Where to stay Nusa Penida – My choice

My personal choice on the island was super budget-friendly.

I stayed at the 3* Surya Chandra Beach Bungalows.

This beachfront property offers access to a terrace, free private parking, and free WiFi. The accommodation offers a 24-hour front desk, full-day security, and luggage storage for guests.

I chose this hotel primarily because I loved the look of these traditional bungalows, and secondly because of the price!

It is super affordable – under 30 euros per night for the Bungalow!

I wouldn’t call it luxurious, but it was clean, pretty to look at, and it had everything we needed!

Other Nusa Penida Hotels To Choose From And Why

If I hadn’t spent 3 more weeks traveling Indonesia – and then Singapore – I would have splurged for better accommodation.

Here are some options I found during my extensive research!

1. Adiwana Warnakali Resort 4*

Location: Toyapakeh

Adiwana Warnakali Resort is a luxurious boutique hotel perfect for couples and honeymooners. Nestled on a cliffside in Toyapakeh, it offers breathtaking ocean views.

The rooms are spacious and elegantly designed, featuring private balconies. Guests can enjoy a stunning infinity pool, a serene spa, and an on-site restaurant serving delectable Indonesian and international cuisine.

Its romantic setting makes it ideal for a memorable getaway.

Price point: 200-300 euros per night

2. Semabu Hills Hotel Nusa Penida 4*

Location: Toyapakeh

Semabu Hills Hotel is an excellent choice for families and groups. Located in Toyapakeh, this hotel offers large suites and villas, some with private pools.

The hotel boasts a large infinity pool with panoramic views of the ocean and Mount Agung. The on-site restaurant serves a variety of dishes, including kid-friendly options.

Additionally, the hotel provides a free shuttle service to nearby attractions, making it convenient for exploring the island.

Price point: 100-130 euros per night

3. Coco Resort Penida 4*

Location: Sampalan

Coco Resort Penida is ideal for single travelers and couples seeking a cozy yet stylish stay. Situated in Sampalan, it features traditional Balinese bungalows with modern amenities.

The resort offers a relaxing pool area, a bar, and a restaurant specializing in fresh seafood. Its central location makes it easy to explore Nusa Penida’s attractions, such as Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach.

Price point: 50-100 euros per night

4. Autentik Penida “Glamping” – Top Choice!

Location: Crystal Bay

In one word – WOW!! Autentik Penida offers a unique Adults- only glamping experience in Nusa Penida.

It was fully booked when I visited the island, but trust me when I tell you I fell in love with this location!

Situated near Crystal Bay (850m), this accommodation is perfect for adventure seekers and nature lovers.

The luxurious tents are well-appointed, featuring comfortable beds and private bathrooms.

Guests can enjoy a refreshing dip in the outdoor pool or dine at the on-site restaurant. This glamping site is family-friendly, providing an exciting yet comfortable stay in the heart of nature.

Price point: 120+ per night. This location gets booked up MONTHS in advance!

5. The Mesare Eco Resort 4*

Location: Batumadeg

The Mesare Eco Resort is an eco-friendly retreat perfect for those seeking tranquility. Located in Batumadeg, this resort features wooden bungalows surrounded by lush greenery and forest.

The rooms are spacious, with large windows offering garden views. The resort includes an outdoor pool, a yoga pavilion, and an organic restaurant.

It’s an excellent choice for families, couples, and solo travelers who want to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature.

Price Point: 150-200 euros per night

6. Ogix Cliff Paradise 3*

Location: Atuh Beach

Ogix Cliff Paradise is a budget-friendly option that doesn’t skimp on views or comfort. Located near Atuh Beach, it offers simple, clean rooms with balconies overlooking the sea.

The hotel features a restaurant serving local dishes and an outdoor terrace perfect for watching the sunset. It’s a great choice for single travelers and couples looking for affordable yet scenic accommodation.

Price Point: 60-160 Euros per night

Choosing the Right Nusa Penida Hotel

When choosing among Nusa Penida hotels, consider your travel style and needs as well as your expectations and budget. Most of us have things we simply cannot live without while on vacation. Right?

For me, the right hotel can make or break my holiday. Even if I don’t spend an incredible amount of time on it, it is an important part of my travels. I want to be in a safe, clean environment and I want to FEEL like I am on vacation. Location is also important to me!

Nowadays, choosing a hotel is easier, because I am so clear and transparent with what I need from a hotel. I suggest you do the same!

Let’s face it. Good food is important. It is even more so important when you are traveling. Nothing beats trying something new, on the other side of the world and loving it.

And of course, there’s nothing more crappy than potentially dangerous food, or more disappointing than bad food – especially on vacation.

So knowing where to eat in Nusa Penida, is a pretty big deal. And I’ve got the answers!

So without further ado, let’s dive into the best restaurants in Nusa Penida.

1. Cactus Beach Bar

Starting off strong with one of my favorites on the island! Cactus Beach Club offers a perfect blend of relaxation, stunning views, and delightful culinary experiences.

