark underwater caves and shallow lagoons for a fraction of what you would pay elsewhere!

The dark caves were an excellent, creepy, unforgettable experience!

16. The Caribbean vibe

Because you will lose your minds over the Caribbean side, and dragging you out of that sea is gonna be a problem!

19. Street music and laid back atmosphere

Music doesn’t need to be translated, it only needs to be felt!

Nothing more powerful than emerging yourselves in local culture through music! So much fun!

20. The Floating Bars

A bar in the middle of the ocean is NEVER a bad idea…right?

This is exactly the type or energy and excessiveness I require in all my travels!

21. Beach Deco

Because waking up to something this cute every day is a necessity, at least once in your life …!

22. Fresh Coconuts

Because the coconuts are to die for and are picked fresh from trees every day!

You will find them everywhere!

23. The sense of humor

I seriously feel like people would pay more attention to road signs if they were as clever as this one!

And yes, there are a lot of iguanas!

24. Carefree Life

Because life in Belize is carefree… And this picture is so iconic of Belize, that it became the cover photo of this entire travel website!

In this article, I am rounding up all the must- do’s in this fabulous city – the city of lights!

Plan your time strategically, ignore the fact that you’ll be tired and jet-lagged as hell and you will get a real New York flavor in a mere 24 hours. Let’s get ready for a magnificent Day in New York!

New York City comprises 5 boroughs sitting where the Hudson River meets the Atlantic Ocean.

At its core is Manhattan, a densely populated borough that’s among the world’s major commercial, financial and cultural centers.

Its iconic sites include skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building and sprawling Central Park. Broadway theater is staged in neon-lit Times Square.

1. Early Wake-up – its time for breakfast in New York!

Nothing better than a fresh out the oven bagel to go, with the classic American cream cheese spread.  Add a jumbo-sized coffee (American portions are frightening) and you are set!

Alternatively, waffles, bacon and maple syrup will have you singing “I Love New York” in no time!  

Equipped with carbs and caffeine, proceed to find the nearest metro and get yourself a metro card for the day – each ride costs 2-3 dollars.  

2. Start your day with the best view of NYC 

  Head up to the Rockefeller center and head 70 stories up, to the Top of the Rock observation deck. It offers some of the best views in the city, stretching up to 50 km!

Once you are up there, have fun trying to recognize the 5 boroughs of New York, Central Park, and the Empire State Building!b

Hours: Sunday–Saturday 8:00am – Midnight Last elevator up at 11:00pm  

3. A bit of culture on 5th Avenue and the Upper East Side

  Walk up 5th Avenue, take in the NY vibes and colors and pretend you are a bonafide cast member of Sex and the City or better yet, a true Audrey Hephurd in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

While in 5th Avenue, visit St Patrick’s Cathedral and St Thomas Episcopal Church, and be sure to pop into the Museum of Modern Art which is just around the corner. There you will see works from Picasso, Dali, and Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

4. 57th street glamour and a NY sugar high

 Window shop the displays at Harry Winston, Tiffany & Co, and Bergdorf Goodman and head into the little secret food stall for a little sugar fix, like the fresh doughnuts from Doughnuttery. (YUM)

Location: 425 West 15th Street New York, NY 10011​  

Times: Mon-Sat 8:30 am – 9 pm and Sunday 8:30 am – 8 pm  

5. Experience the Upper West Side and Central Park

You cannot miss Central Park! Whether you choose to walk, bike or boat through it, my ”A day in New York” Article would be incomplete without it!

You can rent a rowboat for $15 an hour, or a bike with a $ 12-day pass that enables you unlimited 30-minute rides.

Central Park isn’t just another beautiful park – Wide open spaces, shady trees, ponds and lakes surrounded by the beautiful buildings that line the park’s perimeter which, by the way, is 4023 m long.

In the winter, you can ice skate on the lake that freezes over!

If you are feeling peckish, grab a Pastrami Sandwich and have a little picnic at the park!

6. Hello Lower Manhattan And Hello Lady Liberty

  I will remember the Statue of Liberty for two things: Firstly for being a pain in the butt to get there, and secondly for being the place where i met THE rudest human I’ve ever encountered in my life!

Good old Lady Liberty is a New York staple though and definitely one to squeeze in if your time and energy permits. I mean… a day in New York without the Statue of Liberty just doesn’t sound right!

Statue oF Liberty Tips 

Tip 1: Get the short cruise as everything is always delayed and avoid booking to also see Ellis Island if you are pressed for time! There are a variety of tickets to choose from with the cheapest ones costing $19 and $9 for children.

