Nowadays Ithaca Greece is a peaceful, quiet, and undiscovered island living up to the standards of the most demanding travelers.

The Myth Behind Ithaca Greece

When Odysseus set off to war in search of eternal glory in Troy, his beloved wife, Penelope, was left alone not knowing if her husband would ever return.

Throughout the years, the palace was filled with suitors who would flirt with the queen persistently. They eventually forced her to promise to remarry – to one of them. To keep them at bay, she came up with a clever plan! She vowed to remarry – but only when she would have finished weaving a shroud.

So, she spent the daytime weaving it and the nighttime unweaving it. Thus, she managed to stay clear of the suitors for 20 years, until Odysseus returned to Ithaca.

Why you should choose Ithaca Greece for a day trip

A day trip to Ithaca is a great way to incorporate a bit of Greek Island Hopping into your travels!

There is also much to do and see on the island in the space of a single day! You can certainly choose to stay overnight and stretch your trip to 2-3 days as desired!

Accommodation options in Ithaca

I fell in love with Kefalonia, and I thought my Ithaca day trip would be a bit of a disappointment in comparison. I am glad to say that I was sorely mistaken! The island is beautiful, with so much character and history behind it, definitely worth a visit.

Ithaca Greece: The Ferry Over

Begin your journey by catching the early morning ferry from Kefalonia to Ithaca Greece. The ferry takes a mere 20 mins and costs just 3 euros! There are several ferries during the day, with the earliest one leaving at 7.05 am. You can find ferry options here.

We took the ferry at 8.15 am and also took our rented car from Kefalonia with us. The cost to take the car with us was 20 euros (in addition to the 3 euros for an adult ticket)

This was a great decision because we didn’t need to worry about transportation once we had arrived in Ithaca! It is also the more cost-effective option. Taxis in Ithaca Greece are available, but they can be expensive.

What To Do in Ithaca Greece:

As you step ashore in Ithaca, you’ll be greeted by the island’s tranquil charm and warm hospitality.

As ferries and boats glide into the harbor in the main town of Vathy, visitors are greeted by a scene straight out of a postcard, with colorful fishing boats bobbing gently on the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea.

The port area is bustling with activity, yet retains a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere that is characteristic of island life. Cute waterfront tavernas line the promenade, and visitors soak in the stunning views of the harbor and surrounding hillsides.

At the heart of the port stands the bustling marina, where local fishermen unload their daily catch. It is a busy port, with boats of all sizes coming and going throughout the day.

Admire the Architecture

The architecture in Ithaca Greece is a charming blend of traditional Greek island style with influences from its rich history and culture. Whitewashed buildings adorned with vibrant blue accents characterize the picturesque villages that dot the island’s landscape.

As you venture further into the island’s interior, you’ll encounter stone-built houses nestled amidst olive groves and vineyards. Many of these traditional homes feature terracotta-tiled roofs, wooden shutters, and intricate wrought-iron balconies.

Throughout Ithaca, you’ll also find remnants of ancient architecture, including ruins of Venetian castles, Byzantine churches, and archaeological sites dating back to antiquity. These historical landmarks add to the island’s allure, providing glimpses into its storied past.

Explore the villages

Vathy
Vathy is the capital of the island and home to the Maritime and the Folkloric Museums. It is also home to the renowned Archaeological Museum of Ithaca. Vathý is built on a bay the center of which is decorated by the tiny little island of Lazarétto. Interestingly enough, Lazaretto is a former sanatorium and prison!

Perahori
A gorgeous scenic little village with a breathtaking view over the island. Built at the edge of the Afentikós Lógos forest, it is the perfect starting point for walks by medieval ruins in the oaks.

Hike the Hiking Trails

With its 27-kilometre long and 6.5-kilometre large mountainous surface, it boasts plenty of hiking as well as mountain bike trails. You’ll find them alongside the coast and through olive, cypress, pine, oak, arbutus, and carob trees up on the hills. 

Many old footpaths cross the island and lead to tiny chapels, secluded beaches and hilltops with breathtaking views.

Stunning Sightseeing

One of the most iconic architectural landmarks in Ithaca is the Monastery of Panagia Kathariotissa. It is perched high on a hilltop overlooking Vathy. It has whitewashed walls and a red dome, that offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape!

Discover the ancient history of Ithaca at the Archaeological Museum of Ithaca. The artifacts here, dating back to the Mycenaean period offer a glimpse into the island’s past. Marvel at the intricate pottery, sculptures, and other relics that tell the story of Ithaca’s rich cultural heritage.

Next, head to the legendary Cave of Nymphs, nestled amidst olive groves and rugged cliffs. According to Greek mythology, this mystical cave was once the home of the nymphs who enchanted the hero Odysseus during his epic journey home. Explore the cave’s hidden chambers and soak in the serene beauty that inspired ancient legends.