Sitting on the western coast of Nusa Penida, it provides breathtaking views of the turquoise waters and the surrounding landscape.

The club is designed with a bohemian and rustic aesthetic, featuring comfortable seating, hammocks, and stylish decor that perfectly complements the natural beauty of the island.

Even though it is beautiful, it doesn’t feel stuffy, or too formal – and solo travelers will certainly feel comfortable there too.

The diverse menu offers a mix of local and international cuisine. You can indulge in fresh seafood, delicious salads, and mouthwatering burgers, all prepared with high-quality ingredients.

The club also offers a variety of refreshing drinks, including tropical cocktails, fresh juices, and cold beers

2. Warung Tu Pande

For an authentic Indonesian experience, head to Warung Tu Pande in Ped. This local eatery is beloved for its traditional Balinese dishes and warm hospitality.

The rustic setting offers a glimpse into the local culture, making it a favorite among travelers seeking genuine island flavors. Great prices too!

Does anyone else find it impossible to get good coffee in Asia?

The prices here are much cheaper than Seminyak beach bars in nearby Bali!

Penida Colada Beach Bar is a must-visit. Located right on the beach, this laid-back spot offers a perfect blend of chill and excitement. The bar’s bamboo structure and colorful décor create an inviting atmosphere.

• Signature Cocktails: Sip on creative cocktails like the “Penida Colada” while lounging on a bean bag.

Tips for Visiting Beach Clubs in Nusa Penida

Getting There:

• By Boat: Regular fast boats run from Bali to Nusa Penida. The trip takes about 30-45 minutes.
• By Scooter: Rent a scooter to explore the island and reach different beach clubs easily.

What to Bring:

• Sun Protection: Sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are a must.
• Swimwear: Don’t forget your swimwear for pool and beach activities.
• Cash: While many places accept cards, always carry some cash for smaller purchases.

Best Time to Visit:

• Dry Season: The best time to visit Nusa Penida is during the dry season from April to October. The weather is perfect for beach activities.
• Rain Season: I personally visited in August and the weather was fantastic. I don’t think it rained for the entire month I was in Indonesia! Global warming means weather is highly unpredictable year-round, especially in tropical destinations! Don’t limit yourself!

Diving in Nusa Penida is a must for anyone passionate about underwater adventures. Let’s dive into everything you need to know for an unforgettable diving trip.

Why Choose Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida is renowned for its pristine diving conditions. The island’s waters are teeming with diverse marine species, colorful coral reefs, and dramatic underwater formations.

The visibility is excellent, often exceeding 20 meters. Furthermore, the water temperature ranges from 25 to 28 degrees Celsius, making it perfect for diving year-round.

Not a scuba diver? Not to worry! There are some equally stunning snorkeling sites on Nusa Penida as well

Best Time to Dive

While you can dive in Nusa Penida year-round, the best time is between April and November. During these months, the weather is dry, and the seas are calm.

However, if you aim to see the famous mola mola (sunfish), plan your trip between July and October. This period offers the highest chance of encountering these gentle giants.

Nusa Penida Diving Sites

Nusa Penida boasts several world-class diving sites, each with its unique charm and challenges.

Below find a list of amazing Nusa Penida diving sites that should certainly be on your radar!

1. Crystal Bay

Known for its clear waters and vibrant corals, Crystal Bay is a favorite among divers. It’s also the best place to spot the elusive mola mola during the right season.

This beach is also perfect for swimming – with calm waters suitable for everyone. Make sure you check out as many jaw-dropping beaches in Penida as you can!

2. Manta Point

As the name suggests, this site is famous for manta rays. Divers often encounter these graceful creatures gliding through the waters.

Chasing the Magic of Manta Rays Nusa Penida

These gentle giants, with wingspans reaching up to seven meters, are often seen gliding gracefully through the water.

They come here to feed and visit cleaning stations where smaller fish remove parasites from their skin.

Manta Point is located on the southern coast of Nusa Penida and is easily accessible through various dive operators on the island.

Another site where manta rays can occasionally be seen is Manta Bay.

This site is also popular among divers and snorkelers looking to encounter these magnificent creatures.

Diving or snorkeling with manta rays is an awe-inspiring experience, making it a highlight of any trip to Nusa Penida.

3. Blue Corner

This advanced diving site features strong currents, making it a thrilling dive. The site is home to large pelagic species, including sharks and rays.

4. Toyapakeh

This site offers a rich diversity of marine life and some of the healthiest coral reefs around Nusa Penida. The gentle currents make it suitable for all levels of scuba divers.

5. SD Point

Located on the northern coast, SD Point is a drift dive offering a beautiful underwater landscape of hard and soft corals, along with an abundance of fish species.

Diving Schools and Guides

Nusa Penida has several reputable diving schools and operators. They offer various packages, from beginner courses to advanced dives.

Most schools provide experienced guides who know the sites well, ensuring your safety and enhancing your diving experience.