Tip 2: If you aren’t particularly bothered with the Statue of Liberty (i personally loved seeing it!) you can opt for a bus tour instead.

Choose from double-Decker or hop-on-hop-off buses that really cover a lot of ground and sights. Or go for a themed bus tour like various movie and film sights tours..heck there is even a pizza bus tour !!  

7. Visit the 9/11 Memorial Site and Museum

  Truly beautiful and humbling to see, the 9/11 Memorial Site is located in a spacious wide-open plaza in Lower Manhattan.

This memorial is dedicated to the lost lives of the 9/11 attack and it is an essential feature of New York City. Its massive twin fountains are an architectural wonder and a real must-see.

The memorial is free to visit. Opening Times: Open Daily 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.  

Located on the memorial ground is the National September 11th Museum, which documents the tragic events of 9/11 through artifacts, documents, and films.  

Info: There is a cost of $24 to $39 to enter the museum but it is included for free with the purchase of most tourist passes.

Hours: Open Daily – Sunday to Thursday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (6 p.m. last entry)

Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (7 p.m. last entry)  

8.Hungry bellies – New York Style

  When it’s time for dinner, stay in the 9/11 area and eat inside the Oculus Shopping Mall! Inside head for Eataly, a huge Italian food hall that features different restaurants concentrating on pizza, pasta and all things Italian.

Alternatively, you can eat at Hudson Eats in Brookfield Place. You can walk to the building from the underground walkway attached to the Oculus.

Here you’ll find lots of options from local food vendors like Mighty Quinn’s BBQ, Unami Burger, Cambodian Sandwiches and many more cultural fusions and fascinating eats.  

9. A day in New York – The Brooklyn Sights

Once in Brooklyn, enjoy ice cream on the Fulton Ferry Landing along with the view. Walk the famous Brooklyn Bridge, then head to the district of Dumbo, a post-industrial, post-art loft neighborhood, and a unique prelude to Brooklyn.

You can get to Dumbo by going under the bridges and following the signs. 

Take in the views of Manhattan from the ever-expanding and gorgeous Brooklyn Bridge Park.

10. Midtown New York and the Almighty Times Square

  Time for neon street city lights, masses of crowds, shopping, and traditional New York Cheesecake.

Times Square is a must! Its a rite of passage to NYC, a place every tourist experiences that ”Wow” moment in New York City. A day in New York should always finish with Times Square. Period. 

Countless shops (Hello Sephora and bye-bye to all sense of reason, logic, and budget). You will also find Food carts, World Famous Broadway shows, pulsing lights of towering digital billboards and the best cheesecake of your lives.

Its chaos, it’s mesmerizing, its a slice of New York madness. 

11. Drink the night away or soak up Broadway

Still going? Then consider watching a Broadway show to enjoy some of the best singing and dancing in the world, or if you are feeling cultural, bar crawl the numerous jazz and blues bars.

Additionally, If you want to explore the gay club scene, or dance the night away, NYC is THE place to be.

I mean, isn’t it everyone’s dream to swim with sharks and live to tell the tale?

The Dream

I always wanted to swim with Sharks.

The obvious goal was to swim with sharks without being eaten alive.

After a good few years of traveling, I finally plucked up the courage to face my fears and Swim with Sharks during my Central America trip to Belize.

The bestie (who today shall be named Mrs. S) didn’t need much persuading either – she’s on my own level of crazy!

So when I read up on Shark Ray Alley on Ambergris Caye in Belize I immediately booked the excursion and started mentally preparing.

By mentally preparing I mean following a set of steps. I always take every time I am phased with yet another epic travel fail:

Firstly, Whatever you do, do NOT tell mum. She will freak out regardless of your age and then blame you for premature aging.

Secondly, Tell as many people as you can either that you love them, or that you hate their guts. (in case you like, die).

And last but not least, take a deep breath, and go for it!

I did all 3 and I am so glad because these kinds of funny travel stories are my very own travel legacy. One that I will treasure forever and remember until my very last days.

Are there really sharks in Belize?

For many visitors to Belize, exploring the waters of the Caribbean Sea is on the top of their to-do list.

This is because it is renowned for an impressive variety of sharks, from the offshore Whale Sharks to Caribbean Reef Sharks, Silky, Bull, Tiger Sharks, and Hammerheads.

The Nurse sharks, however, are the type of shark you see the most of, and by far the friendliest of the bunch.