No visit to Ithaca would be complete without paying homage to the island’s most famous landmark, the Homeric School of Ithaca. According to tradition, this ancient site was where Odysseus’s son, Telemachus, was educated by his tutor, Mentor. Wander through the ruins of this historic site and imagine life in ancient Greece.

Scuba diving, snorkeling, and sea kayaking are great options for water enthusiasts.

If you can, try to visit the Cave of the Nymph! According to myth, Odysseus had hidden there the gifts he had brought along from the land of the Phaeacians.

Ithaca Greece is blessed with some of the most stunning beaches in the Ionian Sea, each with its unique charm. From secluded coves with crystalline waters to sweeping stretches of golden sand, the island’s coastline is a paradise.

One of the most popular beaches is Filiatro, with its turquoise waters and lush green surroundings. Nearby, Sarakiniko Beach boasts dramatic cliffs and rock formations, ideal for snorkeling and exploring underwater caves.

For those seeking a quieter retreat, Agios Ioannis Beach offers peace and tranquility. Here you’ll find crystal-clear waters and breathtaking views of the surrounding hillsides.

But my absolute favorite is Skliri Beach. A beach I so vividly remember, and often dream about! Tucked away from the crowds, this secluded beach offers a peaceful retreat for those seeking solitude and tranquility.

Accessible by boat or a short hike along a scenic trail, Skliri Beach rewards visitors with its unspoiled beauty and pristine waters.

The beach itself is composed of smooth pebbles and coarse sand! It’s perfect for lounging in the sun or taking a refreshing dip in the azure sea.

Surrounded by towering cliffs and lush vegetation, Skliri Beach feels like a secret paradise waiting to be discovered.

Hike (or boat) to Gidaki Beach

Gidaki Beach, nestled on the stunning island of Ithaki, Greece, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. What sets Gidaki apart is not just its pristine sands and crystalline waters but the journey to reach it.

You can get there by boat or hike and I chose the latter. The hike to Gidaki takes about 1 hour and is an adventure in itself! Winding through lush olive groves, fragrant pine forests, and rugged cliffs it offers breathtaking vistas of the Ionian Sea.

As you trek along the rugged coastal paths, the anticipation builds, until suddenly, Gidaki reveals itself in all its splendor. It really is a secluded paradise framed by dramatic cliffs and turquoise waters. Its remoteness lends it an untouched allure, attracting nature enthusiasts and solitude seekers alike.

Tia’s Tip: Get there early in the morning if you want the sun! After midday, the cliffs form a shadow on the beach! Gidaki Beach can easily be combined with Skliri Beach, as you literally pass by Skliri to get to Gidaki. I opted to get to skliri at about 4 pm and spent the whole afternoon there, until the glorious sunset!

Indulge in Gorgeous Food

After working up an appetite, indulge in a delicious meal at one of Ithaca’s charming tavernas.

Feast on freshly caught seafood, traditional Greek meze, and a glass of crisp white wine or ouzo.

Finish off with a mesmerizing Sunset

Before catching the ferry back to Kefalonia, take a moment to savor the breathtaking sunset. It doesn’t matter where you are, although there are a few scenic viewpoints.

Watch as the sky transforms into a palette of fiery hues, casting a golden glow over the Ionian Sea.

In the evening, its time to bid farewell to Ithaca Greece and return to Kefalonia. One thing is for certain; you’ll carry the memories and the timeless Greek Islands beauty forever.

Tucked away from the crowds, on the southwestern coast of Spetses, this hidden gem offers peace and serenity amidst nature’s beauty. You will find Zogeria 10km northwest of Spetses town.

This idyllic stretch of coastline captivates visitors with its pristine sands and crystalline waters, framed by lush greenery and rugged cliffs.

Secluded and tranquil, Zogeria Beach offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Lounge under a pine tree, take a dip, and bask in the tranquility of nature!

Alternatively, Pack a picnic and spend the day basking in the sunshine.

Zogeria Beach promises a memorable experience amidst the beauty of Spetses.

The beach offers plenty of rows with sunbeds and umbrellas, as well as some unused space for people who prefer bringing their own equipment!

3. Kaiki Beach for adventure.

Kaiki Beach in Spetses invites adventure seekers with its rugged beauty and crystal-clear waters. You can reach it easily, from the center of Spetses Town (within walking distance).

Rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore hidden caves and coves along the coastline. Paddle through turquoise waters and discover secluded spots only accessible by sea.

Enjoy breathtaking views of the island’s coastline and rugged cliffs from the water. The seabed is full of stones, so wear beach shoes if you can!

Kaiki is a fully-organized beach, with sunbeds, umbrellas, and two beach bars for snacks and drinks.