Safety Tips

Diving in Nusa Penida can be challenging due to strong currents, especially at sites like Blue Corner. Therefore, diving with a certified operator and following their safety guidelines is essential.

Tia’s Safety Advice for Diving Abroad

1. Personally, I would get certified locally before diving abroad, if you can. I hold an OW certification, which means I have been trained to dive up to 20 meters.

Why? Because diving in Nusa Penida, and Indonesia in general, is an incredible experience – you are likely to remember this for the rest of your life. So much so, that I truly believe you will enjoy it more if you have a bit of experience under your belt!

2. Ensure you have the appropriate certification for the sites you plan to visit. Also, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol before diving, and always perform a thorough equipment check.

3. Never EVER dive alone, or in sites you are not trained and qualified to do.

For example, my first dive in Indonesia was in Komodo National Park ( A once – in a – lifetime trip!). On the last dive of the day, the currents were so strong that I almost panicked I would be separated from my group. I have 20+ dives under my belt, but none with strong currents. Thankfully, I used my previous training to keep me calm and safe. A rookie might not be able to do that!

While diving in Nusa Penida is the main attraction, the island offers plenty of other activities. The views of this island are incredible to say the least, so there is a plethora of activities to choose from!

Accommodation and Dining

Nusa Penida offers a range of accommodations, from budget-friendly hostels to luxurious resorts. Many places cater specifically to divers, offering tailored services such as early breakfast options and dive package deals.

When it comes to dining, you’ll find a variety of options, including local warungs serving Indonesian cuisine and restaurants offering international dishes. Fresh seafood is a highlight, and many places offer stunning views of the ocean.

Getting There

Getting to Nusa Penida is relatively easy. Regular fast boats operate from Bali’s Sanur Beach, taking about 45 minutes to reach the island.

I arrived on the island from Nusa Lembongan – it only took 20 minutes and tickets are very cheap!

Alternatively, you can take a ferry from Padang Bai, which is a bit slower but offers a scenic ride.

Once on the island, you can rent a scooter or hire a driver to explore the various diving sites and attractions.

You see, Nusa Penida Beaches are not your typical ”chill all day” beaches. They are unique, and dramatic, with many of them being unsafe to swim in, and quite a few of them requiring a hike or effort to get to.

But this, In my opinion, just adds to the allure.

It’s unlikely that you will witness anything like this in this magnitude anywhere in the world.

Especially up-close, it feels untouched, and entirely off the beaten path – regardless of its recent popularity.

In all honesty, it is breathtaking nature at its best.

So keep reading, because, whether you’re an adventurous explorer or a relaxed beach lover, Nusa Penida has a perfect spot for you.

1. Kelingking Beach

Location: Southwestern coast

Swimming Conditions: Suitable, but caution is advised

Currents: Strong currents

Unique Features: Iconic T-Rex-shaped cliff

Kelingking Beach is undoubtedly the most famous of Nusa Penida beaches. Its iconic T-Rex-shaped cliff offers an unparalleled viewpoint that has become a social media sensation.

Its located about three kilometers to the southeast of Broken Beach, so they can easily be combined in a day!

The descent to the beach is challenging but rewarding, with steep steps carved into the cliffside. It will take you a while to get down, and you will need to be in suitable shoes, not flip flops.

Once you reach the bottom, you’ll be greeted by powdery white sand and turquoise waters. Swimming here is possible, but be cautious of the strong currents. Kelingking Beach is ideal for those who love adventure and stunning landscapes.

2. Crystal Bay

Swimming Conditions: Excellent

Currents: Mild

Once you reach the bottom, you’ll find a beautiful beach with soft sand and inviting waters.

Swimming is possible, but be mindful of the currents. Diamond Beach’s dramatic scenery makes it a must-visit for photographers and nature lovers.

5. Suwehan Beach

Location: Southeastern coast

Swimming Conditions: Suitable, but caution is advised

YOU CANNOT SWIM HERE, as it is highly dangerous.

Should you skip a visit? Absolutely not!! The views from the top are stunning, with waves crashing against the cliffs and turquoise waters filling the lagoon.

It is simply magical, well worth a visit.

It is a steep hike (around 800 steps) but the staircase feels very secure. While the beach itself is not suitable for swimming due to strong currents, the views alone make it worth the visit.

The 3 natural springs at the base of the cliffs are believed to have healing properties, adding to the uniqueness of Peguyangan Beach. Bring a swimsuit to dip into those!

10. Tembeling Beach and Forest

Location: Western coast

Swimming Conditions: Suitable in natural pools

Is Nusa Penida worth visiting

Nusa Penida is definitely worth visiting for its breathtaking landscapes alone! There are unparalleled adventure opportunities, from hiking and cliff diving to exploring vibrant coral reefs through snorkeling and scuba diving.

Its natural beauty and less crowded atmosphere provide a unique and memorable experience compared to more touristy destinations in Bali.