So when the opportunity came about to swim with Nurse Sharks I knew I’d found the right tour!

The reviews were amazing, and the pictures were awesome!

Ecstatic tourists were saying how they got to touch the sharks (apparently they feel like rough sandpaper).

So we booked those seats immediately! Hurrah!

The day finally came

 We ate lobster by a shack practically in the middle of the Caribbean Sea like it was our last meal on earth.

We went over every possible scenario of things going wrong.

I told her that if I die id like to be cremated and for people to wear white at my funeral. Honestly though, why am I so dramatic?

We armed ourselves with underwater cameras and into the boat we went.

Upon arrival at Coral Gardens, the first destination, we quickly got into the water, with our guide.

O.M.G. Awesome!!!

No sharks here, but plenty of awesomeness all around! Giant turtles, colorful fish, and a shy and lazy Manatee that swan lazily next to me for ages!

Shark Ray Alley

Feeling like the real conquerors of the sea, we arrived at our second stop… the infamous Shark Ray Alley.

The sound of the engines alone immediately drew dozens of sharks and huge stingrays around the boat.

Brownish grey in color and some of them over six feet in size!!

There they were...swimming in circles around the boat. Hello ''Jaws'' flashbacks.
Damn you Steven Spielberg, you ruined an entire generation of kids! 

I took one look at my bestie and armed myself with courage. In reality, I wanted to scream “Good God in heaven”. I’m gonna die! But I am a firm believer in fake it till you make it, so I kept that one quiet haha.

Snorkel mask on (seriously no one looks attractive wearing those) I jumped into the water saying my last prayer.

The Hysteria

”GAAAAHHH!!! Something touched my foot!! ”

”I feel no pain but maybe I’m in shock?? Has a shark chopped it off?? ”

I frantically look down with the elegance of a crazed goat in search of floating limps. Nop, the foot is still attached.

A panic moment is in full swing, and I somehow forget to breathe. My mask escapes my face, there is water in my eyes and I am practically drowning my own damn self in shallow water. Classy Tia, classy.

”Calm down Tia” I whisper to myself. Fixing the mask, I dive underwater.

Mrs. S is there, loving it and frantically pointing at the sharks as if I have lost my sight and can’t actually see them right in front of my face.

”Holy S*** … Look at the size of them!!!”

Camera at the ready and shaking hands in full galore I start swimming to join the pack of 6 sharks circling the bottom of the ocean and eating fish bits thrown in by the boat.

But wait… Sensing my presence they quickly swim off.

What?!? Why are they leaving?!

The Confusion

I come up for air in full confusion.

The snorkel guide looks at them with the same adoration I look at my students when they finally master a correct grand plie.

”They are just a little shy,” he says.

HUH? Shy? The sharks… are SHY?

I quickly decide he hasn’t got a clue about sharks. Sharks are many things but surely shy isn’t one of them! 

For a while, I get preoccupied with the -MANY- stingrays all around my feet.

I manage to touch a couple, so cute and slimy!

But my thoughts drift back to the sharks. It’s like when you go to a concert and have no patience for any of the supporting acts.

Where are they? I wanna touch one dammit!!

The Paranoia

With Mrs. S and my other boat fellows happily swimming with the stingrays, I separate myself from the pack.

I start swimming in the opposite direction in search of sharks.

AHA!!!!! I see a little pack of 6-7 baby sharks ahead!

Somehow, I transform myself into a fearless amazon of the sea – I have never swum so fast in my life, let alone TOWARDS a pack of sharks.

With my Fins working frantically, I am determined to integrate the pack.

Let me nurse you baby sharks!!

NOOOOP they swim away again!!!

Swimming further and further away from the group I am running after those sharks as if they are newly hatched chickens.

Refusing to let go

By that point, all logic has gone out the window.

I hear frantic voices- ”Come back you crazy Greek!! ” scream the tour guide and Mrs. S.

If you know me at all, telling me not to do something is a foolproof way of getting me to actually DO IT.

There’s no stopping me now. I’m going to pet these sharks and no one is going to stop me!

I continue my frantic chase and FINALLY manage to get close to a shark swimming alone.

I get close, really close – FINALLY VICTORY!!

Honestly, I am in awe of this nurse shark, the size of it, its strength,  the tail, and the fin that I’ve only ever seen in movies.

It’s always moving, never quite staying still, always on high alert. I almost stop breathing taking it all in. Amazing!!