Kaiki Beach offers a thrilling and unforgettable experience for those craving adventure and exploration on Spetses Island.

4. Agios Mamas Beach for a lively day (also wheelchair friendly)

For those seeking a lively atmosphere, head to Agios Mamas Beach.

Probably the most well-known beach on the island, Agios Mamas boasts a sea track for wheelchair users too! The ramp works with a remote control provided by the Spetses Municipality (upon request).

Agios Mamas Beach in Spetses is a vibrant and bustling seaside destination just a few minutes away from Spetses port! The beach is known for its lively atmosphere, crystal-clear waters, and a mixture of soft and coarse sand.

Sunbathers lounge on the soft golden sands, while beachgoers splash in the shallow turquoise waters. Ayios Mamas is an organized beach, but you may also bring your own supplies!

Colorful beach bars line the shoreline, serving up refreshing cocktails and delicious snacks. Music fills the air as visitors soak up the sun and socialize with friends and family.

With its energetic vibe and stunning views, Agios Mamas Beach is one of the must-visit beaches in Spetses!

5. Kouzounos Beach for dreamy photographs.

With its turquoise waters and picturesque setting, it’s a photographer’s dream come true. Snap some Insta-worthy shots and make your friends jealous!

The turquoise waters are crystal-clear, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Surrounded by lush greenery and rugged cliffs, Kouzounos Beach provides a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Ayia Paraskevi Beach is a tranquil haven, known for its soft golden sands and clear turquoise waters making it very popular in Spetses. It is also named after the nearby Ayia Paraskevi church! This sheltered cove is organized, offering sunbeds and umbrellas for visitors to relax and soak up the sun.

Surrounded by lush greenery and scenic cliffs, Ayia Paraskevi Beach provides a picturesque setting for a day of beachside bliss. Beachgoers can also find a beach bar nearby, offering refreshing drinks and snacks.

Ayia Paraskevi Beach is one of the must-visit beaches in Spetses for those seeking relaxation and tranquility.

7. Ayii Anargyroi – for snorkeling

You will find Agioi Anargiri beach on the west side of Spetses Island! Named after the nearby church, its shore is full of white pebbles, crystal clear waters, and a stone-filled seabed. The surrounding scenery is beautiful so you can relax, snorkel, and even try some watersports.

The beach of Agioi Anargiri is well-organized, and can easily be reached via car or water taxi.

8. Xilokeriza Beach – For Families

Xilokeriza beach is a remote coast in southwest Spetses, with a pebbly shore and, crystal blue waters! It is protected from winds, so the calm sea is ideal for families with children.

Given that it is a very calm beach with no waves, Xilokeriza is ideal for a family visit! If you are looking for an easy day with the kids, add this to your beaches in Spetses list!

This is a well-organized beach with lots of sunbeds and umbrellas and a beach bar for snacks and drinks.

9. Lovers Cove – for a secluded paradise

Lovers Cove Beach is a hidden gem tucked away on the island’s coastline. Admittedly, it is tough to reach on foot as you need to follow a trail between Zogeria and Vrellos Beach. Alternatively, you can visit via boat.

It is an isolated spot, so it is rarely ever crowded, which makes it ideal if you prefer to have a quiet time by the sea waters!

With its secluded location, soft sand, and pristine waters, it offers couples a romantic retreat away from the crowds. The turquoise waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and the lush greenery and rocky cliffs create quite the spectacle for the eyes!

This is a completely non-organized beach – so expect to find no sunbeds, umbrellas, cafes, or bars ( although the trees offer some natural shade).

Is it worth it? It absolutely is.

10. Garifalos Beach – for a castaway feeling

Garifalos Beach is another hidden gem located 1km southeast of Spetses town. Its pristine sands and crystal-clear waters make it a favorite among locals and tourists alike. It is a pebbly shore, with a rocky seabed, so wear proper foot attire!

The beach is surrounded by rugged cliffs and lush greenery, creating a picturesque setting for sunbathing and swimming.

Garifalos is another one of the non-organized beaches in Spetses so please come prepared with your own equipment and refreshments!

P.S. Bring a hat, the sun is scorching hot, and there are only a few trees for shade.

11. Vrellos Beach – for windy days

You will find Vrellos Beach in the Nothern part of Spetses. With its soft golden sands, rocky seabed, and crystal-clear waters, it’s a paradise for beach lovers and snorkelers.

Its U shape protects it from strong winds, and a beautiful and dense pine tree forest surrounds it!

The beach offers a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and unwinding.

The beach bar that used to operate the beach has been closed recently, so the beach (at the time of my writing this) is completely non-organized.

For those seeking a serene escape away from the crowds, Vrellos Beach is the perfect destination on Spetses Island.