But please be advised: This island is NOT for the lazy tourist. You will need to hike, trek, and squeeze through mountains to explore it. If you love the great outdoors and are up for an adventure, Penida is the island for you.

I have spent extensive time in Indonesia, and after Komodo National Park, I can safely say Nusa Penida is my favorite!

The Best Things to Do in Nusa Penida

To make the most of your trip and enjoy all the things to do in Nusa Penida, consider the following tips:

• Packing: Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat. carry portable phone chargers or camera batteries because you will be taking pictures constantly!
• Respect Local Culture: Dress modestly when visiting temples, and respect local customs and traditions.
• Footwear: Comfortable, non-slip shoes are essential for hikes and steep descents.
• Safety: You will witness the incredible wonders of nature. Raw, rugged nature – which is often unpredictable. PLEASE be careful when hiking, swimming, and taking pictures.

With all of that being said, keep reading for incredible things to do in Nusa Penida!

West Nusa Penida

1. Kelingking Beach

Begin your adventure with a visit to the iconic Kelingking Beach. This spot is one of the best beaches in Nusa Penida and is renowned for its T-Rex-shaped cliff.

You can walk around and take pictures of the views and monkeys or you can choose to get down to the beach to swim.

To get there, take a hike down the steep path to the beach. (The word Hike will become a staple in this article!)

Once you reach the bottom, you’ll be rewarded with pristine sands and turquoise waters.

2. Angel’s Billabong

Next, head to Angel’s Billabong, a natural infinity pool set against a stunning cliff backdrop. Check the tides before you go, though, as it can be dangerous during high tide.

Walk to the right side of the infinity pool and you will be rewarded with breathtaking waves crashing against the cliffs.

3. Broken Beach (Pasih Uug)

Nearby, you’ll find Broken Beach, known for its unique archway that allows the ocean to flow into a pool.

The circular rock formation and the natural bridge are perfect for photo opportunities. It’s a short walk from Angel’s Billabong, making it ideal to combine.

4. Crystal Bay

Finish your day at Crystal Bay, a great spot for snorkeling in Penida and watching the sunset.

The coral reefs are vibrant, and you might even spot some Mola Mola fish if you’re lucky. Rent snorkeling gear from nearby shops and dive into the clear waters.

5. Scuba Diving

If you are into diving, then Indonesia will be extra heavenly for you! The underwater world is jaw-dropping – and you will see everything – from sharks to rays, mantas, mola molas, and giant turtles.

Nusa Penida has some excellent scuba diving sites, just waiting to be explored!

Central Nusa Penida

6. Goa Giri Putri Temple

Start your central Nusa Penida adventure with a visit to Goa Giri Putri Temple, the temple inside a cave! This sacred cave temple is hidden within a mountain.

To enter, you must first climb 110+ steps, then crawl through a narrow passage, but the vast cavern inside is worth it. While the entrance is entirely non-spiritual, the energy inside is very different.

You walk through the temples, observe the spiritual ceremonies exit on the opposite side of the mountain and walk back round a path to the car park.

Remember to dress modestly and bring a sarong. You can also rent one from the entrance. Duration: 30- 60 minutes

7. Teletubbies Hill (Bukit Teletubbies)

Next, explore the rolling hills of Bukit Teletubbies. These lush, green mounds resemble the landscape from the Teletubbies TV show.

The view is breathtaking, and it’s a great spot for a leisurely walk and panoramic photos.

I would particularly visit this spot with a drone- the images will be stunning!

8. Seganing Waterfall

Continue your journey to Seganing Waterfall, a less-visited gem.

Please ONLY visit this waterfall if you are an experienced hiker/trekker and are in great physical health.

The trek to the waterfall is very challenging, involving a steep descent. You have to zig-zag down the rock via a very steep and at times slippery path.

However, the effort is worth it when you see the secluded falls and the view of the ocean.

East Nusa Penida

9. Atuh Beach

On the east side of the island, start with Atuh Beach. Dramatic cliffs and unique rock formations flank this stunning beach. The water is calm and perfect for swimming.

To get there, you’ll need to hike down a path, but the scenery is worth it.

10. Diamond Beach

Next, visit Diamond Beach, known for its white sands and crystal-clear waters.

Again, you can choose to walk to the various viewpoints and take in the views. Alternatively, you can hike down to the beach!

The hike down can be challenging, but the picturesque beach, with its towering cliffs and palm trees, is a must-see.

11. Nusa Penida tree house (Rumah Poho)

While in the area, don’t miss the famous Tree House. It offers a unique vantage point overlooking the ocean and surrounding cliffs.

It’s an Instagram-worthy spot and a great place to take in the natural beauty of Nusa Penida.

12. Thousand Islands Nusa Penida Viewpoint

Adjacent to the Tree House is the Thousand Islands Viewpoint.

The view from here is stunning, with numerous rock formations jutting out of the turquoise waters.

It’s a perfect spot for panoramic photos and to soak in the island’s beauty.