Camera at the ready and about a foot away from this beauty, I steady myself for the Instagram photo OF MY LIFE…..

but off it swims AGAIN leaving nothing but the ocean and a swirl of sand in its wake.

The Defeat

”This isn’t going to happen is it” – My brain is reluctantly processing this.

I come up for air, utterly exhausted, and realize I am so far away from the boat. I also realize the sea is empty.

There is just me…and dozens of…sharks?

Suddenly my obsession with petting them seizes. Better cut my losses and get out alive!

Accepting defeat, I quickly start swimming back to join the others, who are already eating lunch on the boat.

Live entertainment was of course provided by yours truly!

Mrs S loses it – ”Tia you could have died! No one actually runs after sharks!!”

Feeling like a moody scorned child I reply ”But I really wanted to pet them!!”

The whole boat bursts into fits of laughter and off we go to the safety on Ambergris Caye.

I came. I saw…but I did NOT conquer.

Unfortunately, I did NOT pet the damn sharks. Because apparently…. sharks are shy. Go figure !!

And this guys, is how i switched up the roles and ended up chasing down sharks in Belize in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.

Basic Information on Costa Rica

The Republic of Costa Rica is a country in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north, and the Caribbean Sea to the Northeast.

Panama is to the southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the Southwest, and Ecuador to the South.

Costa Rica is also one of the most eco-friendly countries in the world! 

What is Costa Rica famous for?

Though its capital, San Jose, is home to cultural institutions like the Pre-Colombian Gold Museum, Costa Rica is essentially known for its beaches, volcanoes, and biodiversity.

Roughly a quarter of its area is made up of protected jungle, teeming with wildlife including spider monkeys and Quetzalcoatl birds.

It’s tropical, it’s Eco-friendly….. and definitely travel goals!

I visited stunning Costa Rica for a mere 10 days as it was a trip combined with other American and Central American countries.

I would really love to go back and explore some more…!

Costa Rica Pura Vida – Which Coast Should I Visit?

This beautiful country is surrounded by both the Pacific and the Caribbean Coast.

Traveling around Costa Rica isn’t always easy and the country is not small either!

With so much to do and see in every region, most people prefer to stay in one general area.

The two coasts are quite different, so deciding really largely depends on your travel expectations and what you like to do.

Let’s break it down below!

The Pacific Side Of Costa Rica

This is a great area for you if you fancy high-end 5* hotels, swimming pools, WiFi, and air conditioning (yes, those are considered luxuries in Costa Rica!).

In my opinion, you can still find great bargains on this end falling right into my Affordable Luxury niche. 

Also, are you a surfing fan? Because surfing is one of the top reasons people visit Costa Rica.

In fact, the surf breaks tend to be counted among the best in the world.

It also boasts a large number of established surf breaks and countless surf shops where you can get all your gear.

This of course means, that the waters are a little on the rougher side and snorkeling isn’t really the best.

Lastly, The Pacific Coast is more developed therefore more expensive. It is considered to be one of the most expensive countries in Central America. Even so, I still found it cheap especially if you avoid the American chain restaurants and eat fresh local food!

The Caribbean Side of Costa Rica

The Caribbean offers smaller boutique hotels, eco-lodges, and hostels, along with private vacation rental homes. As a result, the Caribbean side tends to offer a quieter and less crowded experience.

Here, you will also find ideal coasts for water sports like kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving, with an abundance of reefs and clear, calm waters.

Budget-wise, the Caribbean Side is cheaper at the moment, but probably won’t stay this way for long.

I hope it continues to retain the gorgeous Afro-Caribbean vibe and authenticity!

Here, the foods are spicier, the music is louder and it’s chilled sleepy beach vibes all day long.

Weather-wise, the climate in the Caribbean has its own microclimate and tends to be slightly wetter than the Pacific.

Is 7 days enough in Costa Rica?

A minimum of 10 days (excluding travel) if you are to explore more than one region (highly recommended).

A two-week vacation in Costa Rica will ensure you see all the highlights of the country, whilst having time to travel between regions comfortably.

I spent a couple of days in the capital of San Jose, 3-4 days in the jungle and another 5-6 days in Jaco (by the sea).

my trip was a combined trip to New York, Belize, and Costa Rica.

I seriously wish I had stayed more!

Costa Rica Pura Vida- What is the currency in Costa Rica?

The currency in Costa Rica is the Colon- Colones for plural.

Fun Fact: It is named after Christopher Columbus who discovered Costa Rica in 1502.