12. Ligoneri Beach – for off- the- beaten path

Ligoneri Beach is another off-the-beaten-path beaches in Spetses. The beach boasts coarse golden sands and crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Surrounded by lush greenery and rocky cliffs, Ligoneri Beach provides a tranquil setting for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Accessible by foot or water taxi from the main town, it offers a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle. With its unspoiled beauty and calm ambiance, Ligoneri Beach is a hidden paradise waiting to be discovered.

The beach of Ligoneri is non-organized, with no beach facilities or nearby food and drink options.

Admire the neoclassical architecture, visit charming boutiques and art galleries, and soak in the lively atmosphere of the bustling harbor.

2. Visit Bouboulina’s Museum

Dive into the island’s rich maritime history with a visit to Bouboulina’s Mansion.

This iconic landmark, once home to the legendary Greek heroine, offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s past through its well-preserved artifacts and exhibits.

3. Cruise Around the Island

Hop aboard a traditional kaiki boat and set sail for a leisurely cruise around Spetses Greece. You can visit locations like Porto Heli, Ermioni, or even Monemvasia.

• Tarsanas. Exceptional Seafood tavern
• On the Verandah (Posidonion Hotel) – For exquisite Fine dining and wine.
• Patralis – famous taverna for both fish and meat dishes since 1935. Excellent desserts too
• Clock Earery – casual Italian. And for days when you just want a burger!

One popular route is the path that leads from the historic town of Spetses to the picturesque Old Harbor, passing through olive groves, pine forests, and ancient ruins along the way.

For a more challenging hike, adventurers can tackle the trail that ascends to the summit of Mount Profitis Ilias, the highest point on the island, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the sparkling Aegean Sea.

Along the way, hikers can discover hidden gems such as secluded beaches, natural springs, and traditional villages.

13. Participate in the Spetses Mini Marathon

The Spetses Mini Marathon is an annual sporting event that attracts athletes and participants from all over the world. Established in 2011, the event celebrates the island’s rich maritime history and promotes sportsmanship, camaraderie, and healthy living.

The main highlight of the Spetses Mini Marathon is the 25-kilometer race! This takes participants on a scenic route around the island, passing through charming villages, coastal roads, and lush landscapes.

In addition to the main race, the event also features shorter-distance races, including a 10-kilometer race and a 5-kilometer fun run, catering to runners of all ages and abilities.

Participants can expect a festive atmosphere, with live music, entertainment, and cultural activities held throughout the weekend.

The Spetses Mini Marathon is as much a sporting event as it is a celebration of the island’s natural beauty, culture, and community spirit.

14. Observe an open-air sculpture exhibition

Natalia Mela – the famous sculptress used to spend her summers in Spetses Greece. Thus, she was inspired to create several sculptures and statues that decorate the island, including the famous Bouboulina statue on Poseidonio Square.

The open-air exhibition is available for everyone to see in the forest area of the Lighthouse, in the Old Harbour. Animals, like goats, bulls, and mythical creatures, like this mermaid welcome boats into the harbor, and await visitors to marvel at them.

15. Open Air Cinema at Cine Titania

Cine Titania is a beautiful “open air” old cinema – recently restored – in the middle of the town, showing all new releases.

Sitting on comfortable garden-style furniture with tables for snacks and wine, this is a great way to spend a warm summer evening. The cinema has some wonderfully restored cine cameras in the venue and somewhere to buy popcorn, beer, and wine.

Open from May to the end of September, I’m sure you will enjoy this family pastime under the night sky of Spetses!

16. A drink with a view at Balconi

A very popular bar right on the seafront with a great atmosphere.

Established in 2014, Balconi is a fantastic place for dinner and drinks with a view of the bustling life around Spetses harbor.

The food is tasty, and the cocktails and coffee are excellent!

17. Spetses Stargazing

An outdoor activity not to be missed! If you are interested in astrology, you will love this unique stargazing experience – offered exclusively by AAC members certified in Astronomy.

In this memorable cosmic journey, you will hear about the history of astronomy, modern astronomy, philosophical astronomy, and ancient Greek mythology (and its relationship to different plants, galaxies, and constellations).

This experience has a 2-hour duration and aims to bend over Cosmos’ biggest mysteries.

Ferries to Spetses

Spetses is one of the Saronic Greek islands that are located southwest of Athens. The Saronic islands are quite popular because of their proximity to the capital of Greece, Athens. This makes them ideal for shorter excursions and weekends away.

The island in particular is a 2-hour ferry ride from the capital.

Getting to Spetses is relatively easy, with several transportation options available:

1. Ferry: The most common way to reach Spetses is by ferry. Ferries depart regularly from the port of Piraeus in Athens and usually stop at the nearby island of Hydra before continuing to Spetses. The ferry ride takes approximately 2-3 hours, depending on the route and ferry schedule.
2. Hydrofoil: For a faster option, travelers can take a hydrofoil or flying dolphin from Piraeus to Spetses. Hydrofoils are high-speed vessels that make the journey in about 2 hours, offering a quicker alternative to traditional ferries.