South Nusa Penida

13. Peguyangan Waterfall – Nusa Penida Waterfall

Get ready for some more of that famous Nusa Penida Hiking! In the south, start with Peguyangan Waterfall.

To reach it, you’ll descend a series of blue stairs along a cliffside – around 700 steps (!), offering breathtaking ocean views.

At the bottom, you’ll find a (very) small waterfall and a sacred temple. The journey itself is an adventure.

Tias’s Tip: If you love waterfalls but don’t want to hike and trek – Bali has incredible waterfalls that are much more accessible/tourist-friendly.

14. Tembeling Natural Pool

Next, head to Tembeling Natural Pool. This secluded spot offers a natural pool surrounded by lush forest.

It’s a bit off the beaten path, but the tranquility and clear water make it a perfect place for a refreshing dip.

15. Amok Sunset – Nusa Penida Sunset

No better way to end the day than with Amok Sunset Beach bar ( check out my article on Nusa Penida beach clubs if this is fully booked!)

With two beautiful pools—one an infinity pool—overlooking the ocean, this is the perfect spot to end your day or a delicious sunset gourmet dinner.

How to get to Nusa Penida

First up, you need to fly to Bali which is the most common departure point, then get a ferry to Nusa Penida.

From Bali To Penida

Speedboats are the fastest and most popular way to reach Nusa Penida from Bali. There are multiple departure points in Bali:

• Sanur Beach: The most common departure point. Speedboats from Sanur Beach take approximately 30 to 45 minutes to reach Nusa Penida.
• Padang Bai: Located in East Bali, speedboats from Padang Bai take about 45 minutes to an hour. This option is convenient if you’re staying in the eastern part of Bali.
• Serangan Harbor: Speedboats from Serangan Harbor take around 45 minutes to reach Nusa Penida. This departure point is convenient for those staying in southern Bali.

Booking Tickets: You can book tickets online in advance or purchase them at the harbor. During peak seasons, it’s advisable to book ahead to ensure availability.

Cost: Speedboat tickets typically range from IDR 150,000 to IDR 300,000 per person, depending on the company and class of service.

Schedule: Speedboats operate multiple times a day, usually starting from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Check the schedule in advance to plan your trip accordingly.

Nusa Lembongan to Nusa penida

Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida are two of the three Nusa Islands located southeast of Bali, with Nusa Ceningan being the third. Traveling between Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida is very easy!

By Public Boat

Public boats are the most economical option for traveling between the islands. They typically depart from the Jungut Batu Harbor in Nusa Lembongan and arrive at Toyapakeh or Sampalan Harbor in Nusa Penida.

• Schedule: Public boats usually operate in the morning, with departures around 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM. The return trips from Nusa Penida to Nusa Lembongan are often in the late afternoon.
• Duration: The journey takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
• Cost: Tickets are affordable, usually costing around IDR 50,000 to IDR 100,000 per person. (3-6 Euros)

2. Fast Boat

Fast boats provide a quicker and more comfortable journey between Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida.

• Schedule: Fast boats have multiple departures throughout the day, making it easier to find a time that suits your schedule.
• Duration: The trip takes around 10 to 15 minutes.
• Cost: Tickets typically range from IDR 100,000 to IDR 150,000 per person. (6-9 euros)
• Booking: You can book tickets online, through your accommodation, or directly at the harbor.

Nusa Penida vs Nusa Lembongan

Both part of the Nusa Islands trio near Bali, they offer distinct experiences for travelers.

Nusa Penida, larger and more rugged, is known for its dramatic landscapes like Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong, and the underwater wonders of Crystal Bay, making it ideal for adventure seekers and nature lovers.

In contrast, Nusa Lembongan is smaller and more laid-back, with beautiful beaches such as Dream Beach and Mushroom Bay, vibrant coral reefs perfect for snorkeling and diving, and a charming, relaxed vibe that appeals to those looking for a more leisurely escape.

Both islands provide unique and memorable experiences, but Nusa Penida stands out for its wild, untamed beauty.

On the other hand, Nusa Lembongan offers a more serene and accessible tropical getaway. Personally, I visited both, and spent 3 days on each island.

P.s If you have mobility issues, Nusa Penida will be very difficult to explore.

Scooter Rental Penida and Car Rental Nusa Penida

The best way to get around the island is either to rent a scooter or hire a driver. For some reason, no one will let you rent a car, unless someone else is driving it!

Some roads are steep and rough, so drive carefully, especially if you’re not an experienced rider.

Get ready to embark on an unforgettable Odyssey! Because Komodo National Park is a place where nature’s most awe-inspiring wonders converge to create an unparalleled adventure.

Located in Indonesia, Komodo Flores boasts a plethora of incredible experiences waiting to be discovered and I am here to tell you all about them!

From the breathtaking vistas of Padar Island to the otherworldly Pink Beach, and the mesmerizing underwater world perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving, this destination has it all. It is no wonder that in 1991, Komodo was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Below, I will be listing my 10 favorite experiences and activities in the National Park! I am not sponsored by anyone I happen to mention in the blog post!