Since 2012 the bills have had a new colorful design inspired by Costa Rica’s wild animals!

The new patterns include the sloth,  hummingbird, the morph butterfly, and the white-headed Capuchin monkey.

Dollars are also widely accepted in most parts of the country but cards are not as popular everywhere.

Therefore, please carry cash in small amounts.1 Euro equals 681 colones, so bring a big wallet and pretend you’re a millionaire #goals.

Do I need a visit to enter Costa Rica?

Cypriot passport holders do not require a visa to enter Costa Rica. A 90 days long stay is granted upon arrival.

British nationals, Greece citizens, do not require a visa either.

However, the easiest way to fly there is via the US. Actually, it pairs well with a vacation in New York or Miami!

But even to pass through the airport in the States, you need a US visa. And boy is it a hassle to get one!

TIP: apply for a visa a minimum of 2 months before you travel especially during peak travel seasons!

U.S. citizens from all 50 states and Washington, D.C. can enter Costa Rica via air on flights departing from the United States

US Visa Procedure

You must first visit this site to fill out an online form. The form adjusts itself according to your answers, so it could take you half an hour or it could take you two!

Anyone with a ”safe” job, steady income, and a clean record should be done in about 30-45 minutes.

To complete the form, make sure you have the following things ready:

• Immediate family’s ID numbers
• The address  you will be staying in America
• your employer’s contact information
• previous schools and universities names and addresses.

After answering all the questions online, you have to pay 150 dollar fee via bank card and get transferred to an online calendar.

There, you are given the available dates and times for your face to face interview at the American Embassy.

Additional Visa Tips

Unless you are immediately rejected, the interviewing agent will confiscate your passport, and if your visa is approved they will send it to you in 3-4 business days, stamped approved, and ready to go.

Your 150 dollars are not refunded if you are rejected.

The process at the Embassy took a good 3 hours. (Bring snacks. And patience)

Good news is, I now have a gorgeous 10 year American Visa which I can’t wait to abuse until the very.last.day.

Costa Rica Pura Vida – Vaccinations

When traveling to remote destinations, certain vaccinations are a must. Better safe than sorry right?

Tetanus and Hepatitis A shots are the normal ones expected if you will be traveling mostly in the tourist areas of Costa Rica.

Make sure you bring medication for mosquito bites along with a bucket of mosquito repellent (i was basically eaten alive and also got a staph infection!)

Vaccination tips for Cypriots

Cypriot citizens can visit your doctor (or the old Hospital in Nicosia) a minimum of 4-6 weeks before your travels.

If however, you are planning on traveling in remote parts of the country or volunteering in zoos, stray dogs, orphanages etc then you will need additional protection. Click here to find out more 

Travel To Costa Rica During Covid-19

Everyone can go to Costa Rica – whether vaccinated with the covid vaccine or not. However, whilst there, things are a little difficult for the unvaccinated.

Particularly, since January 2022, many activities are restricted to those who’ve been vaccinated.

Although entry rules aren’t set to change, restrictions on the ground will make it less attractive for the non-vaccinated.

You now cannot enter a hotel, restaurant, bar or museum without proof of vaccination.

Costa Rica Pura Vida – Flight Duration

Your flights will be the most expensive part of your trip, especially if you are traveling from Cyprus.

Your trip will be split into 2 or 3 flights depending on your connection flights.

Personally, I flew from Cyprus to London, and then to JFK in New York. I then stayed in the city for a few days and explored! After that, I flew from New Jersey to Miami, and Miami to Costa Rica.

From Cyprus: Approximate duration of flights: 12 hrs.

Approximate travel duration including transit and airport times: 19 hrs.

The UK – Aproximately 14 hours. There are no direct flights from the UK to Costa Rica either.

US Citizens – 4-5 hours Direct.

From Greece – 17 hours with a connecting flight.

How widely is English spoken in Costa Rica?

The official language in Costa Rica is Spanish.

The level of English spoken is definitely…low.

I was being silly and thought I would be able to talk like a local as I speak Italian. A failed attempt to speak with a taxi driver proved me wrong soon enough!

Some English is spoken especially in tourist destinations, but don’t expect miracles!

Prepare to improvise, use hand gestures, and smile like you slept with a coat hanger in your mouth.

Costa Rican Cuisine

Simple but delicious, the local cuisine is based around rice, beans, fried plantain, and either meat or fish.

There are various Caribbean influences in the dishes and the produce is super fresh.

Not as exciting and variable as Greek, Italian, or Asian Cuisine but very flavorful and fresh.