Transportation in Spetses

Once on Spetses, visitors can explore the island on foot, by bicycle, or by renting a scooter or ATV.

Horse-drawn carriages are also a popular mode of transportation for getting around the picturesque harbor town. I am personally very against that and I urge you to think twice before putting such strain on a horse, especially under the extreme heat!

Spetses Greece Hotels

if you have the budget, then look no further than the 5* Posidonion Hotel which is nestled along the picturesque waterfront of the island’s main town.

The hotel offers stunning views of the azure waters of the Saronic Gulf and the bustling harbor.

With its traditional whitewashed architecture and elegant interiors, the Posidonion Hotel exudes timeless charm and sophistication.

The hotel’s restaurant serves delicious Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, while the bar offers a tempting selection of cocktails to enjoy on the terrace overlooking the sea.

Fascinatingly is also home to foxes, bats, hedgehogs, weasels, and more.

Aim to get there by 11 am to catch the light hitting directly on top of the lake.

Embark on a boat tour through the illuminated chambers, marveling at the stalactites and stalagmites that adorn the cave walls.

This is a must-see attraction in Kefalonia and the activity that I cherish the most!

1. Let Nature Take Center Stage

One of the highlights of Agistri Island is undoubtedly its stunning natural scenery.

Take a stroll along the coastline and you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the azure sea stretching out to the horizon.

For those seeking adventure, there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and exploring the island’s rugged terrain. Check them out here

2. Explore Agistri Island’s Charming Villages

Agistri Island is home to three picturesque villages, each offering its unique charm and character. These are Megalochori (or Mylos), Skala and Limenaria.

On the hill above Skala and Megalochori there is another, smaller, village, called Metochi.

Make sure to walk the narrow streets of Skala, the island’s main town, where you’ll find quaint cafes, traditional tavernas, and colorful boutiques selling local crafts and souvenirs.

For a taste of authentic Greek culture, be sure to visit the village of Megalochori, where you can sample traditional dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Limenaria is the quietest and most picturesque coastal village of Agistri, where time seems to sit still. There are only a handful of houses and two shops in the village. with a visit to swim in the crystal clear waters of The pier of Mariza!

One must-visit attraction is the Church of Agioi Anargyroi, perched atop a hill overlooking the island. The church is a stunning example of Byzantine architecture, and the panoramic views from its vantage point are simply breathtaking.

 Agia Kyriaki in Limenaria dominates the central square of the village, and The Mitropolis of Zoodochos Pigi, in Megalochori is adorned with rare frescoes. Just a few meters away you will find the historic church of Agios Georgios – dating before the 19th century.

• Avantis III Wreck – Depth: 16-32m. A well preserved 80mt cargo ship that lies on the bottom from 16mt to 47mt from bow to stern.
• Avantis III Wreck Propeller – Depth: 40-47m. For deep divers only!
• Dorousa Island West Cape – Depth: 10-40m. An interesting wall dive with great rock formations
• Canyon Dorousa Island – Depth: 10-30m. Another wall dive, with a small sunken boat to explore.
• Dorousa Island East Cape – Depth: 10-30m. A rich fishing spot.
• Old Dock Dorousa Island – Depth: 16-25m. An easy going shallow and lengthy dive
• Agistri Island Aponisos – Depth: 10-30m. A lovely tour for qualified OW divers and above
• Ammui Cape – super interesting rock formations
• Agistri Island Skilomagkas Cape – Depth: 10-35m. Great for exploring a large variety of sea fauna.

Interdive Diving Club Agistri has created an island tour that includes diving, snorkeling, sightseeing, and an all-you-can-eat Greek Barbeque. This is perfect for groups, couples or families where not everyone is interested in scuba diving but still wants to be included.

7. Tour Agistri Island on a Kayak

This is such a cool activity! Join a kayak tour and Wander along the rocky shores, and hidden shipwrecks and coves! You will also have the opportunity to visit one of the small uninhabited islands near Agistri Island!

Go Kayak Greece offers kayak tours and excursions as well as training lessons all year round. Choose from a taster session a sunset tour, to a full-day tour, or even a week-long expedition! Most of their tours are suitable for beginners and tandem kayaks are available, which can take young children.

No trip to Agistri Island would be complete without indulging in the island’s delectable cuisine.

Be sure to try the island’s specialty, grilled octopus, served with a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of oregano.

How do I get to Agistri?

By ferry! There are two options to choose from – both from Piraeus port, in Athens. You can either take the ferry (1:30 hr trip) to Skala port in Agistri island or the “flying dolphin” (55 minutes trip) to Megalochori port.