So Join me, on a journey through this tropical paradise as we uncover the magic of Komodo Flores.

Where Exactly is Komodo?

Komodo National Park is located in Indonesia, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores.

The park includes of 26 islands, with the main ones being Komodo, Rinca, and Padar. It is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands in the eastern part of the Indonesian archipelago.

The park is known for its stunning landscapes, diverse marine life, and the presence of the Komodo dragon, the world’s largest lizard.

The total area of Komodo National Park is approximately 1,733 square kilometers (669 square miles).

Practical Information on Komodo Flores

1. How to get there: The most common way is by flying to Labuan Bajo on Flores Island. There are flights from Bali and other major cities in Indonesia. This is where I chose to stay for my 3 days of exploring.
2. When to visit. Typically, the dry season (April to December) is considered the best time to visit Komodo National Park. The weather is more predictable, therefore conditions for both land and underwater activities are favorable.
3. Visa: Visitors to Indonesia typically need a visa, which can often be obtained on arrival. Check the latest visa requirements and regulations before your trip.
4. Health Precautions: Make sure you are in good health, as the climate can be hot and humid. Stay hydrated and take necessary precautions against mosquito bites.
5. Conservation Guidelines: Follow responsible tourism practices. Respect the natural environment, wildlife, and local communities. Do not disturb or feed the Komodo dragons, and follow the guidance of your guides.
6. Safety: To ensure your safety DO NOT disturb the wildlife and marine life. Wear a hat, carry plenty of water, wear comfortable shoes and always listen to your tour guides and park rangers.
7. Long days: Most of the tours start at the crack of dawn – some as early as 5 am! You are expected to spend 10-12 hours per day on a tour. However, time passes very quickly with your days packed with adventure and fun. As a result, you might find yourself very tired in the evening.

Is there an entry fee?

There is an entrance fee for Komodo National Park, and fees vary for international and domestic visitors. The current price in 2024 sits at 450.000 IDR/person (27 Euros) . You will pay this fee in cash to your tour operator.

Can I fly a drone in Komodo Flores?

You need a special permit to fly a drone anywhere within Komodo National Park. Furthermore, you have to buy the permit 3 days before the trip. The cost of the ticket is idr 1.000.000 (60 euros) . You can purchase the ticket at the National Park Office in Labuan Bajo.

Alternatively, contact your tour provider or resort and ask them in advance for a permit.

Sadly I did not do enough research on the subject, therefore I was too late to apply for a permit 🙁

Day Trips to Komodo National Park

Guided tours are recommended to explore the park safely. Local guides are knowledgeable about the area, its wildlife, and can enhance your experience. There are various tour operators in Labuan Bajo offering day trips and liveaboard options.

Below I will list the 10 best things to do in Komodo Flores – you can choose how you want to combine them.

If you are traveling slowly, then feel free to spread these experiences up on different days. I had 3 days to see everything I wanted, so I booked two full-day tours!

A quick search on the internet, and you will find a plethora of companies that offer day trips ( and even 2-4 Day tours ) to Komodo Flores.

After much consideration, I chose Bintang Komodo Tours . This is not sponsored by the way, and I have no affiliate link with them. Feel free to pick whichever suits you!

1.Padar Island: A Hiker’s Paradise

Our adventure begins on Padar Island, a gem in the Komodo archipelago. This island is known for its iconic viewpoint, where a challenging hike leads you to panoramic vistas that will leave you breathless.

Set your alarm clocks because this journey begins at the crack of dawn, with a 5:30 AM hotel pick-up.

As the sun slowly peeks over the horizon, we find ourselves aboard a cozy speedboat, witnessing one of the most magnificent sunrises of our lives.

Like a radiant fireball, the sun paints the sky with orange and gold hues. The tranquility of this moment is beyond words, setting the tone for our incredible day ahead.

Arriving at Padar Island at 7 a.m., we join hundreds of other adventurers!

Thankfully, a lot of groups had climbed up for the sunrise so they were already leaving when we arrived!

The Climb to the top of Padar Island

Now, let’s talk about the climb. Ascending Padar’s steep hills can be challenging, but the promise of what lies ahead makes it all worthwhile. The path is a mix of 850 steps and its made out of well-maintained stairs and rugged terrain. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. The amount of people I saw with questionable footwear is insane!!

As we ascend, the level of difficulty increases, particularly towards the end but so does the excitement. There are 5 stations along the way, where you can rest, take photos and admire the view.

As you reach the top, you’ll be greeted by a jaw-dropping 360-degree view of Padar’s tri-colored bays, surrounded by lush green hills. The contrast of their unique sands, one pink, one white, and one black, is a sight to behold. It’s a photographer’s dream come true, and the perfect place to watch the sunrise or sunset.

The pink beach gets its distinctive color from crushed red coral mixed with the sand. The white beach’s soft sands contrast beautifully with the lush greenery of the surrounding hills. And the black beach is a volcanic wonder, with dark, velvety sands that beckon you to explore.