Oh, and super cheap too!

Costa Rica Pura Vida – Is Costa Rica warm year round?

Are you ready for some Tropicana?

Because Costa Rica is tropical to the max! It does however average temperatures from 23 – 33 celsius all year round. So yes, it is warm all year round.

But is it dry? The answer is no.

Let me break it down below!

Costa Rica’s two seasons are the Dry season (January through April) and the Wet season (May through December).

These correspond to the high season and low season. 

The highest “peak season” is the two weeks from just before Christmas until after the New Year when prices tend to skyrocket.

The descriptions Dry and Wet apply most accurately to the beach destinations of Guanacaste and Nicoya in the northwest corner of Costa Rica.

The rest of the Pacific side and much of the central mountains follow a similar pattern although with more precipitation in general.

The Caribbean Coast tends to be rainier year-round. 

It breaks the rules in September and October when the rest of the country is experiencing the heaviest rain and the Caribbean beaches are warm, dry, and sunny.

Weather Tips

Don’t let the words ”wet season” deter you.

It might rain, it might not. It’s still hot, I promise!

I was in Costa Rica at the end of July and it probably rained once or twice for about an hour max.

The wet season is also appealing as the rain forests and waterfalls are in their full glory! Additionally, prices are halved, beaches and other attractions are not crowded and there are many deals to grab!

Perfect if you are looking to travel on a smaller budget!

When should you not go to Costa Rica?

I would avoid the rainiest months, which are September and October.

During this time, you could have several days in a row with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

 What do people normally wear in Costa Rica?

No restrictions here!

People are too chilled to care to be honest.

”Pura Vida” – the Countries National saying, translates to ”good life” or ”Easy Life” – so basically no one really cares.

Just don’t walk around butt naked and you are good to go!

TIP: You will be doing a lot of jungle treks, zip-lining, horse riding, etc. so pack comfortable clothes and definitely a good pair of trainers or hiking shoes.

Is it Safe to go to Costa Rica?

Yes! Costa Rica is generally a very safe country- although its surrounding countries of Honduras and Nicaragua are riddled with crime.

Personally, I never once felt threatened, nor did I have anything stolen.

Of course, one must always use their common sense when traveling. For example:

• Avoid flashy jewelry or carrying around a ton of cash
• Don’t leave valuables in your car
• Use your safe at the hotel.
• Get a travel insurance

Transportation in Costa Rica

Your best bet is definitely an SUV Car rental.

I would avoid a scooter, as there’s so much to see in the jungles and rain forests!

From experience, a scooter will be far too dangerous on those roads.

Taxis are also widely available and so is Uber!

Public buses are the transportation of choice for budget-conscious backpackers on extended trips.

Typically they eat up too much vacation time for travelers with only a week or two to explore.

Is Costa Rica cheap or expensive?

Costa Rica is ranked as the most expensive country in Central America and the sixth most expensive in North America and the Caribbean.

As with most countries though, Costa Rica caters to all budgets and styles. I like to mix things up by staying in 3-4* hotels and moving to a 5* here and there. 

To figure out your budget, you need to think of 3 things: Accommodation, Food, and Transportation.

The prices points below will help!

Accommodation Prices

• Hostel: 8-15 Euros per Night
• Budget Hotel: 45 Euros per Night. Nothing fancy, but expect a clean room, air conditioning, and hot water
• Mid-range Hotel: 80-100 euros per night for a two-bedroom. For this price expect all the luxury basics; breakfast, A/C, hot water, TV, coffee maker, mini-fridge and pool
• High-End Hotel: 170+per night for a two-bedroom. Everything you might expect from a high-end hotel, along with infinity pools, jungle views, and Instagram worthy pics to spam all your friends at home.

Food Prices

Prices in tourist American-style restaurants tend to mimic American prices. Expect to pay 10-15 euros per meal.

While the price for food is comparable to the US, luckily, drinks are a lot cheaper.

Many restaurants run happy hour specials on cocktails and local beers are approximately 2 euros a bottle.

But seriously who wants to eat at TGI’S when you are on the other side of the world in a tropical paradise?

Instead, opt to visit local eateries called ”sodas”.

A large plate of local food costs a mere 5 euros and you are also supporting a local business.

I love chatting with the locals, they provide such valuable information! The interaction I have with them is one of the highlights of my trips.