The Top 7 Agistri Beaches for a Greek Island Escape

Without further ado let’s jump straight into this article!

1. Skala Beach: Where Tranquility Meets Turquoise Waters

Nestled in the heart of Skala, the main village of Agistri Island, lies Skala Beach, a tranquil haven for sun-seekers.

Here, golden sands stretch as far as the eye can see, inviting visitors to bask in the warm Mediterranean sun.

With its calm and shallow waters, Skala Beach is ideal for families with young children.

Skala Beach is one of the organized beaches in Agistri! Here you will find hotels, sun loungers, umbrellas, beach bars, tavernas, and water sports rentals.

Very close to the beach; you will find the white church of Agioi Anargyri. To the left is a new tourist area known as Skliri, with similar features.

In the same direction, there is a beautiful path through lots of pine trees leading to Chalkidiada Beach. That one is more suitable for those seeking solitude (more on that below).

2. Chalikiada Beach: Surfers’ Paradise

For adrenaline junkies and water sports enthusiasts, Chalikiada Beach is the place to be. Located on the northern coast of Agistri Island, this windswept beach is renowned for its strong winds. This makes it ideal for windsurfing and kiteboarding.

Whether you’re a pro or a beginner, Chalikiada Beach offers endless thrills, excitement and breathtaking sea views.

Chalikiada Beach is a 10-minute walk through the forest from the “Skliri” area. The Area is well known for free camping and the nudist beach!

It’s known for its unique black volcanic sand and stunning rock formations! It doesn’t offer facilities like sunbeds, umbrellas, or beach bars. Visitors to Chalikiada Beach should be prepared to bring their own supplies for a day at the beach.

3. Aponisos Beach: A Secluded Retreat

One of the most famous Agistri beaches and for good reason! It’s a very small, organized, private island connected with a platform to Agistri Island. 

As you approach Aponisos Beach, you’ll be greeted by a picturesque landscape of lush greenery, pristine sands, and crystal-clear waters.

Spend your days lounging under the shade of swaying pine trees, or venture into the calm sea for a leisurely swim or snorkeling adventure.

Bear in mind that this isn’t an actual beach with sand! Access is through a platform or diving into the sea.

Aponisos Beach on Agistri Island is an organized beach, offering sun loungers, umbrellas, and a beach bar. Visitors can pay a 5 euro entry to the beach club, rent sunbeds, and purchase refreshments.

4. Dragonera Beach: Where Myth Meets Majesty

Named for its unique rock formations resembling the back of a dragon, Dragonera Beach is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and photographers.

Located on the eastern coast of Agistri Island, this enchanting beach offers a dramatic backdrop of rugged cliffs and sparkling waters.

Explore the hidden coves and sea caves that dot the shoreline, or simply relax on the soft sands and marvel at the natural beauty that surrounds you.

Dragonera is a mildly organized beach with umbrellas, snacks & cocktails at Dragonera Sunset Coast beach bar. There, you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and cocktails, and everything is served in eco-friendly wooden food boats 

The beach bar plays chill-out music daily and On Saturdays There are Beach parties with DJs.

Dragonera Beach offers a picturesque and tranquil setting for swimming, snorkeling, and soaking up the natural beauty of Agistri Island.

5. Megalochori Beach: A Slice of Serenity

Megalochori Beach is a peaceful retreat nestled in the charming village of Megalochori.

Traditional fishing boats bob gently in the harbor, while visitors lounge on the sun-drenched sands.

Megalochori Beach (or Milos Beach) is a beautiful stretch of coastline with crystal-clear waters and soft sand. There are some bars, cafes, and restaurants in the area too! 

With its calm, shallow waters and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, Megalochori Beach is the perfect spot to unwind.

6. Skliri Beach: A Secluded Paradise

Definitely one of my favorite beaches in Aggistri, if not No1!

Skliri Beach is a mix of sand and pebbled beach with clear waters, very close to the central village of Skala. If you are looking for serenity and untouched beauty, this is the place for you!

Tucked between rocky cliffs adorned with lush greenery, this hidden cove offers a gorgeous sense of tranquility.

The soft, golden sands gently slope into the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, inviting visitors to wade in and feel the refreshing embrace of the sea.

With its serene atmosphere and pristine surroundings, Skliri Beach is the perfect spot to escape the cares of the world and immerse oneself in the natural wonders of Agistri Island.

Known for its secluded and natural beauty, it isn’t an organized beach. There are no sun loungers, umbrellas, or beach bars. Skliri Beach offers a more rugged and unspoiled experience, perfect for those seeking solitude and connection with nature.

Tia’s Tip! The shores of Skliri Beach are rocky and a little steep – therefore please be careful when accessing the beach!

P.s Take your dog along, this beach is dog friendly!