As you catch your breath at the final summit, take a moment to soak in the natural beauty surrounding you. The breathtaking cliffs, the crystal-clear waters, and the symphony of colors beneath you all create an unforgettable experience.

A very early day that starts with a mesmerizing sunrise, leads to an invigorating climb and rewards you with views that will stay etched in your memory forever.

Padar Island is a must-visit destination for all travelers! A place where the journey is as incredible as the destination itself.

2. Pink Beach: Nature’s Artistry

From Padar Island, we sail to the renowned Pink Beach, which gets its name from the striking pink hue of its sand. This otherworldly beach is one of only seven pink beaches in the world!

The sands here are like no other! It’s a delicate shade of pink that glistens in the sunlight! This is caused by a rare natural phenomenon created by the mixing of white sand with tiny red coral particles.

Spend your day lounging on the beach, snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, or simply admiring the stunning scenery. The clear, turquoise waters reveal an underwater world teeming with colorful marine life, coral reefs, and fish species.

Surrounded by lush green hills and rugged cliffs, Pink Beach is truly a slice of heaven on Earth. The contrast between the pink sand, blue waters, and green hills creates a stunning visual spectacle. It’s the kind of place where you can’t help but reflect on the incredible beauty of nature and how fortunate we are to experience it.

3. Komodo National Park – Up close and personal with dragons

Komodo Flores is inhabited by a population of around 5,700 giant lizards. Their appearance and aggressive behavior have led to them being called ‘Komodo dragons’.

Practically THE No1 reason to visit Komodon Flores is to have the unique opportunity to encounter the legendary Komodo dragons. And I did!

They exist nowhere else in the world and are of great interest to scientists studying the theory of evolution.

Sit tight, as we explore this natural wonder, the dedicated park rangers, the different hikes, and, of course, the awe-inspiring dragons themselves.

To enter this natural wonderland, there’s a modest entrance fee of about 20 euros, which helps fund conservation efforts and the essential work of the park rangers.

Now, let’s talk about these unsung heroes—the park rangers. They are the guardians of this pristine ecosystem, responsible for ensuring the safety of both visitors and wildlife. With their deep knowledge of the park, they make sure every encounter with a Komodo dragon is both thrilling and safe.

Getting to Komodo National Park is easy with most visitors arriving by boat. As you approach, the sheer beauty of the islands takes your breath away. The dramatic hills, lush forests, and pristine beaches create a picture-perfect setting for our exploration.

The hike through the park and viewpoint is available in a short (1h), medium(1.5h) or long walk (2.5h). 

The Komodo Dragons

But let’s talk about the main attraction—the Komodo dragons! These magnificent creatures are the world’s largest living lizards – known for their size, strength, and deadly bite.

Komodo dragons have a natural predator mouth with shark-like teeth and strong venom. Studies say that a Komodo’s venom can kill an adult human within hours.

Apart from that, the Komodo dragon’s bite itself can leave deep wounds that can cause excruciating pain.

They can run up to 20km per hour! They’re also fantastic swimmers and climbers – a victim of the Komodo Dragon doesn’t have anywhere to escape to, honestly.

We were fortunate to spot three of them during our visit!

We kept walking silently, with the park rangers guiding us through the forest, hoping we would see a dragon.  Approximately 15 minutes into our hike, we saw the first one!! Its slithering movements and prehistoric appearance were truly captivating! I couldn’t help but feel a mixture of awe and respect in their presence.

Keeping safe inside Komodo National Park

“Visiting Komodo dragons is an extraordinary experience, but it’s important to remember that these are wild animals. The park rangers ensure everyone’s safety by maintaining a safe distance and adhering to strict guidelines

It is forbidden to walk around alone or go off the designated trails. It is also not permitted to make loud, or sudden noises which could make the Komodo dragon angry or defensive.

When seeing a dragon, you need to avoid eye contact and Keep your distance.

Only five people have been killed by Komodo dragons in the last 50 years, though 24 people have been attacked.

Our journey through Komodo National Park was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. It’s a place where nature reigns supreme! Where park rangers and conservation efforts play a vital role in preserving the unique ecosystem! And of course, where you can come face-to-face with the incredible Komodo dragons.

4. Spot incredible wildlife and marine life

Komodo National Park is renowned for its diverse and unique wildlife, both on land and in the surrounding waters.

Some of the notable wildlife species you can encounter in Komodo include:

• Monkeys
• Bats
• WaterbBuffalos, wild boars, and Timor deer – which the Komodo dragon likes to hunt!
• cockatoos, sunbirds, and the yellow-crested cockatoo, which is native to the area.
• Various species of snakes, including the Russell’s viper, can be found in the park. Several lizard species can be found too, such as the endemic Rinca monitor lizard.
• The waters surrounding Komodo National Park are rich in marine biodiversity. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts can encounter a variety of marine life, including colorful coral reefs, manta rays, sharks, turtles, and numerous species of fish.