Transportation Prices

• An SUV rental cost me approximately 350 euros per week- not cheap, but oh so convenient!!
• Buses are way cheaper at 2-3 euros for a journey
• there are also both shared and private shuttle buses available. I personally dislike sharing anyone else’s schedule on my travels and always avoid large groups like the plague!

Costa Rica Pura Vida -Charging electronic devices

The electrical current used in Costa Rica is 110 volts, AC.

The sockets are American-style, but budget places often don’t have a place for a grounding prong, so bring an adapter.

TIP: buy yourself an international adapter and never have to worry about sockets again!​

4 Easy Ways To Save The Planet Whilst Traveling

1. Replace your disposables with reusable items.

For example, cotton rounds, cotton swabs, and tissues. We use trillions of them! I swapped to reusables 2 years ago, and haven’t looked back since!

In particular, I picked up swabs for my ears, pointy ones for my make-up, cotton rounds for skincare, and even tissues.

2. Get a portable ashtray

Cigarette butts are the single greatest source of ocean pollution, with more than 60 million collected over 32 years! Yuk!

3. Carry a water bottle and straw

A simple reusable cup and metal straw are the best, and contribute a lot to the solution; trust me!

This filter bottle is great as it reduces chlorine and micro-particles. You can fill it up from any tap, or at your hotel to avoid buying a million plastic bottles when you travel.

100,000 marine creatures and 1 million sea birds die from plastic entanglement in a year.

Personally, I have tried paper straws and pasta straws too, but I really hate them! This stainless steel straw set comes with a handy pouch, and a brush to clean too!

4. Switch to shampoo and conditioner bars

There is no need to carry plastic bottles that you will later throw away. Not when you can get top-quality shampoo and conditioner in a bar!

This shampoo and conditioner set smells like heavenly lemon and eucalyptus, and don’t laugh, but mosquitos hate the smell of lemon so this is a WIN for me!

The seemingly humble but evil mosquito

If you are one of those lucky people that mosquitoes detest, I hate you. They are drawn to me like a moth to the flame and have on numerous occasions eaten me alive from head to toe.

The worst of it was actually in Belize and CostaRica when I counted 46 bites just on my legs alone.

One of them was so infected it gave me a staph infection – I had to take 2 rounds of antibiotics!!I won’t even describe what it looked like but let me just tell you, my sister cried when she saw it. A year later, the scar is still there.  

Diseases Spread by Mosquitos

Mosquitoes bites are at the best of times – annoying and itchy as hell. But an infected mosquito in the tropics can cause serious and sometimes lethal damage:

Malaria

•  Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by a parasite that infects a type of mosquito that feeds on humans. People who get malaria are typically very sick with high fevers, shaking chills, and flu-like illness.

Although malaria can be a deadly disease, illness and death from malaria can usually be prevented with anti-malaria tablets. About 1,700 cases of malaria are diagnosed in the United States alone each year. The vast majority of cases in the United States are in travelers and immigrants returning from countries where malaria transmission occurs, many from sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

Staph Infection

• Doctors are reporting a spike in staph infections from infected insect bites. Scratching tears or cuts the skin-allowing bacteria to get in. So you want to make sure that the wound is covered and protected. The drainage from these wounds is what carries the contagious bacteria.

Do your best not to scratch mosquito bites to avoid a staph infection. I had it, and it was horrible!

Exotic Holidays – Preventing Mosquito Bites 

In order to protect yourself, you must come prepared with the right products.   Through trial and many (!) errors here are my top products to ward off evil mosquitoes for good.  

1. Mosquito Net. This lightweight and breathable mesh net is made of premium polyester material and allows the air to circulate, also effectively keeps mosquitos and insects from entering your bed! The really great thing about this mosquito net is that it is made to fit all beds; from children to single and king size beds. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor sleeping (hotel, hostel, camping, hiking). Say hello to blissful, safe sleep!

 2.  Mosquito Repellant Spray

 3. Protec Mosquito Repellent Spray, or cream. (available in pharmacies in Cyprus)

 4. Mosquito Bracelets. I tried some weaker ones in Bali that worked quite well as additional protection – I wouldn’t count on those alone! It’s important you understand how vicious mosquitos actually are in exotic destinations! These particular mosquito bracelets though have a brand new technology that contains the highest 64% PMD diluted in a 10.8% solution proven extremely effective at protecting against Mosquitoes, Midges, Ticks, and other biting insects! Each bracelet is individually packaged in a resealable packet, proven to provide a longer life span. Before opening they can be kept for 3 years!