7. Limanaki Beach: A Slice of Paradise

Limanaki Beach, nestled along the rugged coastline of Agistri Island, captivates visitors with its pristine beauty and tranquil ambiance.

Tucked away in a sheltered cove by the port, this picturesque beach boasts powdery white sands and crystal-clear waters that beckon sunseekers and swimmers alike.

The surrounding cliffs, adorned with vibrant greenery, provide a stunning backdrop against the azure sea, creating a scene straight out of a postcard.

With its unspoiled natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere, it’s no wonder that Limanaki Beach is considered one of the hidden treasures of Agistri Island.

The contrast of the deep blue Ionian Sea against the white pebble shore creates a mesmerizing scene that attracts visitors from around the world.

Location: Myrtos Beach is situated on the northwest coast of Kefalonia, approximately 30 kilometers from the island’s capital, Argostoli.

Accessibility: Access to Myrtos Beach is by car or motorcycle. There are winding roads leading down from the surrounding hillsides. While the drive can be challenging for some due to the steep and narrow roads, the journey is well worth it for the stunning views awaiting at the beach.

Facilities: Myrtos Beach, with its untouched and pristine setting, offers limited facilities. Visitors will find sunbeds and umbrellas for rent during the peak summer season, and a small beach bar offering refreshments. It’s advisable to bring along any necessities such as water, snacks, and sunscreen for a comfortable beach day.

Tia’s Tip: This beach is massive, but it does get very busy. Consider bringing your own umbrella if you are sensitive to the sun!

Myrtos Beach Warning

Myrtos beach can sometimes be a little dangerous to swim in because of the strong winds of Kefalonia.

Please exercise caution, especially on windy days when waves and currents are stronger. The waves can often reach 3 meters in height! It is stunning to witness, but scary and dangerous too! Only swim within the designated swimming areas and heed any warnings from lifeguards.

Sunset Viewing: Get ready for a stunning sunset view! Many visitors choose to linger until evening to witness this magical spectacle and it truly is worth the wait!

Extra Tip: Make sure you visit the Myrtos Viewpoint for insane views of the beach from above. Sharing some pictures of it below!

2. Antisamos Beach

This paradise is a famous beach you might recognize from the Hollywood film “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin,” Antisamos Beach. The beach’s stunning scenery served as the backdrop for several key scenes in the film, making it famous all over the world.

Beyond its cinematic fame, Antisamos Beach is beloved for its unspoiled beauty, lush vegetation, and tranquil ambiance.

The contrast of the vibrant greenery against the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea creates a scene of unparalleled natural beauty.

Location: Antisamos Beach is located near the town of Sami, on the eastern coast of Kefalonia. It’s approximately 27 kilometers northeast of the island’s capital, Argostoli.

Accessibility: Access to Antisamos Beach is relatively easy! There is a scenic road leading directly to the beach from the main coastal highway. After you park you will descend a short path or steps to reach the beach.

Facilities: Antisamos Beach is well-equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas. Additionally, beachside tavernas and cafes offer a variety of refreshments and snacks for visitors to enjoy.

Caves and Exploration: Antisamos Beach is renowned for its unique geological features, including sea caves and rock formations waiting for you to explore. Many visitors enjoy taking boat tours or kayaking excursions to discover these hidden treasures along the coastline.

3. Emplisi Beach

Emplisi Beach is a hidden gem tucked away on the northern coast of Kefalonia. Think of it as a secluded and unspoiled slice of paradise. It is also one of my top 3 beaches in Kefalonia!

It boasts stunning natural beauty, with pebbled shores and crystal-clear waters framed by dramatic cliffs and rocky outcrops. The beach offers panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and neighboring islands!

Location: Emplisi Beach is located near the village of Fiscardo, approximately 4 kilometers northeast of the town center. I would suggest heading to dinner at Fiskardo after and making a day of it if your accommodation is on the other side of the island.

Emplisi is nestled within a sheltered cove surrounded by rugged cliffs and lush greenery.

Accessibility: Access to Emplisi Beach is relatively easy, with a road leading directly to the shoreline. Alternatively, the beach is accessible via boat from the nearby port of Fiscardo.

Facilities: Emplisi Beach is a secluded beach with limited facilities. There are no sunbeds or umbrellas for rent! Additionally, you need to bring your own water, snacks, and sunscreen. However, the beach’s pristine and unspoiled nature is part of its charm and the main reason I love it so much!

Activities: Despite its remote location, Emplisi Beach offers excellent opportunities for swimming and snorkeling in its clear and inviting waters. The rocky seabed is teeming with marine life, making it a popular spot for underwater exploration and wildlife spotting.

Sunset Views: Emplisi Beach offers stunning sunset views! Stay on the beach and observe the sky turn pink, orange, and gold as it sets over the horizon. Magic!

4. Xi Beach

For a unique beach experience, head to Xi Beach, known for its distinctive reddish-orange sand.