Exploring Komodo National Park provides a unique opportunity to witness the interactions between different ecosystems.

Whether on land or underwater, the park offers nature enthusiasts a memorable and immersive experience.

5. Snorkeling Komodo National Park: A Window to the Marine Wonderland

Komodo National Park is renowned for its rich marine biodiversity. Snorkeling is the perfect way to explore the underwater wonderland.

I snorkeled at three spectacular locations: Taka Makasar, Manta Point, and the enchanting Kanawa Island.

Get ready to be amazed by the incredible marine life, vibrant corals, and the kaleidoscope of fish that call these waters home.

Taka Makasar

Our first stop, Taka Makasar, greeted us with its crystal-clear turquoise waters. As we dipped below the surface, we were instantly welcomed by a breathtaking coral garden. The vibrant corals seemed to stretch endlessly, creating a mesmerizing underwater city for countless fish species.

We encountered schools of colorful fish that moved in perfect harmony, creating a living masterpiece of nature. From playful clownfish darting in and out of their anemone homes to regal angelfish gliding gracefully, every corner of this underwater paradise was teeming with life.

Manta Point

Our next adventure took us to Manta Point! Here, we hoped to encounter the ocean’s gentle giants—the majestic manta rays.

We knew from the start that August wasn’t the right season to see them! Nonetheless, as we descended into the deep blue, our hearts raced with excitement!

Unfortunately, These incredible creatures, with wingspans that could rival a small car… were nowhere to be found. As disappointed as we were, this is life – and nature!

I’ll go ahead and include a stock photo of a manta ray – in case you have never seen one!

Kanawa Island

Our final destination was the postcard-perfect Kanawa Island. This was a 10/10 experience! I would have loved to rent a speedboat and spend the day on the island!

Its vibrant coral reefs were like a living tapestry beneath the waves. I couldn’t resist exploring every nook and cranny, uncovering a treasure trove of marine life.

Corals in a myriad of shapes and colors sprawled across the seabed, providing homes for an astonishing array of fish including dozens of gorgeous turtles!

And let’s not forget the water itself! As clear as the clearest of skies, allowing us to witness this aquatic wonderland in all its glory.

Kanawa Island was probably my favorite, I was simply in awe at everything I saw!

Snorkeling in Komodo National Park was an adventure like no other! A journey into a world of wonder and beauty hidden beneath the surface.

These pristine locations revealed the magic of the ocean and reminded us of the importance of preserving these delicate ecosystems.

6. Scuba Diving: Unveiling the Secrets of the Deep Blue Sea

For certified divers, Komodo National Park is a paradise like no other and is reportedly one of the top 5 dive destinations worldwide.

Komodo Flores National Park is home to some of the world’s most exhilarating dive sites. The currents here create a thriving ecosystem, attracting a diverse range of marine life.

Dive enthusiasts get to explore sites like Batu Bolong, Crystal Rock, and Cannibal Rock. There, you’ll encounter everything from tiny seahorses to massive schools of fish and elusive reef sharks. I saw a black-tip reef shark!!

I recently got my OW (Naui Open Water) certification and I was incredibly excited to scuba dive outside of Cyprus for the first time. And oh my goodness – WOW.

I opted to dive with Flores Diving Center, and it was seriously one of the highlights of my entire month in Indonesia.

The Itinerary

We were required to meet the day before for a brief and to inform them of the sizes for all our diving gear.

I was a little nervous – after all this was my first time diving outside of Cyprus. Thankfully, Michael – the owner – quickly made me feel at ease by answering all of my questions

The next day, We met at 6:00 am and boarded the big traditional wooden boat!

By 9 am we did our first dive at Sebayur Kecil at 17 meters deep. There, we saw cuttlefish, garden eels, titan trigger and puffer fish, and scorpion fish!

At 11 am we proceeded to the second dive of the day. This time, it was 15 meters into Makasar Reef where I immediately met with a blacktip reef shark as well as hundreds of vibrant corals and marine life.

Rangko Cave is known for its stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations. The cave is filled with crystal-clear turquoise water, creating a beautiful contrast with the surrounding rock formations. Visitors can swim in the cave’s salty lake and explore its unique features.

10. A taste of culture at Melo Village

Melo traditional village or Melo Village is a village not far from Labuan Bajo. It takes about 40 minutes to get there from the city center. 

At 624 meters above sea level, this panorama of nature looks like a green tapestry. The area temperature reaches 10 to 20 degrees Celsius.

When you arrive in Melo village, you will be served a typical Manggarai dance, called the Caci dance.

The dancers wear hats and carry strippers and shields. The dance show is similar to a war dance, with a fight between the dancers. Lastly, Caci dance has philosophical value, namely as a form of gratitude to God as the Creator of the universe.

This isn’t a tourist hotspot, making it ideal for a break away from the crowds and the heat!

The locals are kind and friendly, so you should feel free to talk to them! Additionally, you can wander the village, take photos, and buy handmade souvenirs.