 5. Catnip Essential Oil. A great natural alternative that is DEET – free. So get this, mosquitoes hate the smell of catnip oil. Now I don’t know if its enough to keep them away for a solid 8 hours. What I know is I still use it for the sole purpose of pissing them off and as an extra layer of protection. #ComeAndGetMePeta .

Exotic Holidays – Curing Mosquito Bites 

“But I have taken all precautions!!” – u cry. 

They will still get you folks; they just won’t eat you alive. After years and heaps of money wasted, I have finally found the perfect aftercare:  

step 1:

•   Octenicept disinfecting spray

aka the holy grail of my entire travel life. Bitten by mosquitos? Spray. Crashed your scooter into the jungle and scraped your skin off? spray. Swam with elephants in a pool of mud and dirty water? SPRAY.

Spray like the man on My Big Fat Greek Wedding sprays Windex on his whole entire life.

Find it at your local chemist!  

step 2:

• Fucidin Antibiotic cream.

Humble and inexpensive it has saved my skin from a whole lotta suffering and a whole lotta itching and scarring.

Apply as soon as your Octenicept spray is dry and you are good to go. Find it at your local chemist.  

Step 3 (optional)

• Antihistamine Tablets    – those will ease skin rashes, itching, and general allergy symptoms!

Exotic Holidays – Other (very) common diseases

• Caused by bed bugs and unsanitary surroundings. Always use a towel before you lay on a sunbed (i will never understand the people who don’t! )
• Also be aware of sand flies who hide close to the ground such as dry tree holes, palm tree crowns, and tropical and sub-tropical rain forest jungles. Their bites are highly infectious and painful. If you see them (can be distinguished by their vertical wings and very long legs) get the f*** outta there.

Exotic Holidays – Food and Water Poisoning.

  They don’t call it the ”Delhi Belly” for nothing guys.

The tropics are notorious for food poisoning with a whopping 30 – 50% of tourists getting sick on their holiday.

It’s funny to think about till it happens to you and you end up in hospital on an IV drip being violently sick for a good 7 days. #byebyeHoliday  

How to avoid water poisoning:

• DO NOT DRINK TAP WATER. It doesn’t matter if your hotel is 5* just don’t do it. We don’t have the antibodies for it, period.
• NO ICE– unless its filtered water ice. (they are long ice cubes with a hole running through the middle). Those are filtered and imported, therefore safe.
• AVOID salads, veggies, and fruits in suspicious surroundings that have been washed with tap water. Also, produce handles by unsanitary hands which can lead to Hepatitis A.
• In regards to fruit, if it can be peeled (by you) it’s safe.

How to Avoid Food Poisoning:

  Sometimes you just can’t avoid it, no matter how hard you try. But the general guidelines are:

• Stick to freshly cooked food – choose live seafood or meat that’s cooked in front of you. Use your sense of smell and taste and if it’s dodgy, don’t eat it.
• Choose your restaurant wisely. YES, you will try street food, and yes you will eat outdoors in shabby little tents. That’s what traveling is all about! In fact, the best lobster of my life was had in Belize, on the beach, cooked in a little tent, served in tinfoil! But when it comes to either street food or restaurants- always go for the one that has a long queue of locals.
• Never EVER  consume food that’s been sitting outdoors for hours. Make sure they cook it fresh in front of you. The heat and the flies are a recipe for disaster.

Food or Water Poisoning Cure

For starters, I never leave the country without Primperan and Immodium. (for vomiting and diarrhea)

However, I do have a new travel favorite: Activated Charcoal.  Activated charcoal was a lifesaver in Thailand when I had a bad smoothie – and I’m now a hardcore fan. It picks up and eliminates all bacteria and nasties in your stomach and speeds up your recovery time. It also cures bloated stomachs and eases symptoms of IBS. I take it at the beginning of every flight and keep taking it while I travel! #winner    

Exotic Holidays – Vaccinations to Get. 

  Some vaccinations are compulsory. Visit your local clinic (Cypriots Visit your General Doctor or the Old Nicosia Hospital) a minimum of 6-8 weeks before your travels.

The two shots you must get are a Tetanus shot and a Hepatites A (you must get two shots to be protected).

There are other additional shots like Yellow fever, Hep B, etc that may not apply to you.

Exotic Holidays – Travel Insurance.

No one wants to spend money on ”what-ifs” when they could spend it on cute outfits right? Wrong.  

What no one wants, is to end up in Hospital and have to fork out thousands in medical bills. Plus, to have to spend their entire trip in misery (and the toilet bowl).