Situated on the Paliki Peninsula, this family-friendly beach offers shallow waters perfect for swimming and water sports.

Indulge in a therapeutic mud bath, believed to have rejuvenating properties!

5. Petani Beach

Tucked away on Kefalonia’s western coast, Petani Beach beckons with its rugged cliffs and turquoise waters.

Accessibility: Access to Skala Beach is easy, with a paved road leading directly to the shoreline. Visitors can park their vehicles in the designated parking areas located near the beach. If you are staying in Skala, you can also reach in on foot.

Facilities: Skala Beach is well-equipped with Sunbeds, umbrellas, beachside tavernas, cafes, and water sports facilities.

Activities: Skala Beach offers various activities to suit every visitor’s preferences. You can enjoy Swimming, snorkeling, jet skiing, paddle boarding, and parasailing.

Shopping and Dining: Skala Beach is surrounded by a bustling resort town. In Plaka, you can find offering many options for shopping, dining, and entertainment. You’ll love the charming streets lined with shops, boutiques, and cafes! Perfect for evening strolls with dinner and ice cream too 🙂

8. Platys Gialos Beach

Accessibility: Access to Platis Gialos Beach is easy, with a road leading directly to the shoreline. There is parking provided! Visitors staying in Lassi can also walk there.

Facilities: Platis Gialos Beach is super well-equipped with numerous beach bars and water sports.

9. Makris Gialos Beach

Makris Gialos Beach is one of the most popular and well-known beaches on the island of Kefalonia!

It boasts soft golden sands stretching along the shoreline and crystal-clear waters gently lapping at the shore.

Location: You will find Makris Gialos Beach near the resort town of Lassi. It is approximately 3 kilometers southwest of the island’s capital, Argostoli. Additionally, its also located next to Platis Gialos beach – mentioned above. It’s easily accessible from the main coastal road and is a favorite destination for both locals and tourists.

Accessibility: As with Platis Gialos, access is convenient with an easy drive, and parking close by. If you are staying in Lassi, you can walk there instead!

In Thessaloniki, you’ll find souvlaki stands on almost every corner. But the best place to try it is at Savvikos – which you can find in Aristotelous Square, Ladadika, Toumpa, and the Mall.

Koulouri is a traditional Greek breakfast pastry similar to a bagel. It’s a circular bread covered in sesame seeds and can be enjoyed plain or with toppings like cheese or ham. The best place to try it is at Tragano – which offers a big variety of soft or crunch koulouri with various modern variations!

Galaktoboureko

Galaktoboureko is a Greek dessert that consists of a semolina custard wrapped in phyllo dough and soaked in syrup. It’s a rich and decadent dessert that’s perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth.

In Thessaloniki, you’ll find galaktoboureko on almost every dessert menu, but I urge you to try it at Galifianakis. Alternatively, go for Elenidis, a popular patisserie that has been serving the dessert since 194

Meze

Meze is a selection of small dishes that are served as appetizers or snacks. The dishes vary from region to region in Greece, and while in Thessaloniki you simply MUST visit the restaurant ”Full Tou Meze” in the Ladadika area, for an authentic Greek dining experience.

The restaurant specializes in meze, and these generous portions are made with the freshest local ingredients. I suggest asking the waiter for recommendations so you can sample a wide variety of flavors.

The restaurant also has an extensive wine list, with many Greek wines to choose from, making it a great spot for wine lovers.

With its lively atmosphere and delicious meze plates, Full Tou Meze is a must-visit for the best of Greek cuisine in Thessaloniki.

Gyros

Succulent Steak at Kala Kathoumena

Considered to be one of the best restaurants in western Thessaloniki, Sta Kala Kathoumena restaurant knows how to stand out with excellent high-quality cuisine.

Here, you can take a culinary journey with appetizers such as the famous Hadronikis pie – which is a fresh fried potato with cheese, feta, and egg – which is delicious and unique!

Additionally, you are spoiled for choice with a huge variety of premium meats, excellent tomahawk steaks, and divine USA and Argentinan cuts.

The restaurant is known for its cozy atmosphere and friendly service, making it a favorite among locals and tourists alike. 10/10 for meat quality, and service!

Custom made Profiterols at Chourreal

For those with a sweet tooth, Chourreal in Thessaloniki is the perfect spot to indulge in some delicious desserts. One of the standout dishes on the menu is the profiteroles, which are light and fluffy pastries filled with cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce.

At Chourreal, you get to custom-make your profiterole – by choosing your filling cream, and toppings. The result? Finger licking good!

The knowledgeable staff is happy to help you navigate the extensive beer menu and make recommendations based on your preferences.

Don’t worry about dressing up, the atmosphere and crowd are very relaxed. No wonder the Pulp Bar is a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
